Title: do you like fruit cake?
Post by: camellia0 on November 21, 2016, 11:50:36 am
So many people give this as a Christmas gift, but I think they are nasty and wouldn't buy it for anyone unless I knew they loved it.

I've only had fruit cake once in my life. I was younger and I don't remember it tasting all that bad. It was over 20 years ago so my recollection may not be all that accurate.

I do think I am the only one in the world that enjoys the partake of the fruit cake in holidays. They are so expensive to homemake them.

I like it but depends on WHO makes it.  My sister in law does one that is delicious, she puts the fruits on the food processor, so they are not big and nasty, and her fruit cake comes wonderful, but some of the other cakes are nasty.

I've never enjoyed store bought fruit cake much, but I think it's because I'm not all that fond of those large dried cherries. They just taste like cherry flavored plastic to me. However, I do make a fruit cake which is really nice, consisting of bananas and avacados which are pulverised in the food processore - they just add flavor and help to keep it moist. Then I add pecans and occasionally finely chopped figs. I sprinkle it with some sugar and decoratively add some pecans on top and it comes out looking fantastic! I like to slice it and freeze it so that I don't feel in a rush to eat it.

I despise fruit cake, but it never fails, every year I get more than one of them.   :(  I don't mean to sound unappreciative because I do appreciate being thought of but... it's "fruitcake".  It just SCREAMS "re-gifted" item , and it feels like all the homeless, unwanted fruitcakes end up spending Christmas with me.  I'm scared to put them out for the birds (don't want to kill them).  I've tried to give them away, NO ONE WANTS them!!!   ::)

Agree!  The Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana, Texas makes the world famous fruitcake that will change your mind about all those "fruitcake jokes" you've ever heard.  It is rich and moist and has been a holiday "tradition" for as long as I can remember.  Well, these "original recipe" fruitcakes date back to 1896 and ship worldwide.

I suppose I can understand why some people just don't like the type of fruit used in the recipe's batter, but chances are those cakes are too dry anyway, quickly turning so hard you could use them as a door stop.  Not the Collin Street Bakery fruitcake.....

Call me crazy, but I actually don't mind the taste of fruit cake! I think it's something you have to get used to, like an acquired taste.

I love fruit cake. I just bought two. One for myself and one to bring to my mom. I surprised her with her favorite cake. She had no idea I was going to bring her a cake.

I don't care for the store bought ones, but some homemade ones i really like, , hubby does not like the store bought either, But now that there is just te two of us, i don't spend a lot of time making the fruit all year that goes into it. Which means candied. It takes a lot of time. So why do it.

You know a lot of people don't like them but the ones I have had are really soft, moist, and pretty good! I don't know where the stereotypes that they are as hard as bricks come from and are really gross but I have had one every year for the past 10 years and they are good to me👍🏼

All I've ever heard about fruit cake throughout my life has been negative! I can't remember every trying it, but if it was vegan, I'd give it a go. Would maybe help me understand why no one cares for it! lol

I actually liked them from what I remember. My grandma used to get them, and I remember tasting them when I would visit her. I haven't tried one since I was little. The ones I see now look artificial and not appealing. I've heard that homemade fruitcake is good, so I'd like to try that.

hmmm that is interesting.... fruit cakes in Italy for instance are the most used in parties or Sunday lunch or any celebration.... but they are also all 100% natural and with real fruit... and they are delicious!
I believe I never tried a US fruit cake yet.... so now I am really curious of why lots of people said it is yukky...

I never liked fruitcake until years ago when I was served a piece my husband's aunt made herself.  Let me tell you I wish I had the recipe cause it was the best I ever had.  She used to make it in September, store it in a can and every day drizzle rum over it until Christmas time when it was served.
