Title: the smell of laundry...
Post by: cloudsoup on September 22, 2009, 07:06:30 pm
i've been on the hunt for a specific scent of laundry
detergent or fabric softener, but i've yet to be successful.
the best way i can describe it, is orange smoothie.
its rather strong and stays on your clothes for quite awhile.
an aunt of mine used to use it and i just LOVED the smell
of her towels, but she can't remember what it was, or if it was
the actual detergent or fabric softener sheets.

i usually just buy the cheapest stuff i can find, but i'm
wondering if anyone might know of a great orange/citrus
kind.

what do YOU use?

I haven't smelled anything with an orange scent in laundry detergent. I do like fresh scented clothes with the clean smell when they just come out of the dryer though.

:) Some detergent companies make scented laundry soaps...find your favorite fragrance and proceed from there.

It may have been Tide Citrus and Light with Febreze freshness.  They also had this same scent available in Downy.  I do not think that they make this kind anymore.  They have two other Tide with Febreze frreshness products.  I never got to try this myself, but I really like the Tide spring and renewal febreze scent.

They still make the Febreze air effects citrus and Light Scent in the form of room spray.  (I think)  At least you can still experience the scent, if this is the scent that you were enjoying.

that sounds nice, I hope you find it.  If you do, will you post it here so some of us can give it a try?

I know snuggie or febreeze have that kind of fabric softener.
I love the smell of laundry! My mom use to use this fabric softener that she got when she was working in Saudi and it gives you a sense of comfort.

Ooooh!  That sounds cool.  I usually love orange smelling cleaning stuff.  I am currently using Sun vanilla lavender.  It smells pretty good too.

My Favorite is febreeze spray with tide by far i think it is the best smell in the world for clothes even better if you can air dry in the hot sun. I have never heard of an orange smelling laundry detergent but i hope you find it but those gain scents sounded pretty good

One of the reasons that your clothes lose a fair amount of scent is due to putting the clothes in the dryer.  Sometimes I hang some clothes outside.  For some clothes, I  just dry in the dryer for about 10 minutes to get the wrinkles out and to reduce some of the wetness.  I then just hang them up to allow them to finish drying by "air dry".  If you let the clothes air dry, the scent will be stronger on your clothes.

I love to use scented laundry soap/ fabric softener.  However my husband son both break out horribly when I sue either one.  So I get to use boring free and clear soap, and cannot use fabric softener at all not even free and clear or dryer sheets.  I have tried and it resulted in rashes and alot whining (from my husband).

I'm moving off a bit, as I use plain ol' castile soap, white vinegar, and lemon juice for my laundry...but what I do like are the Arm and Hammer Naturals dryer sheets (believe it's the lavender one I'm trying now) for packing clothes and blankets.  also, throw one into each shoe to keep the stink at bay!!  trust me, it works, and it's nice not to be grossed out by your own sneakers

Nothing smells as good as the fresh scent of sun dried laundry.

I've been doing laundry for a long long time, like 40 years (haven't we all?)  Just recently moved from Colorado (humidity less than 5% on a wet day) to Ohio (humidity 70% plus most of the time) and suffered greatly till I fiqured out that only completely dry laundry should be allowed in the dresser. In Colorado things dried out instantly.  There is just no smell grosser than mildew. Phewwie!

Tide Pure Essentials with Citrus Extracts smells really good. It's a little expensive. They have it on sale sometimes at Target, or coupons in the paper. I like more of a Fresh scent and the sweet baby powder scent of Snuggle or Downey for my Fabric Softener. My Mom always used Downey and it's just one of those scents that takes me back home.

wow, i've never even though about homemade detergents!
that's pretty neat. it's probably cheaper than store-bought, right?

thanks for all the answers so far. i'm trying to use up the last
of my fiance's plain old tide so i can try out something new.
every time i'm at the store, i take a stroll through the detergent
aisle, smelling them as i go. i should make a poll!  :P

I have also used vinegar (put it in in the rinse cycle) especially with whtes if you have hard water.  Really gets the detergent out and helps whiten the clothes.

Here is a question - does any one know where you can buy White King D laundry soda?  My mom used it all the time and it works great for cleaning windows.

If you're looking for that fresh laundry smell, you should always use the fabric softener sheets...Whenever I use the fresh-smelling detergent, the smell never stays past about half an hour after I take the laundry out of the dryer. But if you use fabric softener sheets, you'll get that fresh smell for days. =]

I would love that smell on my towels, but on my clothes?  I'm not sure about that.  I also buy the cheapest detergent I can find.
