Are you thinking "I am silently correcting your grammar" a great deal of the time? :-[
:fish:
-
Me don't think so. :)
-
No, I do not think that way, their are all kinds of learning disability, why embarrasses people for the heck of it.
-
Never, it's not my place to correct anyone's grammar. Of course I did when my kids were young, but they were my kids and my responsibility to teach them things.
-
Yes, I am silently correcting your spelling and grammar mistakes. Well, not yours. It doesn't bother me when people make mistakes in casual conversation. I realize sometimes it's auto-correct making the mistakes, because it happens to me if I'm not paying attention. It does irritate me when I see mistakes in news articles, websites, surveys and other professional pieces. If you're getting paid to write something, you need to proofread it too.

Communication can exist even amidst poor spelling, grammatical errors and bad punctuation.

^^^ This!!!
I am in 100% agreement with 1imaginarygirl
Our local newspaper is consistently guilty of this "sin" and it drives me crazy. It is one thing in a forum such as this where many users are not professional writers. It is quite another in a professional setting.
I am bothered when my children misuse their, there, they're or misspell words that they should know and I will call them out on it. I sometimes am just as agitated when it is a stranger making the mistake, but I don't usually bother to correct them, unless it is someone with a superiority complex who is being arrogant.
Probably my biggest written pet peeve is when people write "should of" or "could of" or "would of" rather than "should've; could've; would've". Yes they both sound the same, but we don't write phonetically!
-
I agree with all comments thus far, except I take exception in one case. I do not normally correct people's speech to their face, but I silently correct it in my mind because that's how my brain works. It is my strongest asset; English grammar. I also did very well with Spanish classes regarding grammar skills. I made straight A's in that class. But when it comes to communication, it was not that great a help with Spanish-speaking people. I feel that I speak Spanish at about a five-year-old level.
I especially agree that communication occurs in many odd circumstances and does not rely soley on good grammar. I discovered this fascinating fact in a Linguistics class.
I also agree that when people are paid for writing advertisements or any type of commentary; whether it be television, billboards, online ads, etc., they should make an effort to use good grammar. It's helpful in communication and there is a right way to do it. It may or may not indicate a lack of intelligence, but it does show a lack of attention to detail.

I used to be as a jerk teenager, because it's easy to get smarmy about someone's grammar online when you're insecure and out of better arguments. Now I figure if you're able to correct them, they already communicated with you successfully otherwise you wouldn't know what they meant to say, so it's you who's obstructing the conversation for no constructive reason.
-
No not really. I do get annoyed sometimes at people who are so backward and ignorant with grammar that it is hard to even follow what they are saying. I still remember in high school a girl telling me "I gidda go" You WHAT??

The surveys absolutely drive me crazy. You want my full attention and you want well thought out answers and your survey is riddled with spelling errors and something like : Which of the below include your age? And my choices are Male, Female, and about 9 genders that do not exist.
-
LIKE THE SURVEY I am doing now. We invites you to participate. Really? And you want thought out from me?

Journalists for a newspaper, especially a local paper, are not professionals. I don't really think too much about writing would of instead of would've. Maybe they need to meet a certain word number. They could write wooda lol I woulda went if I coulda got the time. lol
-
embarrasses :o, well i do read and sometimes say in my mind, they said the wrong thing or spelled it wrong. I'm doing my best not to correct ;)
-
What really bugs me, especially on FB, is people who can't use the right word. The example of their, there and they're was given. I've seen Which and witch mixed up, the same person had a "spear" tire. This is someone who's native language is English, born and raised here, so no excuse as far as I'm concerned. This is like, what, second, third grade stuff? I don't usually correct but, sheesh! Every now and then, I just can't take it and say something. You're on the internet, anyway, GOOGLE IT!!!!!
-

LOL, you have a point there. But they still get paid money to write articles for the general public to read - which should be enough reason for them to spell and conjugate things correctly! We can definitely make an argument against their "professionalism"...
-
what really gets me is when people are like "we played good" or "i did this so good". i cringe everytime and want to correct them because they should be saying well not good and they would sound so much more intelligent getting it right.
-
We're not getting stars for correct grammar anyway. I don't mean to be grammatically incorrect, it happens sometimes. Unless and until the grammar police can arrest me, it doesn't matter ;D

You get 1 post subtracted from your goal of 30 every time you post something with bad grammar in it or misuse of the their, there, or they're LOL
-
One of my pet peeves is the incorrect use of "I" and "me." "Me" is always the object of a preposition, not "I!" I don't know why that bothers me so much, but I hear it used wrong all the time. I was intimidated by my English teacher in high school, and I made sure that I learned what I was supposed to learn.
-
I catch them sometimes but never say anything.if they have written a long post and it's all correct then I look past the mistake.
-
I am not the best speller so if someone doesn't like that, I am not really concerned.
-
Not a great deal of the time but sometimes and it's not like my grammar is always perfect anyway.

Jesus said it best."Before you remove the straw from your fellow mans eye, remove it from your eye first, this way you can see more clearly."
Luke 6:42
-
Only on one specific girl. She always skips words and puts "are" instead of "our".
-
I sometimes will double check to see if the spelling is right, I may not be a perfect speller, but I can see fault on some things.
-
I am thinking you think too much on that. Move along.
-
Sometimes I'll think to myself, "Oh, that's incorrect grammar." But I would never in a million years correct somebody online about it. In most cases it's just not that important. Now, if one of my kids is writing a school paper, then I'll point it out, LOL! :peace:
-
My grammar was Italian,NOT a *bleep*!!
-
I just laugh at grammar nazis because they're just bored people with no lives. Their life goal feeling the need to correct someone all the time is kinda redundant. Good for them getting that brownie points of self-accomplishment
-
I don't do that because I'm a terrible speller so I don't judge.
-
It only bothers me when it's blatantly wrong. We all mess up grammar sometimes but when it's a mistake that should be common sense, then I get annoyed.

I disagree wholeheartedly.
This may be apples to oranges (grammar vs. punctuation), but I heard about this story (https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/as-it-happens-monday-edition-1.5380932/apostrophe-protection-society-shuts-down-after-18-years-blaming-ignorance-and-laziness-1.5380935) earlier today and it made me sad. A 96 year old man ended his 18 year old fight to save the 'apostrophe' from abuse and misuse. He had an honorable goal, but the ignorance of people won out...
-
I would never pay attention to someone who says they correct others grammar regarding their grammar. Who says you are using proper grammar. Pettiness abounds..
-
It bothers me but not to the point of correcting someone to hurt someone's feelings over. Thank goodness for auto correct sometimes.
-
I loved English, and unfortunately, my brain just automatically does it.
-
I used to be like that. [shrug]
