Title: Racist Remark At Walmart.
Post by: GoGoKokiGo on March 18, 2010, 06:55:00 am
I guess someone at Wal-Mart went over the P.A. system and said "Attention, Wal-mart customers: All black people, leave the store now."
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Black-people-must-leave-NJ-apf-1749619349.html?x=0
Some people are super angry about it and are going to boycott the store. Well actually I don't think it's some people, it just a lady and her friend (so far I guess). I personally think they should get over it. It's not like the president of Wal-Mart said it himself (herself?). It was probably just another customer anyhow. I mean you don't blame the soup if a fly lands on it do you? I'm pretty sure Wal-Mart has some employee rules that state "Please don't pick out a certain race and ask them to leave the store."

The lady that wants to boycott said that "I depended on Walmart  for all my needs, because the store has pretty much everything you could want" and "But until this issue is addressed in a way I'm comfortable with, I can't walk through those doors again." That sounds like someone who is going to have her issues addressed with gift cards to be comfortable. Who gets angry at a store then say it has pretty much everything you could want? If I was angry at a store I would say something like: "I really liked it before this incident, but now I'm going to burn this mother down."

It was most likely a joke. A really bad one, but a joke none the less. I don't even shop at Wal-Mart so this isn't a really big deal for me. I just think some people take some bad things and run a little too far with it. I'm pretty sure one of you is thinking: "Hey you don't understand because you're not black!" Well for one, how did you know? And two, if someone went over the P.A. system at a store I shopped at and said: "All mixed race shoppers, leave the store." I actually think I would find it funny and wouldn't try to boycott everything that moved. But that's just me. Any thoughts?

I think I would just not go to that particular store. Wal Mart is great in saving money. You can't throw away all the apples just because there is one bad apple in the bunch.

It was probably a dumb employee that thought the P.A. was off and decided to do a joke.

We used to get on the intercom and joke around when I was a teenager. We used to page people to the condom department, or say a customer needs help finding strawberry douche, silly stuff like that. I imagine that is what happened here, and you can't blame Walmart.

I would think Wal-mart would take more precautions to keep customers off of their pa systems after this. It would be rather mean to hear this and I do not blame the woman. I think wal-mart should come out with a public apology to this person and all people for allowing something like this to happen. All people are created equal, and when a person walks into their store, they should be treated with decency and integrity, this is a total fail on walmarts part.

unfortunate story, but at the same time, I think some people are overreacting and overgeneralizing about Walmart-chill out a bit, it's not like walmart is suddenly bad b/c one comment that might have not even have been from the store itself

I agree that it was a sorry incident to have happened. But at the same time people shouldn't be so sensitive that if something like that happens they immediately target Walmart. It would be like someone boycotting FC because some idiot wrote some racist remark in the forums. At least here FC can delete any such comment made as well as ban the person from FC. I'm sure if Walmart had known who was responsible, they'd be banning the person from the store as well. Who knows?... It may have even been a form of corporate sabotage: have a K-mart employee make the announcement on the Walmart PA in hopes that shoppers would indeed boycott Walmart and favor K-mart instead...

It would be a different matter if "No Black People Allowed" became a corporate policy, if there were e-mails passed between executives urging store managers to prohibit Hispanics from shopping, or even if a customer were to make such an announcement to then condone what was said.  :peace:

COME ON!!! This is stupid and probably some jerk trying to go for the deep pockets. Wal-Mart is a huge target with a big green money bag as the bullseye. I scanned the article, but I didn't notice anyone died, did you? Like the one black guy said, he has heard a lot worse, but probably not from anyone who had a lot of money to go after.

Personally I think its funny, if I heard over walmart PA "All white people leave the store" I wouldn't be offended I would just laugh. Obviously the person has no real authority to tell people to leave the store. Just some moran playing a joke. Shouldn't of been said but not really a big deal. The lady who complained just wants her 5 minutes of fame.

The first sentence of the article says they apologized. AND they chagrined.

And I bet if someone did that people would probably think it was still racist to black people by implying that blacks are poor or something and are the people who need to stay at Walmart. (since Walmart has awesome prices.)

No one ever thinks of white racism, only black racism.

I agree it was in really bad taste, whoever played the joke. (It had to be a joke by an employee or another customer) I hear they are looking at survellince tapes trying to pin down who it was. I also agree if it is determined to be an employee, they should be fired on the spot. If it was a customer, I suppose you could ban them from the store. I think they need to secure their PA system, have a code to punch in before it works or something.

There is a code. It is usually the number of the store. And no that doesn't mean go get on the PA speakers at Wal-Mart to announce your referral link to everyone...

It's just crappy that stuff like this happens at all. It isn't worth a boycott, but why do we need to pick on each other in the year 2010?

Poor Wal-Mart  :-[  First the guy with the baseball bat to all the tvs in the electronics department, now a crazy employee/customer making a fool of themselves and being racist.  I personally wouldnt hold that against Wal-Mart as a whole, I don't shop there anyway, but that's because I can't stand the company.

I don't think it was a very good thing to say.  I don't think it's an employee who said it ans I don't think Walmart is to blame for what is said.  They are to blame, though, for the fact that the PA system was in a location where anybody could have access to it, especially because I'm sure this wasn't the first incident they've had, just the most offensive.

I dont think it is walmarts fault and they should not be blamed. hopefully security cameras will show who it was so that the individual can be held liable.

That is very true! I have found many times that I am picked on for being the only white person at various times. I actually date a black man so um yeah ...

While I don't think the comment was a joke, I also don't think it is necessary to go overboard with protest or boycotts. The comment and the media aftermath are just sad commentaries on how far we haven't come. In our current atmosphere of political correctness, you would think we would finally get it, it's just a shame that some people never will.

I will bet those ignorant people won't think it is so funny if we took our money to Target instead. We are 67% of Walmart's Revenue.

Oh I am not advocating a boycott, I just felt one good prank deserves another. Yeah we all did stupid teenage stuff. Shoot I called myself directing traffic at the busy intersection of 14th and K streets in DC so my then girlfriend could cross the streets. Teen pranks are not the issue, but the ramifications of said pranks are.

See things like this are proof positive that even though they think they may have something to say, not everyone should be allowed the microphone.

I think that is so sad.  In terms of the race issue, the US has come a long way, but there are still many racial problems in this country.  The US still has a long way to go.

It is just another kid getting on the intercom playing around. Stuff like that happens all the time. No matter where you are, there is always going to be some racist people. I don't let any of it bug me. It's life, get over it. I just hate how some people think they are now owed better treatment because their kind was treated wrong in the past.

people just need to lighten up, if someone said all white people leave the store then I doubt this would have spread too much. it was just some teenager being dumb, we all did stupid things at that age, maybe not that bad, but we still caused mischief.

also, EVERY country has racial problems and there will ALWAYS be racial issues. the only thing we can do is just learn to be mature about it
