Post by: Nancy5 on November 27, 2016, 12:19:38 pm
Did anyone use this?  I was thinking OMG trying it, but not sure if it's really legit.

I don't have a full account with them but I did the Ancestry DNA test and it did link me with some family members.

I would love to someday. It'd be really interesting to see what I can find out about my family. Give it a shot, who knows what you might discover.

I have been on Ancestry.com for 6 years now.  I have about 25,000 in my tree and still working on it.  Hope everyone has a good day and may God bless each of you and keep you safe.

Yeah, it's legit. I'm working on my family tree too. It makes connecting easier than ever. Don't hesitate, give it a try.

I checked it out, but I didn't find it very useful. You have to put in all your own information, so unless you already know your whole family tree, it doesn't tell you anything. And if you already have that information, what good is it? (Unless I was doing something wrong.)

I personally have not used it, but my uncle has used it extensively and he swears by it. He wanted to know where our Grand Parents came from and what their history was. He sent all our family members a copy of the report and it was truly fascinating. We found out things which were really interesting which, had he not used Ancestry.com, we would never have known. So I would recommend it for sure. I don't know how expensive it is to use though. It must be invaluable if you are adopted or orphaned.

Wow, that is absolutely AWESOME!  I've been doing my family tree but because of how my surname has been mangled over the years, I can't get past my Great Grandfather or Grandmother on my Father's side.  It's so frustrating trying to find any information, and without a paid subscription, Ancestry limits the information they will give you.  Of course, there are other places you might find the info, too, which I have used.  I've actually had better luck finding LOTS of information with my Mother's Biological Parents/Siblings than I am with my own family, LOL.  That's not easy, considering the fact that in 1921 all adoption records in the State she was born in are sealed.

My older  half sister has used it. She had never met her father but because of this site she was able to track down some of her family from his side.

My cousin has used it extensively for information on several branches of our family tree.  She has found some really interesting information.  We found out we were eligible for the Daughers of the American Revolution, but our ancestor  was on the British side.  He had nothing to go back to after the war,so he just stayed here.  (I understand that was fairly common, you joined the military because you were not the first born son)  lor]

I thought about taking a gander at that website. But after seeing the fees, I figured, I am not all that concerned about my ancestral background, LOL.

It helps you find other people or information building on what you already know. For example I knew up to some of my great grandparents. I was able to then find their parents and siblings through census, military and marriage records and keep going back generations. I hit a wall at those born in the early 1800s because records for slaves weren't the most accurate. Other people may have better luck and be able to trace back to other countries and more centuries back

Yes it is legit and if you do the DNA it can lead you to connections that help in your research. You can also learn a lot with a free account at https://familysearch.org/

Ancestry.com doesn't impress me at all.  You are giving them all your personal info.  Not good.  Same  goes for other companies that ask for all your personal info.

They have sales at $69 (when I bought mine) and it does a LOT more.

I have been on Ancestry.com for 6 years.  I have found so many people from all over the world.  On one line on my
fathers side, we came through Joseph and May.  That was a good find.  I have that line all the way back to Adam and Eve.  Hope everyone has a good day and may God bless each of you this Christmas.

Very expensive. When I first started with them back in the '90s, it was around $89 a year. Now it's $189 a year and that only gives you the U.S. It's another $199 if you want to go over the pond. I'm at that point where all my families are in England, Ireland, Wales, and Germany/France (Alsace region) but I just can't afford it. It's getting harder and harder to even have the U.S. one...but they have some really great resources and microfilmed records for the U.S., so I stay.

You don't need to know you're whole family. You just start with what you DO know. They have "hints"  that connect you to information that may be valuable and takes you further back in your ancestry. You also take a person and SEARCH for info on that person and up pops a list of census, military info, newspaper info, naturalization, birth, baptism, death and burial info, even public records like where your ancestor  lived and other members who are doing the same family. Some even have public school photos and photos of their ancestors that they freely allow others to use.

I used to go to different states and counties to find info on my family until I joined Ancestry. Now I go there first and then to other places if I can't find anything new.

Seriously???? They charged me $189 this past June. Do you have full USA database access? It doesn't seem right that I'm paying double of everyone else. I'll be looking into why the difference. I don't think it's a good way to keep their most loyal customers, is it?

I'm sure they meant it's $99 for the Ancestry DNA test not for membership
