Do any of you make homemade bread? I am fixing to try to make some. Our grocery store has a cheese bread and a jalapeno cheese bread that are both really good. A local woman use to make sour dough bread and sell it. She must have done it for enjoyment because what she charged for it could not have even paid for her ingredients. :confused1:
I remember seeing a recipe for a pepperoni bread a few years ago. I am excited about coming up with some new recipes.

My son and I make a lot of rosemary and thyme flatbread. We get about 12 flatbreads out of one recipe, then put them in the freezer and use as needed (or wanted). It is really good! Homemade bread is so, so, so much better than the store-bought bread. And you can make any kind you want, kinds that might not be found in your grocery store. Good luck with your bread-baking endeavors, countrygirl12, and let us know what you come up with! :peace:

That sounds so so so good. I don't think I have ever had that before. My mother makes so many homemade things and I surprised that she has never made home made bread.
-
I have never made it but it tastes much better than store bought.
-
It has been a long time since I've made a yeast bread from scratch.
I have made a few different recipes of KETO bread in the past few months. Still looking for a great recipe.

I actually bought a bread machine. I had one in the past but I gave it away. Wish I had kept it. Anyway not sure if flat bread will work in that. I have seen recipes on Pinterest for flat breads. I am excited about some of the different flavors.

Our local grocery store makes breads. They have some good ones. I have never bought anything like sandwich bread. Usually it is a fancy bread that is marked down.

I was going to ask if you were using the oven or a bread machine, then I saw this reply. I have a bread machine, but it never turns out right. The crust is always too hard and the middle not quite done. I follow the directions, but apparently, I'm still doing something wrong.
I'm terrible in the kitchen. :(

I used to use a bread machine. I don't bake.. I love home made bread. I should get back into using my bread maker.
-
We buy this frozen bread dough and then my son makes all kinds of stuff with it. We were going to try and make some from scratch but never could find bread flour or yeast. The Bridgeford frozen is excellent though.

I actually do not have the bread machine yet. lol I had one and I gave it away. Regretted it several times. I have a bread machine ordered. Should have in the next day or two. As far as your bread not turning out quite right - I would blame the bread machine lol. It could also be your recipe. I made pretzels a few weeks ago and followed the recipe exactly. But the dough was too wet and I could not roll the dough out to make an actual pretzel so I made like pretzel blobs. haha I got the recipe off Pinterest and most were saying the same thing. But you can't just keep adding flour to make the dough the right consistency because it won't taste right. I would like to have a good recipe for pretzels.

I had a bread machine years ago, I can’t remember the brand. It never turned out ok. I’m sure times have improved since them, I think I’ll look into buying one, I would love to make homemade bread. Our one mom and pop grocery store made homemade bread every Wednesday and the lines were so long for the bread, it was so good, but he passed away and she sold the store. 😥
-
Last year for a little while I made sour dough bread. I only made it for my family and also gave some of the loaves away for Christmas.
-
i don't eat a lot of bread now. i do remember making bread with my mother. nothing warm bread with melting butter Yum!
Just about anything homemade is better than store bought.
have fun with bread making! :rose: :rainbow: :peace:

I wish I know how to bake bread
-
I used to make my own bread and my own butter but that was years ago. I used to make some for hubby's hunting camp. I first only made a loaf for the 3-day camp. They liked it so much, they would eat it all the same night. So for next year, I made 10 loaves for the 5 guys. Gone the second day. That was back before bread machines and dough hooks for mixers.

I remember churning butter once when I was a kid.

lol Well..... I am hoping since it is basically dumping the stuff in to a machine it will work. I sure hope so. I know what you mean about older folks and using their recipes. I am convinced they leave a step out when they pass it on so yours is never quite as good. :)
I made chicken and dumplings once and my pappaw was not easy to please. He said it tasted almost as good as what his momma made. Mammaw told me you have no idea how big of a compliment that is.
-
sounds good...i have made some bread a few times...nothing makes a house smell better than bread baking...
-
I am going to try making sourdough bread when it is not so warm at my house.
-
I love homemade bread, but i'm usually too lazy to make it. I will however make homemade beer bread. It tastes great and is so easy to make!! Beer, flour, sugar, and salt. Done!

Awe thats something to treasure :)
LOL About leaving a step out. Yeah maybe they do LOL!
I know I have a couple recipes I just wont share with others
Oh and I have made sourdough bread before, with a starter I made. I cant recall how it turned out tho. but I know not everyone likes the taste of sourdough bread. That sounds so good right now! I like it when making a grilled/toasted sandwich. I wonder what it would taste like as a pizza crust

I just got the machine and I am looking for a recipe because the ones that came with it are basic. I found a cheddar cheese bread that I wanted to try but it calls for kosher salt and I don't even know what that is. I assume I will not have that. I have everything else. I read something in my book and thought about you. It says to always add the yeast last and to not let the yeast come in to contact with any liquid. I did not know that. The pretzel recipe I found on Pinterest said to mix the yeast with the water. My bread book that I got with this machine says do not ever do that and it will mess up the consistency of the bread. It says dig a small hole in the flour and put the yeast there.
Maybe I will look for a sour dough bread recipe for the first one. I like that. There is no way to make the cheese bread like the grocery store does unless I made the bread then sprinkle cheese on top (cause theirs has it on the top) and then put back in oven for a few. This bakes the bread basically on it's side. Like long ways. If that makes sense.

:) ;Dlooks good to me
-
There's nothing quite like homemade bread! Get it when it's just out of the oven, sooo great with butter! I haven't done it in years and surely miss it.

Kosher salt is like sea salt - large chunks instead of fine grains. It's good at drawing moisture out of veggies and meat. (My ex scolded me once because I didn't kosher salt my zucchini before I added it in my lasagna. ::)) It also doesn't have additives, like iodine in table salt. I'm pretty sure you can substitute table salt, but you may want to use a little less.

I have never made homemade bread but have been given banana bread from my friends before

I have pretzel salt and also sea salt so I wondered if the sea salt would work. I need powdered milk for the recipe I am going to use. IF I can find it. Our Walmart has been out of it for weeks. They have a couple in stock now but it may be gone by the time I get there. I would not think that would be a super popular item because it is not good to drink and I am not sure how well it would work in a recipe that takes milk either.

I make Irish soda bread but nothing else.

I don't know what that is but may look in to that. I have heard of soda bread. This has a recipe for fruit cake and you can also make jam and jelly in it. It even has a recipe for Greek Yogurt. I saw something on Pinterest that is some kind of flat bread. I thought about trying that but from my experience a lot of stuff on Pinterest does not turn out too good. I don't know why. It is not just me because if you look at the comments a lot of others have the same issues I have.

Years ago I had a bread machine. My first loaf, though delicious, cost $200. I made a second loaf and figured I now had 2 $100 loaves. Eventually I gave up on the bread machine and just made it in bread pans in the oven. There is NOTHING as good as homemade bread.

I always add my yeast to warmed sugar water.
Id think the water way makes the yeast start faster. And therefor it would be a quick cooking bread.
So breads you bake longer you just add dry yeast, so it wont rise as fast and be denser
Im only guessing here, those who bake bread would probably know.
Let us know what you decide to make, and how it turned out :)

I finally found powder milk at Walmart this morning. YAY

What I read said the liquid messes the yeast up. Idk. I always done what you said as well. I have the bread in the machine now. I will let you know. I am on the phone with customer support with a woman I cannot understand at all. I have a question that she does not seem to understand. All she does is repeat what I said back to me or part of what I said back to me. Or answer something totally off the wall. Smh.

Since the quarantine my wife has been making bread since she has more time on her hands. It has been pretty good so far.
-
I had to throw the first loaf away. I finally did figure out what went wrong. I made a second loaf (white bread) and it turned out pretty good. I want some fancy bread recipes. Not had a lot of time to look. Most recipes I am finding do not tell the size of the loaf. I have to input the weight on the machine before starting the process.

What brand did you get? I'm really interested in getting one but there are way too many to choose from. I want one that able to make different kinds

I've only made homemade banana bread.
-
check youtube for bread maker recipes for beginners maybe?
Its trial and error. You will get it right! Might make some sinkers a few times in the process :)
-
We do not make homemade bread, but we make banana pudding, with the ripened bananas...Delicious!!!
-
I love making bread during the holidays twice a year. The hard way with my hands . Its a process but its worth it in the end

That is for sure. lol I made a cinnamon raisin bread that turned out really good.

We've been making a lot of homemade bread, lately. So much better than store bought bread!

Bread machine? It is a Pohl Schmitt. I really like it. This has 17 settings. It sounds intimidating and reading the book sounds intimidating. But when you start using it then it really is not. The reason I had to throw the first loaf away was my fault. I messed up the recipe. I did not put enough water in it. I made a cinnamon raisin bread and it was awesome. I found a recipe on Pinterest that is an herb and chives. I have fresh chives in my garden so I am wanting to make that next. The plain white bread was okay but it is just that - plain white bread. Nothing exciting. haha
Once you add your ingredients and start machine you do not have to do anything until it beeps telling you to take the pan out of the machine.

lol I make this with my hands. I just mix and bake in one machine instead of mixing and putting dough in oven. If you make sour dough bread you still have to do all the extra stuff. I do not think I will make any of that. Too much work.
-
I don't do baking when it comes to bread. I have said to myself that one day I will give it a try but not now.
-
No and i don't know anyone that makes bread. They all passed away.
-
One of my sisters did it before but stopped few years later I do remember it being enjoyable to eat.
-
I wish I had that talent; love the taste of homemade bread but have to wait for friends or family members to bake.

You do not need talent. Buy a bread machine. Follow a recipe. lol It does all the work.

Personally, I have never made bread at home. However, my grandmother used to on several occasions when I was younger. She made very delicious bread. Ugh. Now, I have the urge and call and ask her to make some for me, LOL.
