Title: I received an Amazon Fire TV
Post by: o2bnocn on January 02, 2017, 07:51:06 am
I got an Amazon Fire TV for Christmas. I love it. There are a lot of television apps that you can get on it. you can also get certain movie channels. Anyone else have one?

I got a free week trial of Showtime. I liked it more than I thought. I just signed up for Netflix.

This has really upgraded how I watch television and movies.

Before I get too excited and spend too much on entertainment, I am going back to work.  ;D Just a little joke but seriously I cannot spend but too much on entertainment.

I've been considering getting one.   We want to cut our cable.  Just tired of the expense and the problems we have with reception.  I can't even count how many times we've  had tech folks here.   We also thought about getting Netflix.   My only concern is there are channels I love, Bravo, History, Discovery and don't want to give them up.   But we are looking into options to replace cable and cut the expense.

No I do not have but with the cost of cable, we are beginning to look at what other options exist, the cost of cable is out of control and we do not even have premium channels like HBO, Showtime etc.. thaanks for sharing the info will look into.

It sounds as if you would want to watch TV every single day with that set.

I know exactly how you feel. I wanted one so bad I bought it for myself for Christmas. Mine is a Samsung 40" Smart TV in 4K resolution and it blew me away the first time I played a Ultra High Definition movie from Hulu on it. I also use mine as the monitor for my computer and can watch a movie, surf the net, work on a website and read email all open at the same time in full size, AWESOME!

WOW!  Is the Amazon Fire TV pricey?  That sounds like an awesome way to have it all so to speak and spend a ton less.  I cut the cord 10 years ago.  Went from 1/2 a million dollar home debt lifestyle to single Mom with 3 kids and no job in my Mom's basement.  We hardly have time to watch T.V. But there are those times where we go... sure do miss... For me it's the travel and cooking networks.  Enjoy your new toy!

My daughter bought us one last year for Christmas.  It is nice to have.  We are thinking about canceling our cable and keep the cable and just going with online TV.

I use to have a NEOTV, and the fire tv is an upgrade in my honest opinion.

So far I can tell everyone that:
some channels have apps such as TBS, FX, USA, TNT, ABC, NBC. To receive these channels you would need to sign in with your provider. It could still cut the cost if you were wanting to downgrade a little. Perhaps you have a lot of TV's in your house, then you could use the apps instead of paying the cable box to have on demand and such. I wanted on demand in my room for a long time but the cable provider makes us pay so much for that type of box and I only had basic cable (nothing else) with no on demand, and the guide sucks on it as well.
However certain channels make you pay such as CBS for the app per month.
Also, Amazon Prime members can get more such as Starz. I don't think I can get Starz unless I'm a Amazon Prime member.

I think I can get HBO but I'm not sure.

It's definitely and upgrade and some of the apps even let me watch live tv on a different coast. I'm East Coast and have been watching West Coast.

Basic cable sucks some days so I can understand why people get frustrated with it.

I checked the stations I get with my cable company and realized that I've been paying for the Digital Preferred Triple Play which is the most channels received unless you had the premiums like HBO, etc. Since I checked how many channels we watch (only 25) and wrote them down, I was looking into other ways to get rid of my cable since they upped their rates to over $200 starting this month. Anyway, found that I can use the Digital Starter group, which gives all the stations we watch and cuts the bill back down to what I was paying before (which is still a struggle to pay).

BTW, if you look at your bill, you'll notice all kinds of extras. Mine, rounded off, has "Other Charges and Credits) which is $17 on mine and then there's the taxes, surcharges and fees which is another $9. Also under the Preferred Triple Play is  a State Taxable Amount for Equipment that's almost another $3. So that's an extra $30 a month. That's ridiculous!

Something tells me that a couple items on this bill may be double charged, so I"m calling them again to find out what all these other charges are. Plus our state  wants to raise the sales tax to 7%.

My son gave me some kind of internet TV box for Christmas and set it up. it gets You Tube, Netflix, Facebook, movies, and so many other thingies. He set it up and showed me how to use it and I will play with it until I feel comfortable then plan to tell the cable company to shove it except for internet which is only $55.  I don't know if hubby would be able to use it. He just learned how to change channels with the remote that we use now AND has no idea how to set the "remind" option so if I think he can't do it, I'll have to stick with cable.

I've also looked into buying my own modem and router (for phone and internet), which would save me at least $180 a year or more with the cable company.

We are thinking of getting a Amazon fire stick and just getting rid of cable for good. I have heard good things about it. We spend $200 a month just for DirecTV and U verse internet.

Wow what a nice gift.  I don't have one but I have an internet ready tv and have netflix which I absolutely love - had netflix for years and they are so reasonably priced.  Was only 8.62 for years and just went up to 10.78 which didn't bother me a bit.  I never have trouble finding something to watch.  Well enjoy your awesome television.

There are so many options these days.  Who knows how we'll be watching TV in the future.  I am not familiar with the Amazon Fire TV, but I'll bet it's awesome.  I'll have to look it up!  I pay for Netflix out of my FC money every month, and we have thoroughly enjoyed having it at our house.  A smart TV is on my want list.

Another option is to add a box or stick (like Roku) to the TV you have now to make it smart.

I'm looking to cut cost also.  I have one smart tv but I may look into putting a fire stick on the others and ditch the cable.
