Title: I can never catch a break
Post by: 1imaginarygirl on December 26, 2018, 08:42:28 am
ARRGH! We finally saved enough money to go on vacation for our 10 year anniversary. Then my vehicle broke down. Radiator hose popped off, put a new screw clamp on because the old one was bent, and now it's overheating. It was on Sunday, had to get a tow back home since nothing was going to be open until today. Just had it towed to the dealership for service. Hoping and praying it's just the thermostat and didn't blow the head gasket.

Every time I save some money.... WHOOOSH. There it goes...

 :sad1: :sad1: :sad1:

Aww. Thanks for the sympathy! I don't know why I posted this here. I guess I just needed to vent. LoL

Cars are money suckers - that is why I keep mine for as long as I can. I hate paying for a newer car because there is always something to fix.

That doesn't really make sense to me. The older the car, the more likely parts are going to wear out and break. Although, I am the kind of person that drives a car until it dies. My Jeep has 230,000 miles on it. Ugh, I hate to keep paying for repairs, but I also don't want a car payment. I wish I had a work from home job.

If it blew the head gasket you would know it. Maybe it will be easy to fix.

remember years ago was driving with the oil light on. I didn't know it could blow the engine but it did.  cost 3000.00 or so wow that was bad.  paid half with money the other with a credit card.  just when things are fine that changes.

Hoping its something minor.  Cars can be expensive but we do need them.

I can relate to  what you have gone through, but  that is called life. It seems like that is the way it goes around here a lot. Thank Heavens my nephew has a repair shop.  Although he does  big equipment a he will always work on Aunti's car. Bless him. So far  there hasn't been anything really super bad . But it is getting time to buy another one.

Wow, sorry to hear that. I hope it is something minor wrong with the car. I have been in that type of situation, but something always works out. Hope you still get to celebrate your 10 year anniversary.

I hate when anything happens with the car, I just want to get in and have it go.  We owned a full service station for years and our cars were always the ones that run out of gas!   LOL

I know exactly what you went through.

We had a cylinder misfire twice  $300.00 from Goodyear and $100.00 and a backyard mechanic. (I bought equipment) . (O2 Chevy Trailblazer- pretty old SUV but reliable.) After that, our headlights went out. (Not sure how much. I think it was $250. So we had those repaired by the mechanic because it was a headlight assembly issue with a short. Next, our had to have the car's water pump replaced $800. Then the alternator went and that was $250-300 and then lastly, the battery was dying. They tried didn't believe me and said it was the alternator going when they just replaced it. Now my car is fine.

Then Maya, my bearded dragon lizard, was sick from being displaced. (He contracted something called giardia- from contaminated greens.

I have been there...and go thru that too!
   Prevention, prevention...prevention is the answer.
If you have an engine oil change often, your mechanic
will do a safety inspection of your vehicle. And tell what
he thinks is wrong with your auto. If the repairs are expensive,
sell your auto and get one in better condition.

Yup. That sounds about right. Since summer, it was the radiator, then we had to replace the water pump, then the battery died, only to find out that the alternator needed to be replaced too. Now it's (hopefully) just the thermostat. My brakes are about due now. Plus a bad ball joint. And I can't even count the thousands we've spent trying to resolve the "death wobble" since it hit 60k miles. I really should start a separate savings account just for auto expenses.

Sorry about your dragon, I hope he's ok now. Giardia is pretty nasty!

If only it were that easy, I would.

So sorry you are having problems.  Hopefully the problem will be minor therefore allowing you to go on that vacation.

Thanks everyone! So I got my Jeep back, but they couldn't figure out what caused the radiator hose to pop off. The thermostat is apparently fine, and it's not overheating anymore. It's a mystery. The most irritating thing was that the two tows cost more than the repairs. And it would've been half the cost if it hadn't happened on a Sunday just before a 2-day holiday.

I hope it's something minor and you can use the rest for a vacation.  It would be nice to have a happy memory for 10 years even if it's treating yourself to a nice hotel and dinner.
