Title: Child Support & Stimulus Checks
Post by: Mizzkizz7 on April 17, 2020, 11:39:07 pm
It looks like anyone who owes arrears in child support won't be receiving their money. It will be applied to their child support case. I feel they should get a break but IDK, what do you think?

I said the same thing on another post.  But it should be analyze if you have made effort to pay and now you can't because of the situation then you should get a break, but the ones that are just delinquent and don't care to pay then NO.

Uh no. You need to support your kids. Not expect the tax payers to do it. Too many dead beats.

There is nothing to analyze.  If you owe back child support then you have not been making an effort.  If you are not paying the past 2 months because of the current situation it would not be turned in as delinquent yet.  I use to work on a job where we had to turn in all new employees and as soon as the deadbeat was found again and their check was garnished for child support they quit.  This is also not fair to the employer because as an employer it is not MY responsibility to pay YOUR child support.  I say pay it or put them in jail.  Make them work and take all the earnings from job they work while in jail and put toward raising the child they are not supporting.

Haven't gotten mine yet -- stimulus check.  Will either rent a place or buy a car and live out of it for a couple weeks.

My daughter and son-in-law have custody of his kids from a former marriage.  The ex-wife is paying child support, not a lot mind you, but a few years back she went for several months and didn't pay anything.  If she doesn't get her stimulus check does this mean that the parents who are suppose to get the child support will get that money.

If it were not for this covid NO there would be no hand outs of money. They would have no reason to just give everybody money. I just think they should give everyone the same thing. Seems like some get more and more and more and others barely get anything.

In absolutely ZERO circumstances should anyone get one penny of stimulus money if they are delinquent on child support payments regardless of the circumstances. No exceptions.

I can see both sides to this.  The Irs really doesn't have the time to check every thing out.  Just issue the money let the individuals work it out.

Just think of it this way... It is free money. Money you don't have to pay for out of your hard-worked income.  I know many local friends that complained at first, but then realized just this. And now, because of the free money paying towards their old child support, it is paid off. (for some, of course)  Now their checks will be more :)  I'd call that a win in my book.

I think it should go to child support. My daughter is in the middle of a divorce, unfortunately child support hasn't been determined and her husband who was working until 2 days ago gives her very little even though she works in the restaurant industry and has been laid off for a month. Luckily she did get her check for herself and their daughter, so shes struggling but the check sure helped. But when Child support is determined he is going to owe a lot in arrears, but it wont help her now.

I disagree 1000%. Not all, but many people who are in arrears in paying support aren't going to simply pay more to catch up out of the goodness of their hearts when this stimulus money comes in. If we just "let the individuals work it out" nothing will change and the kid who is supposed to be supported will continue to be neglected.

No. It should not be voluntary or left up to the individuals. It should be government imposed.

Good.  Some people do anything to get out of paying child support.  If they didn't care about their child eating then we shouldn't care they didn't get a check.

I was talking from my son-in-law point of view, he pays his child support but he was out of work for a while prior to now, when he moved to a different state it took him a few months to get a good job so he got behind,  he has been paying as much as he can to get back to normal until now, he works for restaurants and is out of work, he pays every month he lives in 1 state his son in another, and they will not give him his stimulus because he is still behind, even with him paying every month more than he is told to pay so he can cover the behind payments.  I know is not for the government to sort it out, but some of them do make an effort to pay and still are punished for it.

Well your daughter is free to give him part of the money back.  Usually child support is set by how much you make.
