I know someone who has arthritis and he does not take care of himself (exercising and eating right). He has really bad joint pains and he usually goes to a doctor to get some kind of a shot for the pain. But when he goes to this doctor, he will tell lies, such as he is taking care of himself (eating right and exercising).
I can assume that the doctor knows that he is not telling the truth, but if the doctor is aware, I am curious as to why this doctor continues to give my friend these shots.

She cute......that's the first thing I can think of (with acceptance), that'd get me lying to my doctor........unless I really don't know where the pain is....that has happened.
The "Just tell me what to do or heal me already" situations that warrant a doctor visit.

Nothing but stupidity if you lie

Sometimes people are too proud and feel too foolish if they tell the truth. They may think they take better care of themselves than they do. It's a shame your friend doesn't care enough about themselve to take better care.

Well, a doctor is always going to try to mitigate a disease if he/she can. Lying about taking care of himself only hurts your friend. Both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis can be quite painful. The fact is that no matter how difficult it may seem and you hurt, it is important to keep moving. People tend to stiffen all the more if they don't move. It really is the case of "Use it, or lose it!"

The doctor cannot tell a patient that they are lying. Or even that they think they are lying. He gives him the shots because that is what doctors do.

Taking care of yourself is also in the eye of the beholder. What one person feels is taking care of themselves someone else may think is not. I may think you need to walk 5 miles a day to take care of yourself. You may think the movement you get thru out a general day is enough. So you say you are taking care of yourself and I say you aren't because you don't walk 5 miles a day.

Your friend is hurting himself by lying.
-
A doctor can’t help you unless they know the truth. Your friend might not be telling the truth because he’s embarrassed to tell the doctor the truth. The doctor is probably giving him the shot because it probably does help him.

I have arthritis in both knees, but I tell my doctor that I don't exercise because it is so painful that it is all I can do to walk. I go back to her in two weeks and am going to talk about knee surgery because it has got to where I cry because it is so painful to walk.

It's bad, but the doctors aren't going to be able to do anything about it. They have to help people, hence why they keep giving your friend a shot. The other thing is arthritis is one of those things is you have to get through the pain in order to move enough for it not to bug you any more. Some people have a hard time doing that first step.

I think many of us do that. I don't really tell everything to my doctor.
-
Lying never helps in any situation. What's the benefit from telling lies especially to the doctor who is suppose to help you.

"Is my nurse making you hard ? " "No" "LIAR !!!!!!"
-
I have a friend who does the same and its really dumb how he thinks it would just go away if he sleeps it off.
-
Maybe he likes the drugs that he is getting for his pain. So many people are on pharmaceutical drugs for other reasons that what they are suppose to be using them for. ???
-
The doctor is hopefully doing what is right for the patient, and may or may not know if he's lying, so he/she will continue to give him the shots unless your friend reports a problem.
-
He's putting his own health on the line.
-
It;s hard for the doctor to treat you correctly; if someone is not supplying all the information as best they can; doctor may prescribe something that they really do not need and then causes them other problems; I know it 's sometimes hard to describe what's going on; but I always try to tell doctor what's I', experiencing.

Sometimes it's not so much lying just not comfortable of telling the whole truth
-
i hate when my hubby fibbs to dr >:( >:(
-
Really? The doctor most likely doesn't care. The doctor makes more money by giving him the shots than if he didn't.
-
Lying to the Doctors simply does not work!
-
When you lie to doctors and nurses they just run every test and put you through it all. if you're lucky it's just enemas and not catheters .

Eating right and exercising doesn't necessarily completely remove chronic pain from arthritis or other chronic pain causing conditions. I say let your friend live their life and cope with chronic pain however they see fit. And be happy if they can get some relief.
