Title: For the love of yard sales
Post by: singletonb on December 28, 2017, 08:22:25 pm
There are folks that love to go to yard sales just to see what they can find and there are those that can make a living from buying low and reselling a little higher for a nice profit.  Are there any of you skilled in yard sale shopping and reselling for profit. share your experience please.

I have this fantasy that I am going to find one of the few remaining Edgar Allen Poe daguerreotypes.

But nothing like that ever happens, at least, not to me.

Not really a garage sale person though I do like checking out local consignment and thrift stores.

I like yards sells, not much of a haggler myself.

I'm a fool for a good yard/garage sale or flea market! I love to pick through stuff and try to find treasure. Of course, the yard/garage sale has to be in pretty good order. I'll drive right by one if it looks all haphazard. I don't resell the stuff I buy, though. It usually ends up used somewhere in my house or, worst case scenario, stuffed in a closet that's already full of stuff! :-[

I like going to Goodwill stores in richer areas because people donate nicer things.
I found a real leather (Prada) purse that looked brand new! I only paid $5.99 for it. I could have turned around and sold it but I liked the purse so much I kept it for myself.  I'm not sure I would want to go through the hassle of going to garage sales and selling stuff online though.

I know a woman who actually has plenty of money but she and her husband go to yard sales and she gets stuff to resale on ebay.

You never know what you may find at an Estate Sale.  Old people that kept stuff forever and the family just sells it all cheap to get rid of it because they don't want it and don't want to move it.

I use to stop at yard sales but don't any more. I don't like thrift stores either. I have noticed lately, they get all the stuff the sale for FREE, and they charge Walmart prices for used clothes. Our local Goodwill has had tennis shoes out there that were so disgusting and gross I could not believe they would put them on a shelf and ask money for them. I also cannot believe somebody would donate something that horrible.

My sister and I have a group sell site on Facebook so yard sales are a huge part of life!! However, we are in a small town so they only occur in the summer for the most part. We do buy for ourselves too, but mostly to fix, clean, etc. and resell. I tend to look for things that I wouldn't mind having myself so if it doesn't sell, I have no problem with keeping it. We also sell things for other people too (for 20%) and do quite well at it. My sis is now semi retired so she has more time to work on it. We both love it!! But it is a lot of work, more so than you would think!!

We go to yard sales in the summer, and since we live in a small town we know a lot of the other people who are either having the yard sale or are yard sailing, we do more visiting then buying, But I will say it is a great way to buy a lot of baby and young children's clothing.  I volunteer  at a charity here in town and  you would not believe what is  donated to us every month.  Most of it is what the yard sellers  can't sell. We hang it up and give it away along with a monthly allotment of groceries, Don't charge a thing for them. The first 2 weeks of the month are very busy. We will  have between  60 and 80 people in  2 days. We are only open for four hours Tue. and Thu. and  run our tails off. But it is worth it.

Well.. it's fun and this is something which (according to me) is typical American as you do not do it in Europe (or at least not in Italy where I come from)... therefore... I think it is a very smart idea... not only you can easily get rid of unwanted stuff and even make some money out of it (instead of simply trashing)... but also, for people who come and check out... you never know, you might find a little "treasure"....  :glasses-nerdy:

I do love going to yard sales and flea markets.  You always find the oddest things which are so hard to find in a regular store.

Not much of a fan, it's rare to see a yard sale with anything worth buying. If you really made a point of going to nicer estate sales, maybe.

Some people sell their stuff so cheap & the item is in mint condition! Now, that's a bargain!

Yard sales can hold gold in a way. If you take your phone know how to price stuff you see and if you buy the item you could possibly turn it for a proffic. You would not believe what types of vintage stuff how much they can go for these days

I've only been to a garage sale or two, but they can have some unexpected treasures. My sister works at a thrift store and we've all found some wonderful gems there, things that should be much more expensive and are in great condition! Their standards are high over there, anyway--no pilling, no tears, not the tiniest stain allowed. I've been able to get some items there to resell on my shop on Depop (a popular app on your smartphone for buying and selling).  :)

Most yard sales around me are just old clothings which I'm not interested in.  I'd love to find some vintage cast iron pans though, I've heard that the vintage ones has smooth surface that works better than the rough surface new ones are now.

Yard sales are great. You can really find some bargains in them, but you have to get there fast before they're picked clean of the good stuff. There's a certain type of fun though in stumbling upon a treasure at them.

At an estate sale I found a ring that I put a different stone in and I where it everyday.  It is my "Mother's Ring".  It has 4 diamonds (1 for each child) on the side of the center stone.  I replaced the gem it had with an emerald cut PERIDOT gem.

It is stunning.  August is our wedding month, so Peridot gem.  4 children, 4 diamonds
August stand

I used to shop yard sales and sell on ebay. That was years ago when ebay was just becoming popular. It was easier to sell on there at that time.

I am not one for yard sales.  I am not into buying someelse's  junk when I have a lot of junk of my own.  Plus for the most part people are filthy and that is not for me.

Last Flea Market I went to was Englishtown NJ which was 1 and a half years ago, great way to kill a day as a buyer and great deals but as a seller it's a task(have to pack the truck up full the day before which takes hours then leave at 4:30 am to be there at 6:00 am and you  until 3:00 pm to sell then you have to pack up and be gone by 5:00 pm) Some days you can do great and others it's a loss(tolls 2 ways, gas, food, time, table fee(s)   I decided to just give stuff away to the Salvation Army, libraries, friends instead of that hassle and do this(you can lie in bed and relax,no temptation to spend your earnings  either).

I wish I took more time with yard sales.

I often don't think about them until I am passing them, and in a hurry to get someplace else.

I have to make some time for those. Great opportunities often.

Thanks for the reminder.

My sis and I are so anxious for Spring to get here so we can do more yard sale-ing!! She is semi-retired now and only works 1 or 2 days a week and I'm going down to 2 or 3 days a week soon. We have an online business that keeps us busy and we resale a lot of what bargains we find at yard sales. We keep track of what we spend and what we make on the re-sale! It's a lot of work but also so very fun!!
