Should DC become the 51st state? What do you think?
-
hadnt heard anything...but no problem with it
-
No, it's unconstitutional which states: "...To exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over such District (not exceeding ten Miles square) as may, by Cession of particular States, and the Acceptance of Congress, become the Seat of the Government of the United States, and to exercise like Authority over all Places purchased by the Consent of the Legislature of the State in which the Same ......"
In other words, the federal government should never be subservient to a state. Granting statehood to DC would place the safety and security of the President and Congress in the hands of whoever is in control of DC if turned into a state.. The founding fathers were specifically concerned about exactly that when they decided that the federal capital would not be located in any state but remain neutral in matters of the states.

I dont care either way.

LOL The founding fathers said a lot of stuff that has been thrown out the window.

For the most part - me either. I have not heard anything about it. But I would need more info on why and what difference it would make. Would this not make a state in the middle of another state, kind of like an island?

i understand why it isn't a state. At the same time i have never heard of any attempts being made for DC a state. it shouldn't be a state we really couldn't have a separate functioning federal government. Even tough i not crazy about federal government we still need it. :rainbow: :peace:

I do not think that the capital should become a state. This is only an unfair political move by the dems...

Certain people have been trying to make D.C. a state at least since 1963. The latest has been 2020 when the mayor or D.C. stated if Biden wins, they (meaning D.C.) will become the 51st state. There are still a lot of those in Congress that follow the Constitution and don't think D.C. should ever be a state because the federal government does need neutrality in governing. It would be hard to decide how to be this state when D.C. consists of areas from both Virginia and Maryland states. I don't think those two states would want to lose any more land to make another state.

I think they should leave things as they are.

I don't care. If the become one great if they don't great. Doesn't effect my life for the better or worse.

That was what I thought too. I don't think it can be a state.

Democrats want it so they can add another senator & more congress which is not needed gov is already bloated enough. Its hte dems pushing this idea just like they want to make Porto Rico a state

I thought I read that it is the 51st state now. Course I could have read wrong. My dyslexia kicks in.

I'm leaning toward that it should remaining a separate entity.

This point stated above by minioncookies is the only reason it is being proposed - to ensure two more D senators to keep the senate votes solidly on the D side of things. DC should not become the 51st state. It is a CITY. It has none of the characteristics that make a state "a state". It was formed when two other states agreed to give up a tiny portion of their land areas to create a national capital separate and apart from any state (for legitimate reasons).
-
Is it a good or a bad idea for the Country?
Pros and cons.
-
Who really cares and why not. I don't think many people care about it.
-
I don't care either way. But I live in the area and as I understand it, the DC citizens can vote on elections but have no representation, the areas where the Federal buildings are cannot be managed by the City, hence what happened on January 6, DC had no authority to get involve on the Capitol unless the ask for help. But also they cannot make any decisions towards the City needs without consent even when it is in an area not Federal land, not even their budget they need Congress to agree on everything the City spends and there is always a fight since Republicans and Democrats can never agree on anything. If it is Constitutional or not I don't know and really dont' care either way.

This explains a lot.
