Title: Heart Valve Replacement
Post by: Penwoir on May 08, 2016, 04:42:07 pm
Last week my mom had a heart valve replacement operation. She is 78. She has been waiting for a while for the operation and was pleased when the day finally arrived. She was in surgery for 3 or 4 hours and then spent much of the next day or so sleeping. There were a couple of hiccups after the operation, namely her heartbeat had gotten out of rhythm twice so they had to shock her heart back into rhythm. The first time this worked, but the second time it didn't so she is now on beater blockers! Slowly but surely she is recovering and today, she finally walked up and down the corridor of the hospital without the aid of a walking frame. I wonder if anybody else has had this operation. What was your recovery like?

Thank you so much to everybody who responded. My mom is doing well, although she is sleeping quite a bit, and possibly more than the doctors want her to. She is also having a few dizzy spells which is a result of low blood pressure and her heart skipping a beat every now and again. But they are closely monitoring her. It has been suggested that she might benefit from having a pace maker fitted to regulate her heart a bit better, but I don't know if that will happen yet. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

My aunt had multiple heart valve replacements done several years ago.  She was slow getting over the surgery.  She was probably in her mid to late 50's when she had it done.  She is now experiencing some problems now with one of them leaking.  They are trying to treat it with meds before doing surgery again.
