Title: Do you use multiple credit cards?
Post by: pectacon on November 20, 2018, 01:18:40 pm
I have been looking to switch banks/cards lately and it seems like most people I ask have two or three different credit cards. I've only ever had 1, I get that they offer different rewards depending what you're buying but it seems like a headache to keep track. How many do you use?

I have 2.  One I use for emergencies only and one I use if I get something online.  Otherwise I just use my debit card.  8) 8) 8)

I would say two (2) if an Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card counts.

I only have one active debit card.

I have 3. 2 major and a store card. I only really use one of the major ones because the rewards and incentives are amazing. Plus, bonus cashback opportunities rotate every quarter through 4 different categories and it's paid off significantly. And no annual fee! In the past year, I've gotten over a grand cashback.
Cha-ching! $$$

I do have more than one but I do not use them all constantly charging on them all.  It is not hard to keep track of.  I know what I owe and most have no charges at all.  They have apps you can get for each one. You can also get something like Credit Karma (free) and monitor it there as well.

I have three. The first is a low limit high APR card I got to rebuild my credit after some financial struggles. I only charge Netflix on it and pay it off every month to keep it active. The second is a 1.5% cashback card that I use most of the time. I bought some furniture and mattresses near the end of the 0% intro period. So I just got my third card, because it has a long 0% balance transfer period, so I transferred the balance from my second card to this one. Got to be strategic about it.  ;)

I used to have two that I rarely used. But one CC company increased the interest rate so I cancelled it. I kept the one with a lower rate.  I try to not use my CC but this year I do have a balance to work on decreasing. At least this time I can use the "rewards" to help pay it down.

We mainly use or debit card or cash but if it is a big purchase or we can save money at a certain store by using our credit cards then we will. Just not very often.

I have 2 major credit cards, one MasterCard and one Visa and they both give me cash back as a reward bonus.  I also have 2 store credit cards that I use but I always make sure to pay off the balance on any card that I might use.

I have a debit card, 2 major credit cards, and Navicore for consolidated credit:  I had about 7 credit cards and had them all consolidated.  Wished I never had so many cc because the interest is what kills you.

I don't have any CC. My Mom taught me that if you don't have the money for it then don't buy it.

I have one that I use for certain types of purchases I can't use cash for  that would put too much of a hold on my bank account if I used a debit card... like car rentals. It's always paid off immediately, so no interest or debt mounts!

I have 2 major credit cards. 1 i am trying to pay off so that I can lock it away and just use the other one. I want to build my credit score and when most of us use credit cards, we buy things we do not need.

Friendly PSA because it seems many people don't know this...

Don't cancel your credit card unless it has an annual fee. If you want to avoid temptation, just cut up the card. Closing the account hurts your credit rating.

Yes. I have two credit cards that offer zero percent interest on balance transfers once a year. My wife usually has balances so we transfer those over to my two accounts and pay them off in one year. I have one card that pays three percent back on purchases which I use, and pay off, every month. I have one card that is hooked to an online account that the family uses to make purchases. I have two other credit cards that I use every month for gas purchases so that I maintain a higher credit score. I also have one credit card, with a smaller limit, that I use for gambling and off shore purchases. Typically these get closed off by the credit card company but the one I use has been in force for seven years and appears to fly under the wire when making purchases that other cards would turn down.

I use several actually a couple more than the others though.  One I use for gasoline because it saves me 5 cents per gallon and also has other rewards and one other rewards card.  I still use the others here and there because I don't want them to get cancelled or whatever happens if you never use them which I don't know about.

Really! Interesting tip I didn't know that, thanks. So what happens when the card expires? Do you keep renewing it forever only to destroy the cards?

I have 2 one has no charges on it and the other one  is use  for small things when I can't  write a check. I don't like to use my debit when I am not sure of the company. With the  credit card I can fight them.  also I would not like someone to use my  debit card should they see me  use  it with my   code.  I use them  so  rarely  but it is good to help keep your credit score in good  standing.

My main credit card is Discover (because they pay me the most), but since they are not accepted everywhere I have a Barclays Visa card too. I pay them both off every month, so there is no interest. The Barclays card pays me points I use for travel. This year I got a week long stay in a Hampton Inn and last year we used it for a flight to London and back.

Hello! :D :)

I currently have two credit cards and that is how I plan to stay as I don't want to complicate things. With two cards it's easier to manage and pay off both. The key is to use it in a way that can benefit you and not hurt you in the long run. :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:  :rose:

Discover is good you get double cash back after your first year. Seems to be easy to get. Like 2 have a couple with little or nothing on them. We put expensive things on credit easier till you see the bill. Had a large plumbing bill put it on a credit  hey we got points.

I use my Discover card the most due to the super security I have with that card and my cashback bonuses I get.  I'm saving the cashback for Hawaii!  The only other one I use is my Kroger Mastercard.

Well technically, you should put a small purchase on it every now and then to keep it active. The credit card company will eventually review your account and will close it if there has been no activity for a long time. But I've had open accounts for many years without an actual card before they closed them. The longer your accounts are open, the better.

Also if you have other debt, closing an account will increase your utilization. Credit bureaus like to see less than 30% utilization. So if you have 2 credit cards with $1000 limits on each and you make a $500 purchase on one of them, your utilization is 25%. Then if you close one of the accounts, your total credit available drops to $1000 and your utilization jumps up to 50%. So your credit rating will drop until you pay down that $500. And that is not necessarily a big deal, unless your credit is already not too good or you plan to apply for a big loan in the near future, like a car loan or mortgage.

I have two. One that I use in emergency and for big ticket items.  The other one was opened to get the 21 months of 0% interest on a the balance transfer.  I also transferred the balance and now only have one payment to worry about each month and no interest charged.  Great way to pay down debt

I only use one credit card. I used to have two, the second being a cash rewards credit card. But having to pay two credit card balances at once turned me off to having more than one credit card. So, in 2016, I paid off and closed the cash rewards card and maintained the one that I have today (which has no balance on it, thank God).
