So my father-in-law told me one time he bought a device to go on his roof to seek internet towers , anyone knows what this might be. with Xfinity allowing anyone to use their hotspots I could use an internet boost

Is it a WiFi extender/booster ?  Try looking that up.

So he says his is a wifi amplifier but not clear as to whether it would work on other devices
