Title: Handicapp placard
Post by: melodylogan45 on January 04, 2019, 04:50:48 am
Do you prefer the placard that hangs on your rear view mirror or the one that can be put on your license plate. I use the one that hangs on my mirror so i can transfer it to another car, if i ride with someone that does not have one.

I do not have a handicapped tag.  Most of the people who have them do not truly need them.

IF you had one?  You need one and don't have one? Can I ask why you need one?  I don't know how it is any where else but where I live there are tons of cars that have these and the driver clearly does not need them.  I even know a woman who had one (I do not know how she got it) but there was nothing wrong with her.

Things are messed up.  The people who need help can't get it and the ones who are just lazy can get things easily. Grrrr.

The one I got for my mom was the hanging one because I could change vehicles and by being portable it worked better for me.

I would use the one that hangs on the rear view mirror because if you are in a different car you can just move the placard whenever you need to.

We don't have one, but  when we would be transporting hubbies aunt who at the time was 96 we used hers. because she could not walk  very  far, Most times we  took the wheelchair. But once in a while she would want to walk hanging on to him. But even then we always had the chair. Sometimes we  would have to go out to the car and get it . Always be prepared. But even then we needed the room to get it out of the car for her. And  to  just help her. So  for the most  part  we parked in the handicap. But the  a lot of the time after we had her out and in the chair we would move the van so someone else could use the space.

I prefer the hanging one...because you can remove it, put in your purse when you go to the store.
Some made the comment that people sometimes steal the license placards/plates...even if it is illegal.

Although it is true that some people have them and really don't need them, it is not true in the majority of the cases I know.  I know about 10-12 people who have a handicapped sticker and all of them have conditions that flare up at different times and make it difficult for them to be mobile.  Several have bad backs, several have sciatic conditions, and two were shot in Vietnam and have pain that comes and goes.  You can't rush to judgment!

My father has a handicap placard... for my mother, she has been dead for almost 18 years & they, the government of California, keep sending him the hanging handicap one.  He doesn't use it, but he puts it in his glove compartment just in case, at 83 he still hasn't used it.

California is an excellent example of too much government & lack of any oversight... why do they continue to send a handicap placard to someone that has been dead for almost 18 years. The same dead people who vote in the California elections probably, I should see if my mother has been voting for the past 18 years.

Thankfully I so far dont need a handicap sticker.  However to have one from a disabled person visiting you its best to have a hanging one.  We used mu pop in laws when he visited!

The hanging one definitely.  I see some pissy answers but remember you can't judge someone by what you see on the exterior.  As to how people have them who should not have one, they found someone/doctor who would sign off on one for a buck.  You need your Doctor to fill out sections of the form.

the hanging one can be transferred to the car you are in, but it is also easy to forget :) Having it on your plate means it is always there.

My Mom has her handicap placard on her license plate.  She only has one car.

At work, we have a van with a wheelchair lift.  We have a hanging placard, but it is quite obvious that the van is a handicap vehicle.  Not all the residents are in wheelchairs so sometimes we transport them in our personal vehicles, so the placard is handy.

That's crazy. I like placards. The ones on the license plates are for ones in wheel chairs

If you are talking to me, I am not being judgmental, I know for a fact there are people who have them who do not need them.  It is the same with disability.  There are people on it who do not need to be.  I talked to a woman once who got a crazy check.  She said well what if it is time to go to work and I am sad?  Well you suck it up buttercup.  Just like the rest of us and you go to work.

I doubt anybody is going to steal the tag off your car just because it is a DD tag.

LOL and again I assume this smart mouth answer is geared toward me.  If you are offended then obviously my comments apply to you.  If you are really disabled and need it then it doesn't apply to you.  Read what I said I KNOW FOR A FACT PEOPLE HAVE THEM WHO DON'T NEED THEM.  I am not judging anyone.  If you can go to an amusement park and tromp around the whole park all day then you clearly do not need a placard to park in a handicapped parking space.  I did not say everyone who has them does not need them.  I said there are some people who have them who do not need them.  Then there are others who use someone else's because they are lazy and don't want to walk.  That isn't a "pissy answer" that is the TRUTH!

LOL NO it isn't.  If you are handicapped you can get the tag for your car so you don't have the thing hanging from your rear view.  It does not mean you are in a wheel chair.

We use one for the mirror. We have an autistic daughter. Would like to try and get a plate instead.

I'm guessing the one on the license plate is a permanent one and the hanging ones have an expiration date.  Other than that, I don't know why anyone would prefer the one on the license plate.

We have a hanging placard for my car and my husband has the handicap license plate on his truck.

I thankfully don't need one yet but my mother-in law had one and the one hanging from the mirror was much better because myself, husband and daughter took her all over so it was easy to switch it from car to car.

We could only get the placard (me). The car is in my hubby's name and we can't get the plate.(that's state law.) Mine runs out in 5 years and then I have to re-apply.  BTW, my husband could have applied long ago since he had open heart surgery when he was 59 but he was too proud to do so.  When he's feeling exhausted and needs to go somewhere, he'll use the placard and park in the disabled space. . But if he feels okay that day, he won't.

IU'm grateful for that card. It's hard enough to get in and out of the car and grocery shopping can be exhausting with the walking. I won't use the motorized grocery thingies because the baskets are large enough and I'm not a very good driver of anything not a car.

Thank you!  I think the ones hanging from the mirror should have WHO is suppose to be using it and if someone else is using it then the placard should be confiscated and the person using it get a hefty fine.  I know a girl who asked a friend to borrow hers when she was going shopping and didn't want to have to walk from far off. lol

People get too bent out of shape and they do not even read the entire comment before they get butthurt and offended.  Yes, they are a good thing and a some people do need them. But a lot of people do not need them.  A lot of people can get a doctor to sign off saying they need it when in fact they do not.  Or they get a temporary one and are able to keep it for life.

Anyone who lives in this world and can not see that people abuse the system either are doing it themselves or they are so blind there is no hope for them anyway.  The last job I worked on I learned a LOT and I saw a LOT.
I had and still have an insight to the side of the system that the average person does not see.

It is easier for people who do not need help to get it than for those who do need help to be able to get it.  There is something wrong when you break your back and are told you will never walk again and it takes 3 years to get disability approved  But someone can go to the doctor and say I get sad sometimes and they are approved in a couple of months.

Someone got huffy on here with me and said you cannot tell by looking at somebody if they are disabled.  Well yes you can.  I saw a guy at Walmart who had the placard and was parked in a handicapped parking space.  The window was down on his car and I SAW him put his hand on the side of the car and literally jump thru the window to enter his car.  IF you are able to jump thru the window and enter your car then you clearly do not need the handicap parking access.

Countrygirl you are correct on one hand, but probably unaware about something else.  I agree 100% there are many people who have placecards who do not need them, but somehow got a doctor to sign for one.  You cannot always tell by looking at a person if they need one or not.  I have COPD, and have one.  If you look at me I look ok, but I have breathing problems which are really bad in the extreme cold and heat, which prohibits me from walking far.  In PA if you get a hanging card you also get a card with your name and the cards ID number.  If you are ever stoped you have to show your card.  I have had the card about 10 years and never stopped, I wish more people would be asked and if they can’t produce identification the card is taken and a fine is given, but I highly doubt that will ever happen.

Like I said, there are a lot of people who do need them.  And a lot of people who do not.  The people I am saying you can tell by looking at them YES you can tell by looking at them.  If you can walk all over an amusement park and ride the rides that sling you everywhere, go to a mall and walk all over the mall, hop out of a car and sprint in to the store, jump thru the window, things like that - you clearly do not need the card.

I never said I look at every person walking in and say oh they do not need the handicapped placard.  But there are a lot of times you can tell someone doesn't need them.
