Title: What do you all think about homeschooling?
Post by: 2getherwewin on June 11, 2010, 09:53:36 am
Homeschooling is great!  I have homeschool for two years going on.  I really enjoy it.  That I can be apart of that progress in my childrens lives.  Just seeing how smart kiids are.  It is amazing and at other times it can be tough.

I think it's a good idea. I'm a public school teacher. I feel that school is too often a brutal, chaotic environment for children where decisions are made by people who don't know or care about the kids' needs. Also, lots of time is wasted on paperwork and testing that have nothing to do with helping kids learn. Add to that budget cuts that have increased class sizes, decreased money for field trips, and removed arts programs! I try my best, but this is a heartbreaking situation.

Never doubt that you're doing the right thing for your children. Just make sure that they spend some time playing with their friends once they have finished studying.

Homeschooling can be great because the kids get so much extra attention. However, make sure they either participate in sports or spend time with friends because it's important that they learn social skills as well.

Where I grew up, homeschooling was frowned upon because it consisted of unprepared parents taking spoiled little Johnny out of school because the teachers were unfair to him. Never mind that Johnny was selling drugs in the hall, setting the library on fire, etc. I was surprised to come to the Pacific Northwest and see involved parents who teach what they can and follow the state homeschool programs for the rest. They really make sure the kids are doing the work and then some. 90% of the ones I have come into contact with do Running Start and have their Associate's Degrees by the time they graduate from high school. I am now a believer!

I think it's great if you can be consistant enough to follow through.  Make sure your child has plenty of opportunities to socialize.  Lot's of field trips.
Anybody heard of unschooling? 8)

No matter how great of a parent you are there comes a time when the influence of the others around your child outweighs anything you say. That is why homeschooling is great. In elementary school it will keep your child from getting bullied. In middle school it will prevent them from getting cocky. And in high school it will keep them away from sex drugs and alcohol. I know by personal experience. I just recently graduated high school and these are the vices that plague public schooling.

How old are your kids? I homeschool my 12 year old.

I was home schooled, but online. It was so much easier for me! I learned a lot quicker then when I was in public school.

In general, I think homeschooling is a weak idea. For the most part, parents aren't informed enough or have enough time to help their children learn effectively, let alone having enough of a knowledge base of material to get their kids into good colleges.

:cat: I homeschooled my 3 children for several years.  We were under an "umbrella" home school group.  We met weekly for chapel services.  Afterwards, they would take elective classes (Science Lab, Music, Photography, PE, etc.)  Then everyone gathered back together for refreshments, chatting, outside play, etc.  It made for a long, busy, but fun and rewarding day.  My children enjoyed homeschooling.  Also, I am a teacher, as well, who taught in the system before taking time to homeschool, and am back teaching now that they are adults.

Kids are tested regularly by the state
I think most public schools are a waste of time
But there are some parents out there that really shouldn't be homeschooling

I was homeschooled from Kindergarten thru 6th grade. I loved it, and I intend to homeschool my son.
Public schools here in Oregon are a joke. If you want your child to be bilingual then yeah, but even then, your child wont have as much attention to their schoolwork as the Hispanic students. Dont get me wrong, I have no problem with ANYONE, I just feel that students should get an equal amount of attention in public schools. Afterall, those who pay taxes pay into the schools.

Homeschooling is a good idea for those who are okay with teaching. Some parents should not teach their children, as they dont have a clue to what they are doing. However, there are curriculums that take parents step by step through teaching, and most people can teach them just fine.

If you intend to homeschool, check your states laws, as most states require testing. Ususally testing accurs in 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7-12th.
Also I think its ok for parents to want to homeschool, but hire a private teacher to do the lessons.

I think home schooling is ok for some people if the person giving the education is certified with a degree and has enough education to teach someone else.

But for me if I had children I would prefer public or private school because even though home school allows the child individual attention there's still a lot of other benefits to going to public or private school. such as being able to socialize with other kids and having friends apart from family, and going to school events like prom, and there are more academic benefits too, also developing good social skills is important in life, especially in a business setting that might require lots of interaction with people, and sometimes that may be lacking with children that grow up isolated at home with only there brother sister or parents, unless the parents have other outlets where there children can be with other kids or teens there age.

I speak from experience some teens or kids may have had great experience's being home schooled but not all kids do, I didnt. but I still understand and respect the parents that believe in this method of teaching there kids. but as I said home schooling was not the happiest time in my life, and if I could have done things a bit differnt I would have.
:( :)

Homeschooling is great if you wanna raise one of those freaks I saw on the spelling bee. You can't protect your kids from everything forever. Man, kids are becoming more and more wussy. We teach them that they are special for no reason at all and we don't even keep score in T-ball anymore.

The result? An entire generation of people that live with their parents til they are 30.  Do you kids a favor and push them out of the nest. And stop treating your boys like girls.

I would think of homeschooling as being a last resort in a situation /w for example, a teen mom who cannot afford daycare.

Homeschooling would be good if your parents are teachers already and have retired but I always thnk a child should have the traditional schooling.  Go to school hang with friends,do schoolwork and then come home and do homework.  It could scar a kid if he is around his parents all the time ya know or even if they have a teacher come in to the house and teach, I wouldnt want to be at home all day would you?

I think homeschooling is great for families that have two parents in the household.  I mean me being a single parent would not be able to do it because I have to work, then come home and fix dinner.  So home schooling would not be good for me, but I am not against it.

My parents also pulled me out of the public schooling system in order to homeschool my siblings and me. I honestly think it was the best decision they could have made. I graduated a couple years ago and now attend a private college over 12 hours from my home town. The typical stereotypes as mentioned above come from a very common misconception about homeschoolers: they lack social skills. I'm not going to try to tell you that all homeschoolers are as socially experienced as public schooled kids, but you cannot tell me that homeschool kids are known for being as rude and unintelligent as the majority of public schooled kids.

Most homeschooled kids don't socialize as well with other kids but they can communicate with adults. They also receive a better education because it is a system designed for them in particular. Is the system perfect? No. The easiest way to fix many of the faults lies in ensuring that your kids don't stay home all the time. Having friends is important. At the same time, kids that grow up in dysfunctional families often don't know how to form real relationships when they're older or resolve conflict.

If you're thinking about homeschooling, my advice to you is to give it a try. Connect with other homeschooling families in your communities for support. It will be hard at times but in the end you'll have confident, intelligent kids that know how to socialize and are able to excel in whatever capacity they're in.

I think it's a good and bad thing. It's always a positive and negative side to everything that we do. I think that homeschooling is a great way for a child who has difficulty learning in a large class size setting; homeschooling will give them more of a one-on-one way to learn without the fear of falling behind. It's just the child and the instructor; there are no distractions from other students who don't have the same problem(s) as they may have learning. I also think that it's a great way for children who have physical health issues and not physically able to attend outside education facilities. Children in those, unfortunate, situations are able to maintain their education and keep up with other kids who are in their same age/grade level through homeschooling. The down-side of homeschooling is that it may cause some social developmental issues. Kids may develop a problem with being able to socialize and interact well with other of their same age group. So if a child is homeschooled, the parent(s) need to make sure that the child does have some regular social interactions with kids of their same age group.

I didn't have the patience to do it when my kids were little.  School provided the "break" that I needed.  If I had the patience then that I do now as a grandma, I would probably concider it.

I'm all for homeschooling even though my four children went to public school. The only fear I have is socialization. As long as the child has friends I think its a great idea!

homeschooling is good but it doesn't give your kids a chance to grow up around other kids they need friends. if you homeschool there is a higher risk of kids getting in more trouble.

Hi there and excuse me I could not help but notice your post, and its nice that you were happy with being home schooled I guess standard school was rough for you, am I right? were people rude to you if yes I understand I guess its not fun and being home schooled would be more appealing.

But I didnt care much at all for home schooling for many reasons. :( :)

I personally think that this day in time home school is the way to go if a family can do this. I also think that it is important to have plenty of opportunity for those that are home schooled to have friends. The support group thing was probably very helpful. I feel like the public school system is getting worse in a lot of areas and our children are the future.

and our children are the future.

EXACTLY! We have to teach them well and let them lead the way.  Show them all the beauty that they posses inside.  Give them a sense, of pride. To make it easier.

But what we should really do is... let the children's laughter remind of us of how we used to be.

Your right home schooling could be good if parents find ways for there kids to socialize and spend time with kids there own age, I dont think its always good for kids to be around adults all the time and in life and work they'll be around many differnt people not just family. :)

homeschooling can work only if it is being done for the right reasons and that the children have the support needed to succeed. i remember watching an episode of Super Nanny where the parents took their two oldest kids out of public school and had them homeschooled just so that they would be able to babysit their younger siblings while the parents were at work. They figured this would save them money from having to put them i daycare. The only problem was that the kids were too busy taking care of their brothers and the house leaving little time to focus on school work.
BAD IDEA!!!

Today there are many options for parents that choose to home school.  If your a parent considering homeschooling check with your local schools in many areas they offer online as well as traditional book curriculum which the student work with a certified teacher as well as there parent supervising to make sure the work is done.  I hear a lot of parents discussing the social aspect of school.  Many of these programs through our public schools offer extra curricular activities for our home schooled children to participate in just like they were going to a regular public school.  In my opinion school is supposed to be about learning not socializing and competition of who has the most expensive and fashionable outfit.  There are many activities for kids to socialize YMCA's, Sports, Etc.  I myself went to public school as well as my hubby, and we are both 100 percent sure were making the right decision in enrolling our daughter in our public schools digital academy where she will recieve the same curriculum that everyone else does with one on one attention from a licensed teacher as well as my full support to make sure the work gets done.  This might not be the right choice for every child, but for some people to judge and say that its wrong and parents are sheltering there kids is not always accurate.  For example our child has special needs that we feel are necessary to help her work through ourselves with the guidance and support of a teacher.  So if your a parent and are considering home school look into all your options I know before this digital academy was recommended to me by our daughters speech therapist I never knew it was even an option.

Way to go that you find a way to teach your child life.  Parents this day didn't even know where their children be.  Homes school can be good but need to go out more for them to learn how life out there.

As a recently married person, I don't prefer homeschooling due to few reasons:

1. Children should mingle with other people out of our rationality. At school, we can people from different countries, race, ethnicity which we can't find at our home.
2. Children learn more by observing things. Lively teaching will not be there at home.
3. To be become a team player minimum group of students is required. They can not learn co-operation until they are with the same age group people. And also they will learn fast due to peer competition.

I was never home schooled, so I don't know what it's like.  I think kids need to be in school making friends.  Me, maybe I would have liked to be home schooled because I was shy in school and in the end, sad to say, I graduated with like barely any friends.  My boyfriend took up all my time, but that's who's going to be there for me in the end anyways.  He is now my baby's daddy and our 4 year anniversary is coming up next month.

I think being homeschooled is a joke.  You don't have to keep the same pace as in real school. It's totally not fair.  Plus people who are homeschooled are socially undeveloped.  And once they start actual school, they'll probably give into peer pressure and mess up really badly.

;)  My personal opinion is "Homeschooling is great". Student-to-teacher ratio is much, much better than most of the schools and classroom settings. You need a knowlegable supervisor to check progress. Students can ask many questions and get very good answers.

Homeschooling can be great because the kids get so much extra attention. However, make sure they either participate in sports or spend time with friends because it's important that they learn social skills as well.

I agree that homeschooling can be beneficial since it's one of one attention. However, it seems like the information they kids may be learning are not applicable to the real world. My examples are a tad extreme but on E! there was this show called Pretty Wild and the mom home-schooled these girls. However, each lesson was based off of the book series The Secret (I think?). I've also seem other shows where the information the children are learning are not applicable. I know I'm going to the extreme but I've also seen first hand the people I know who were homeschooled are extremely intelligent but can sometimes lack social skills.

I an perfect world, our kids could get personized attention from teachers designed to fit their needs and advance them at their own pace or even super pace so they could excel but yet get all of the social interaction and diversity of the school system.  for many in our area, the public school is riddled with drugs, fights and other elements not so great so its not something you really want them in.  Another case of no perfect answer.  Whatever the case, do it for the kid!

for every person in favor of homeschooling there will be one that is against it. for me its one of those gray areas, i can see the benefit of it but i can also see where it may be detrimental as well. in my family's personal experience, my sister who was homeschooled for 2 years got in less trouble than when she was attending public school but she was far less social. she did well grade-wise because she could work at her own pace but there were some areas where she did not learn as much as she would have in a school environment. personally, i would not homeschool my kids because i feel they need the day to day interaction with the other students their own age and, although its selfish, i need them to go to school so they are out of the house so i can have some time to myself! :)
