A self-driving car operated by Uber struck and killed a pedestrian who was walking her bicycle in Tempe, Ariz., Sunday night. The incident could be the first pedestrian death involving a self-driving vehicle. What is your stand on self driving cars ? I think it's all insanity. People are just getting to darn lazy is how I see it.
-
they need an awful lot more testing
-
Here in las vegas they had the first self driving trolly and in the first hour of operation there was collision with a truck. They are trying it again.
-
This is a little scary, self driving vehicle.
-
I've been hearing news about self driving cars for the future, but I didn't realize that they were already on the roads. How sad that someone was killed. There's no telling what our future roads will look like. I know you can't stop progress, but sometimes these new innovations just seem unnecessary!
-
Self-driving cars are nuts.
They cannot think/process so many of the things going on with humans around them.
It is a dangerous idea. Their wanting a cool new toy driving will cost people their lives or cause much harm...when they malfunction (and they will), or like that poor lady coming out of the dark.
If they the man in back had been driving, he could have run off the side of road to perhaps avoid hitting her.

I like technology. I think we are still WAY far off before this becomes the norm and accidents like this are the reason why.
-
I like driving too much...self driving car? ???
No thanks... ::)
-
Do not like the idea at all. To me this is for lazy people and if you are that busy texting and working on your computer take public transportation
-
I don't like the idea. People are becoming too dependent on machines.
-
In my opinion, if there is one thing worse than some of the drivers that are on the road these days, it's a driverless vehicle.
The idea was never a good one if you ask me. All I see with this whole thing is one miserable problem after another. :bad:
-
I think uber wants then so they dont have to pay people. I think the driver less car will happen but will take a few years. Think people would like them if there safe.
-
I don't trust self driving cars it's far as I could throw one! To me it's just a scary as having a drunk driver on the road. There obviously needs to be a lot more testing but I don't see the need for self driving cars at all. :rainbow: :peace:

I know it is terrible! Self-driving or not.
I wish someone would invent a motor vehicle
that kills no one.
-
I like technology as much as the next person, but self driving cars, no way. I think we are years away from that concept. Next they will have self flying planes.
-
I say no thanks, scares the heck out of me, humans are way too unpredictable and I don't understand how they think a machine will predict what we will do and who knows what the heck a self-driving vehicle will do. We live where we drive miles and miles to get some where and have idiots on the road all of the time. So I would think they need to do a lot more work on them before ever testing one. I would never get in one even if they do have a backup driver in one. When someone else is driving the car we all are not looking at the road but off in the distance. Just as a backup would be. So I say again No thanks.
-
I still like to be in control of my own car too many things can go wrong with computer controlled car
-
Self driving cars would scare me. The car shouldn't have that much control over the road. I wouldn't think that they would put this kind of car on the road this fast, even if they tested more and more of them. Some of them would still have defaults! :-\ :clover: :clover: :clover: :clover: :clover: :clover: :clover: :clover:

I'm okay with a car that stops when it senses something that the driver may not know about. I'm also okay with a car that slightly adjusts your steering if you are leaving your lane unintended. But yeah, I don't like the idea of a car that just drives on it's own. There was a test (sorta) that basically posed the question of who should die in these different situations, and that's the thing that we tend to forget about when driving is that we are essentially controlling a device that can kill if not handled properly.
A self driving car would probably say the safer course of action is to hit the dog/cat in the road instead of swerving to avoid it, but most pet lovers would attempt to avoid the animal instead of just running it over.
-
I would personally not want one. I think its craziness - its bad enough watching out for stupid careless drivers much less watching out for people doing lord knows what and letting their cars do the driving for them. Just my personal opinion
-
I don't care for self driving vehicles. I enjoy driving my own vehicle. Concerning the accident tho, I understand that she didn't use the crosswalk and she just walked out in front of the car. I don't think if there was a driver he would have been able to stop.
-
I don't trust self driving cars and prefer not to chance it. :bad:

The Uber car was not completely self driven. There was a human in the passenger seat that could have over ridden the system at any time but wasn't paying attention. Wherever there is the human element there will be room for error. Even if there hadn't have been a human monitoring the self driven car, you still have a pedestrian that was struck. A percentage of every accident is attributed to each party when only non-automated accidents occur-so I am would think that the victim had a part to play in this as well. I am against self driven cars and so-called safety devices. I have made it to the grand old age of fifty plus without wearing seat belts or helmets and really do not see the use on them (actually see them as a hindrance). My wife's brand new car is filled with all kinds of safety devices. One in particular slows the car if you get too close to the car in front of you. In busy traffic this can be dangerous when you try to cut into traffic.

I also heard about this, so sad! I would never get in a self driving car!!! Who really needs a self driving car anyway?
-
I heard about this incident, it's so sad. I feel it's too soon for a self driving vehicle. More research, testing and safe guards need to be put in place before this type of vehicle is put on the road. :( :( :( :(
-
Yes I agree. This is strange to me although I sometimes think I would like my car to pick me up! I wonder how that works with your insurance or even the law, do you pay more for having the car drive and who gets the ticket!
-
This is just the beginning! We are in a society that keeps growing and wants everything to be automated...
they are testing these vehicles... and they actually want people to die... that's how they test it.... eventually they will get it right (they already have it all set up)... and they have WAY more then what we see, trust me.
-
we are a long way from me trusting this
-
It will probably be commonplace in a few years but right now it seems crazy to me. If they were on some kind of independent track maybe, but just having them totally free on the street among regular cars seems way too dangerous.
-
Honestly, I think Americans are the only ones who would need this because we do things other than just drive in the car. Most highways in Europe don't have speed limits because Europeans get into a car to just drive it. Just look at the Autobahn. There is no speed limit which means you can drive as fast as you want and the fatalities/accidents on it are from non-German residence i.e. Americans. If we followed European standards and just drove our cars, we wouldn't need self-driven cars. Now that Americans do everything from eating and putting on makeup to playing with their cellphones, they really aren't driving the car anyway. But personally, I don't trust self-driving cars. I do like back-up cameras, parallel park assists, lane assists, sudden brake assists, but to actually drive, no. Things like the fatal accident are never far from my mind because electronics can just die and if software updates to the car (which clearly need to happen) don't include new traffic signs, speed limits etc. accidents will only continue to increase.
-
I don't like the idea. There is too much of a chance for error. Computers go off line, glitches occur, hacking and other issues will arise. I would feel better if myself or an actual person is behind the wheel of a vehicle I'm riding in.
-
Yes ,let's make it easier for terrorists to use vehicles to kill ppl.
-
I think self driving cars are crazy. I would never ride in one and I wouldn't trust one.
-
I agree w/u sbenkoski. Now big rigs are out there. I truck went 60 miles and had a fender bender in Nevada...
-
Why would anyone ride in a self driving vehicle? That is really the stupidest idea ever. There is no way I am riding in a self propelled car since it has no idea how to recognize a human walking and about 10k other things.
-
I never trust those self driving vehicles, maybe someday it'll drive into your living room
-
That's scary, They are fairly new, so bound to have clichés.

SCARY …
-
I would still put my trust in a self driving car over many of those drunk, road rage, and sleepy drivers.
-
Don't think it's a good idea to keep using those cars, it's proven to not be safe.
-
I would never own a self driving car. I'm too scared of them. I do not think that they are safe. :bad:
-
That is a shame.
But I for one cant wait until I can just hop in my car, type in my destination sit back and relax until I get there!
:)
-
Self driving can be great. But I saw video the human behind the wheel was busy on his phone .
-
I'm on the fence in regard to self driving cars - I think the self driving feature for parallel parking is neat - and something I would actually use. The rest of it is just to unpredictable (now - - - developing technology may change that?) I mean why not just use mono-rails all over?
-
I cannot and will not trust a car to drive me anywhere. People have already been killed, one lady hit a person on their bike.
If they can prove and do more research on the developments and proof, maybe.
-
I recall the accident in question, and I saw some of the Uber footage. Very sad situation, but I'm not entirely sure a person behind the wheel could have stopped in time either. I like the idea of self-driving cars, but do agree they could use a lot more testing. And I doubt people will ever want to give up driving completely. However, think of the freedom and independence they could offer to the elderly who can't drive anymore, and how many potential accidents could be avoided. Also, instead of road rage behind the wheel, people on long commutes could maybe relax a little more, take some time for themselves.
-
i think it is a bad idea cause it is a sign that robots are taking over
-
There needs to be more testing and it should be done in wide open places where noone can get hurt like an old ghost town. They should take ideas from the movies and create areas to test with obstacles, or someone throwing an item in front of it and see if it stops, etc. I don't really like driving so if it was safer, I might give it a try because they will eventually get it right just like the self parking cars.
-
That’s a nasty idea. Vehicles weren’t meant to control themselves!
-
I'd never be able to trust a self driving vehicle; seems like an accident waiting to happen as far as I'm concerned. I really enjoy driving so that's another reason I'd not turn it over to a car to drive!
-
Due to the accident, sdv still needs more testing.
-
They would have a time driving the winding, crooked roads in northeastern KY!
-
What next????? Too much technology!
-
It's true that they're not perfect and need much more testing, but I definitely think they can have a very positive impact. When comparing the accidents in self driving cars and their tests to normal cars in daily traffic, it seems to me like they have much more potential for safer roads. If they become mainstream, I think there will be less accidents and less traffic. Plus, you could be lazier when driving, and everyone knows Americans are lazy.

What next????? Too much technology!
I know. We can't live with or without technology!
