Bit of a random place to ask but why not - any gardeners around here? This is my third year trying to grow a halloween pumpkin in my backyard. It's very hot where I live so I'm having a tough time but I really enjoy it. I'd enjoy hearing any pumpkin advice or experience :) :pumpkin:
-
No- pumpkin is one that I have I never grown. Takes up too much space.
-
in order to grow pumpkins, you need space. they grow everywhere. also you need to water them all the time if your are not in a rainy part of the country. the first year I grew pumpkins, I had about 30.
-
many years ago on my grandparents farm
-
No. I have never grown a pumpkin. Perhaps I would have if I lived on a farm. But the seasonal pumpkins are really cheap & no hassle.
-
Ive never grown a pumpkin, the closest I can come is zucchinis lol
-
yes! by accident really tho --a wild pumpkin started growing next to our house a couple of years ago and those things spread like fire --i gave the pumpkins to a lady i work with and she made lots of pumpkin things and bought them to work to share with all of us ! still to this day dont know how they started but it was neat to watch them grow !
-
No, and as I am still new to this country... I never even carved one ...yet. Would be interesting to do though!!! :glasses-nerdy:
-
I have had the pleasure of doing so but don't recall eating it.
-
A lot of years pumpkins just grow up in our flower beds. I guess usually a bird just drops a seed and they grow.
-
No, but that would be cool to do. I love to go to pumpkin farms in the fall. They have so much land to grow them and I assume that helps them thrive. It's really cool. :pumpkin:
-
No, but I would like to grow one some day when I have my own garden.
-
Nope, I have never grown one. I don't think I've ever grown anything actually. Maybe one day I'll try.
-
I have grown the tiny decorative pumpkins and last year I grew big pumpkins but I only had like 3

Not really but I thought I did. When I was a child (years ago) I wanted to grow a pumpkin. My parents agreed to let me give it a try. I planted seeds behind our garage and the vines took off. Every day I went out there and cared for those vines. I truly believe I would have a pumpkin for Halloween. One day I went back there and there was the most beautiful orange pumpkin i had ever seen. I was so excited and ran for my parents. They came out and smiled and congratulated me. My father picked the pumpkin up and into the house we went. It wasn't until a few years later I learned the truth, my dad had gone out and purchased the best pumpkin he could find and placed it in among the vines. Forever grateful to my dad for making my pumpkin dream come true. :pumpkin:
-
Aw, that was sweet of your dad, it must have been so exciting for you.
Btw, you guys who haven't grown one, I recommend it. They are large plants but you could always train & trim them. And they have some compact bush varieties that don't put out long vines.
-
No but would love to. Just no space to grow one.
-
Nope, but I love eating pumpkins!

I learned that they are a very extreme plant to grow, you must agree. Largest one was 65 lbs. They sold for $50.00 apiece and sold very quickly. Growing a pumpkin is a lot of work, they love food, water at happiest level (pumpkin cannot touch the ground or/and riot happens), sun-loving plant burns in the sun so you have to umbrella the pumpkin, if you choose a blossom for that pumpkin but the blossom on the vine is to close to the ground well the pumpkin stops growing according to the stem/vine's length to the ground because the fruit don't pluck itself. I have tattooed on a young pumpkin while growing on the vine, so I know that works, very cool. My pumpkin seeds I got was the giant pumpkin that grows to 300 lbs. If you want that one is possible, but grow the plant in a higher planter, like a tall garbage can, and make sure the pumpkin is at the end of the stock-vine, remember to put the pumpkin on a platform with wheels because it is large and heavy and will break easy and it is 300 lbs can you lift that up no you won't. Very fun growing them with young kids.

No I haven't

I have never grown a pumpkin that I can remember. As a small kid I was in the garden with my Grandma every day planting all sorts of things and participated in the fair with produce. Won for biggest okra; It was so big it was obscene. I did grow watermelons, well it produced one watermelon, but it overtook the entire garden and spilled over into the back yard, even climbing the back steps. She forbid me to grow anymore vine fruit just as I was going to try my hand at grapes. I figure pumpkins would be similar in that they would take over and require a lot of care. Water and turning was a constant chore to keep the watermelon alive and to keep it from bruising or becoming misshapen, let alone rot. So strawberries became my seasonal go-to for small sections of our garden.

No, but it sounds like fun!...I can't wait to get a house with a large enough backyard so I can grow all the things I love.

-

-
Sorry can't help, I have never drown a pumpkin in my life.
-
no ive tried but i got nothing.........
-
Backyard is too small. Only grow herbs.
-
Yes. Not in the last few years, but I have grown a pumpkin in the past.
-
I have grown pumpkins and did for years. Gave most of them away to the school kids. If you live in a hot arid part of the country, you have to water them a lot like every day and maybe twice a day. I was luck and had a well with a tank on it and water just flowed down from it. I never had to use my pump on them and they got big. But here is a fact you might not know. when you buy pumpkin pie mix in the can it is not pumpkin but blue acorn squash as it is not as stringy.
-
we tried once but never had the green thumb to get them to grow well. pretty much every plant I try to grow dies :(
-
We are growing one right now. It actually just came up in our flower bed. A lot of years that happens. :pumpkin:
-
Can't say that I have! :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin:

We did when I was a kid on the farm. Now when we have a garden we stay away from those because nobody in the family will ever use them, so no reason to grow them.
-
Nope...don't have a garden and even if I did, not sure if I would be interested....hope you enjoy and it goes well though!

I have never tried to grow a pumpkin, but I so want to!!!! I love pumpkins :pumpkin: and have ever since I was a kid. I have great memories going to a pumpkin patch with my family, picking out pumpkins and carving them. I currently make a delicious pumpkin pie from scratch. Every year my family asks me to carve a custom pumpkin, since I have honed in my pumpkin carving skills. My husband is a back to the future fan, so I carved a pumpkin with Doc and Marty and a Delorean time machine last year. If there is anyone who could give any advice on growing pumpkins I would love to read the tips. :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin: :pumpkin:

Funny story that happened to us. One year, I found a vine growing out of the ground, didn't know what it was. So I picked a leaf and brought it in. My dad thought it was poison ivy. Then he said, go ahead and keep watering it and we will see what grows. When it flowered, I picked one off and brought it in. By then we had 3 vines growing, all with a few flowers. My granma said it was a squash flower!! I was like, what the heck are we growing out there?! So I continued to water it, picked off a few flowers. We ended up with 3 giant pumpkins!! Then my dad wondered if that was where we threw some pumpkin seeds one year. It had been 2 or 3 years since we had carved pumpkins so I was surprised they lasted in the ground that long!! They are not hard to grow, you just have to water them every other day or so, ground near the vine should be moist, but not where the actual pumpkin grows! Same with watermelon, and other types of these plants.
-
no, don't know how
-
Only thing I grown are small pot flowers from a kit when I was young. My neighbor used to have a garden that had tomato plums. Never seen people growing pumpkins
-
That is one vegetable I have never grown. They take up a lot of space!
-
No, I never tried that only squash on my patio in a bucket. I don't want to dig up my yard or stoop that low to harvest anything.
-
Yes I have grown pumpkins before. They grow along the ground like zuchinnis and squash and take up a lot of space. If you water them enough, they can grow very large. It's fun to put them out for Halloween and to make pumpkin pies from them.
-
I have never attempted to grow a pumpkin, but I've had a lot of success growing Zucchini's and Tomatoes! I live in Idaho so the summers get very hot. These fleshy fruits require a lot of watering (especially when young) and some good compost. In Idaho we get lots of sunlight which is a necessity, and I think the wind is quite useful for fertilization (unless you have bees or lavender plants which attract the bees, which can do the job for you). Pumpkins don't grow upwards, they grow across the ground like a creeper, so you do need lots of space. Good luck!

The biggest one I did grow was 65 lbs and they called it the great one :present:, It did take a lot of work to grow it, I had the seeds from the pumpkins that grew 300 lbs I took a chance and paid like $5.00 for like three seeds. If you can get them to grow that big wow people pays thousands of dollars for the display. And the champions pumpkins at the shows, their seeds alone are sold for thousands of dollars for 1 seed. They do love the big ones. :pumpkin:
-
No, Never tried it before cause it takes to long and i'm not that good at farming my own stuff.
-
No never but it sounds fun.
-
cant say that I have...don't really eat too much pumpkin...its ok but I had rather have a sweet potato
-
I've not ever grown a pumpkin, but I've seen them in a garden.
-
I grew them when i lived on the farm with the kid's father, I planted then down near the runoff pond where they go lots of water, one time one got so big we had to haul it on the trailer to the fair and unload it with a forklift and then used large d0lly to wheel it into the building. It weighed almost 300 pounds. After fair and the blue ribbon and best of show, we had to haul it back home again. When they are that big they are not really good to eat, So we used a tree saw to cup into pices and fed the pigs. They loved it.
-
No, I never have. The inclination to grow a pumpkin has never occurred to me.
