Title: Caffeine & decaf coffee
Post by: pectacon on December 19, 2019, 09:14:25 am
I drank 1 cup of coffee every morning for years and recently switched to decaf and boy I didn't think it would bother me so much. I get an awful drowsy, cranky headache all day. Didn't think 1 cup of coffee would make that big a deal. Am I sensitive or is everybody like that?

Also does anybody know a good decaf brand that doesn't taste like bitter dirty socks? Our costco stopped carrying the one we liked :(

I haven't had regular coffee in many years, but I have heard tales of how hard it is to wean oneself off of it.  I drink decaf regularly.  I like the Green Mountain breakfast blend, but some days it tastes better than other days.  I wish I could make a cup of decaf that tasted as good as some I get in restaurants.  Waffle House has great tasting decaf and also, Panera Bread.  Maybe it has something to do with the pot or the way it is brewed.

It is all in your head. lol.  I worked in restaurants in the past.  And we just used regular nothing special coffee.  Places like Shoney's use Sysco coffee.  And it is just brewed in a industrial (which just means bigger and able to withstand all day use) coffee pots.  There is nothing special done.  The coffee also comes pre-measured in bags.

I normally buy my coffee from 711 but when I tried decaf, it didn't work for me. The drowsiness part happened to me before too after drinking and hours later. I don't know of a decaf brand at all..

Yes the caffeine can be hard to wean yourself off of.  I drink regular coffee and when I have to go to the Dr. for blood tests fasting, I can tell I haven't had my caffeine yet .  I'm sure you can get off it gradually.  Maybe mixing 50/50 for a while???

I read somewhere to add a dash of salt to your coffee grounds, before brewing, and it will take the bitterness out. Ive been doing it ever since, I normally drink caffeinated, but once in a while I really want a cup of coffee in the evenings and will drink decaf.

Only drink real coffee, but I have my favorite brands. I baby it up with cream and sugar, but I don't like to drink decaf. It's not the real thing, baby.

I'm sorry you're having trouble with caffeine, pectacon. I don't think I drink enough of it to have a problem. Plus, I'm cranky with real coffee.  >:( I can't imagine what would happen if I changed to decaf.

:fish:

Addendum: You will probably experience withdrawal if you're trying to stop drinking caffeine drinks, but the effects of withdrawal will eventually end if you stick with it. I personally don't see the need, but if you do see the need, then persevere. You can do it!

I only drink about 3 to 4 cups of coffee a week, but I still pretty drowsy when I try to switch to decaf (which I haven't had in a few years). As far as a decaffeinated brand that doesn't taste like bitter, dirty socks (LOL!), I haven't yet found a brand that would fit that bill!  :peace:

I have only always just drink decaf so I don’t notice any difference I would say it’s just a caffeine headache and your body will adjust I hope for your sake anyway

I pretty much only drink coffee for the caffeine. My mom doesn't like caffeine, and drinks green tea instead (decaf). I don't think I'd ever drink much decaf coffee at all. If Folgers or Starbucks makes a decaf coffee blend, I'm sure they would be pretty good, though.

Thank you! Others in my house can't have caffeine so I figured I'd just get used to decaf too because there's no sense making 2 pots of coffee every morning. I'll get there in a few days I'm sure!

Just can't imagine how bad it would be if I was one of those people who drink like 10 coffees and 4 redbulls per day. Yikes.

I'm not a big coffee drinker but I usually fall asleep faster as a result.

I understand how you feel. I'm so reliant on coffee and don't feel right if I don't have a cup in the morning, too.

I don't drink decaf coffee because I need the caffeine to wake me up.

I drink real coffee, did not like decaf, make a pot of a morning and have the last cup around 3 in the afternoon.

@claudegrizzle, my daughter bought a bag of Starbucks coffee and accidentally got decaf instead of the regular blend that she thought she was getting.  She doesn't drink decaf, so she gave it to me and I was pleasantly surprised.  I really liked it, and I usually think Starbucks is too bitter!  It was Starbucks Pike Place Roast, (for all you decaf lovers.)

I am not the person to ask about Decaf for sure.  I drink one cup in the morning and I don't want it to be decaf.  My sister and brother in law do decaf and sprinkle a little regular coffee on top before it brews and they swear by it.  But I don't drink it when I am at their house.

I drink about 2-3 cups of regular coffee every day.  I have several favorite brands.  As far as de-caf is concerned, I can tell the difference.  To me, de-caf has a bit of a nasty taste.  I think you have to get used to it and there is probably a brand or two you will like better than others.  The headaches is the symptom of caffeine withdrawal.  We don't think of caffeine as a drug, but it actually is.  I think sugar acts like a drug in your brain also.  With time and perseverence, your body will adjust!  Good luck!!

I recently also switched to decaf but didn't get the bad reaction you are getting. In fact, it helped me quite a bit by making my high blood pressure go back to normal in the mornings. Why don't you try mixing half decaf with half caffein coffee for a while to see if you can do a little better? I use Folgers instant decaf in the morning and it tastes OK. Not great, but acceptable.

I had to quit drinking coffee about 12 years ago.  I developed vertigo and the doctors were puzzled as to what was triggering it.  I had to start eliminating things (foods, drinks, etc.) until we nailed it down to the black coffee that I drank from sun up to sun down was triggering the vertigo.  I quit drinking coffee and haven't had an episode since.

I am not a huge fan of (hot) coffee. However, I do LOVE iced coffee, especially from Dunkin Donuts.

I, usually, only drink regular coffee, just not a lot of it.  Regular coffee is supposed to help protect against Alzheimers.  I do have Afib, though, so I try not to irritate it too much with lots of coffee.  I did switch out my pop to decaf.  I also have fibro so don't sleep much at night and, now, will fall asleep at my desk during the day because I'm not getting much caffeine anymore.

I know a guy I use to work with drank red bull all the time.  He drank 6-8 of them one day while sitting and playing one of them video games that actually has the warnings on that it can cause some medical problem. I guess it takes a lot of energy to play video games. haha     Anyway, he ended up in the ER.  I think he gave up red bull after that.

I did not start drinking coffee till about eleven years ago. I started off with gateway coffee concoctions. From a Mochas and Snicker Bars to spending way too much on Carmel Macciatos at Starbucks. After reading a book on minimalism I started weaning myself off all of the additives and switched to Lattes and eventually graduated to Americanos and quadruple espressos. I bought an espresso machine so that I would stop spending so much on StarbucksI invested the savings into shares of Starbucks and have done quite well on capital appreciation.  I started my present day job at around that time and was surrounded by attorneys who swore by a coffee called "Deathwish" which was more expensive but contained lethal amounts of caffeine. I have been one of their biggest fans ever since. I am slurping one down as I type. I have tried "X" from South Africa (which is touted as having more caffeine) but found that it caused internal bleeding. I will have a "Nitro" from Starbucks every once in awhile.
