Title: Money Saving Tricks
Post by: BK_Adores_Chase on August 01, 2010, 03:57:44 am
Does anyone have any odd but good ideas of how to save money?  I say that because I've already thought of and am doing the obvious things, so I need some other ideas.  And I mean - I am a huge penny pincher.  I am even starting to watch how much toilet paper I use - it's that bad.  I drink water, no pop.  I'm eating hot dogs and spaghetti.  I need something more...

I just made my own laundry detergent, and it works better than anything I have ever bought at the store, and SO MUCH CHEAPER. I am just sick of all the money I wasted before. I sued the Fels Naptha Laundry bar soap, Washing Soda, and 20 mule team borax. Just google Homemade Laundry detergent. You will find several recipes.

I made over a thousand dollars totally FREE last year from banks. I simply took advantage of their FREE checking account promotion bonus. Just got my 2nd $100 from Bank of America last Friday. Took that $100 out and am opening 2 more accounts with different banks. Wainwright Bank is offering a $200 savings bond.

I only have one bank that I use. These others are just for the FREE money. I read their offer and requirements and do exactly what they ask. I set up a file and run it like a business.

Never waste money on fabric softner. I don't need the chemicals that is in it, and my clothes are soft when I dry them in the dryer. I begin to take them out and fold or hang them just as they begin to get dry. NEVER LET THEM SIT THERE IN THE DRYER AFTER IT HAS FINISHED .

Me and 4 of my  single, senior friends/neighbors had a supper club. One night a week, one member would cook  and serve supper for everyone. That way you only had took one night per week, but we all got a home coked meal every night. Plus we had a good time.

On the weekends some of us would go out to eat with a Buy One/ Get One FREE coupon. We would also do lunch sometimes during the week like that.

They have all passed away now, and I miss them so very much.

I buy the big size of White Vinegar and always have a box of Baking Soda ( or recycle the old one from the fridge )
Vinegar added to the rinse cycle instead of fabric softener. To clean windows/mirrors, especially good in the car to remove the film from smoke. Removes rust stains. Soak my shower head to unclog it. Vinegar and baking soda to keep the drains running good. Baking soda for odor in the carpet. If you google it you'll find all sorts of things.
Also, a little fabric softener ( cheap kind from the dollar store ) mixed with water in a spray bottle instead of something like frebreeze...it not only freshens the air but it removes the static.

Beans are one of the healthiest  and cheapest foods you can eat, BUT many people don't eat them because they cause so much gas. Always wash them then soak them overnight in cool water and just a pinch of baking soda. Drain, Rinse and cook without salt. This takes out most of the gas.

Blackeyed peas do not cause gas, and are so cheap and healthy and very tasty..

Cut back on services that you do not need or that you can do yourself.  Cut back on your cable bill also, I should have done this years ago.  I save $40.00 a month by using the family tier of programing.  I miss some of the channels, but there is still tons to watch.

These are some really great tips. I use coupons when I am shopping. Most of the time I go for the off brand product. Sometimes thou you just gotta buy the name brand. I wont buy kroger mac and cheese. It might be me but i cant get it too cook right so we always buy kraft. sometimes you have to spend a little more for taste.

I grow a garden and can and freeze a lot of vegetables from the summer to use all winter. You can really save some money. I also go to farmers market and buy in bulk there too. I got about 25 extra large onions for $8 instead of buying them 2 for $1. I can so I use a lot of onions. 3 quarts of salsa  needs 5 cups chopped onions.

I see threads like this on lots of forums and it always makes me grin.  ;D

My feelings are just the opposite, I think spending money is FUN and there is no way I am going to pinch pennies.

When people in the United States have so many websites to earn from for free, why not just make more?

Sure you need to learn how to get referrals (that's the key), but I think it was worth it! Not only here on Fusioncash, I have signed up TENS OF THOUSANDS of people for various programs since I started and it gets easier every day.

I know someone is going to respond with, "Give us some tips", so here comes the best one before you even ask ;

YOUTUBE!  :notworthy:

Learn to use it and you will never look back. I can't even remember what it was like when I started using it, but it's sure sweet now.

Well my outlook on life sometimes is "Hey, if I die tomorrow at least I know I enjoyed a root beer" (I don't buy pop anymore - part of saving those pennies.  But when those bills come and I can't pay, or a week goes by when I can't buy food for my son I feel like s**t

I have a few good ideas to try

You can use a mixture of baking soda and lemon juice to clean just about anything

look on computer sites for people giving away free stuff and go get it and have a yard sale

go to the supermarket early in the morning during the week and look for the specials on meets.  I can usually get stuff for like two or three dollars off  it really helps

I've been looking for things to do for my hair wthout spending lots of money at salons so far I found:
**The cheap girls deep conditioning treatment: Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo, saturate your hair with your condtioner- I use Dove Intensve repair- Put on a shower cap, or if you don't have one, pile hair up ad wrap with plastic wrap; wrap your head with a hot towel and leave on from 20 mins- 1hour, changing towel as needed. Then rinse! Do about once a week. I also saw some things about using mayonaise on your hair which I'll be checking out this week. The things we gals will do for good hair :dontknow:

There are some great ideas out here that I might just have to try! I found a great site called AllYou. It's full of great money saving ideas and every day they give you a link to get something for free. I have gotten multiple things of shampoo / conditioner, treats for my dogs, plus some other freebies off that site and all it cost was my time to fill out the submission form. It also has some great tips on how you can save money on different occasions. A big one this time of the year is how to save money on the whole "back to school" situation if that applies to you.

Coupons are also you friend! I know people who will only buy things if they have a coupon for it!

Ok I just found a website that does discount restaurant gift certificates...and before anyone starts jumping up and down, hollering about forum rules-- they do not have any referal bonus and I'm not posting a link...this is just a helpful tip from one penny-pincher to another-- It's called restaurant.com and you can get,say a $25 gift certificate for $10...there's always a minimum purchase amount like $35 but still you can't beat that! Also if you signup for "likelist" (Google it) they send you $25 certificate code for free! I just got mine in my inbox and got my certificates.

Here's a couple:

If you have Craigslist in your area, that's a good place to get items you may need (like garage sales).

Use less laundry detergent, especially if the washer is newer (not talking the high efficiency ones either).  Read an article online that says most people use too much detergent, so try using a little less than normal.  Also the earlier tip on washing in cold water too (if you pay for heat and/or water).

If you have direct deposit, and do online banking (with checking and savings account), setup an automatic transfer to move some money into your savings account - then when you write your paycheck in your checkbook, only write the amount less what is being transferred.  That way you'll be less inclined to spend it.  Easy way to start that is if you ever get a raise (seems rarer these days), whatever the increase is, move that to savings, and stay living on your same budget.  That worked wonders for me to build a nice cushion.

On similar lines to the auto-savings transfer, pay yourself an allowance for "fun" stuff.  Go to an ATM and withdraw your spending money.  Try to use that when you go out, and when it's spent, you wait until your next paycheck.

This is a big one for me-I unplug all the electronics that I am not using all the time.  Like when I'm at work or overnight, I have my TV's on a powerswitch and I turn that off.  I use the microwave for 30 seconds a day-the rest of the time it's just on and wasting energy so I unplug that.  i do it with everything that I don't use all the time (alarm clocks in guest bedroom, cell phone charger, etc).  My electricity bill went down by 50% when I started doing that!  Some of those things just drain energy.

I am making most of my Christmas gifts by crocheting but even for people that aren't crafty there are things you can make.  A friend and I are going today to gather birch shavings, the peels that fall from the birch trees, and we will stick these, or glue or wire, into a styrofoam wreath form, tie a ribbon to the top and have a beautiful homemade wreath.

If we can find a good size birch limb we will cut those and make small candle holders too.

Turn off the television. One big way to save money is to watch less television. There are a lot of financial benefits to this: less exposure to guilt-inducing ads, more time to focus on other things in life, less electrical use, and so on. It’s great to unwind in the evening, but seek another hobby to do that.

Sign up for every free customer rewards program you can. Even if you rarely shop at that place, having a rewards card for that place will eventually net you some coupons and discounts. Here’s the basic game plan for maximizing these programs: create a Gmail address just for these mailings, collect every card you can, and then check that account for extra coupons whenever you’re ready to shop.

. Master the thirty day rule. Whenever you’re considering making an unnecessary purchase, wait thirty days and then ask yourself if you still want that item. Quite often, you’ll find that the urge to buy has passed and you’ll have saved yourself some money by simply waiting. If you want, you can even keep a “thirty day list” where you write down the item and the day you’ll reconsider it, but I prefer just to keep this one in my head – that way, I often just forget about the unimportant things.

Instead of throwing out some damaged clothing, repair it instead. Don’t toss out a shirt because of a broken button – sew a new one on with some closely-matched thread. Don’t toss out pants because of a hole in them – put in a patch of some sort and save them for times when you’re working around the house. Simple sewing can be done by anyone – it just takes a few minutes and it saves a lot of money by keeping you from buying new clothes when you don’t really need to.

Don’t spend big money entertaining your children. Most children, especially young ones, can be entertained very cheaply. Buy them an end roll of newspaper from your local paper and let their creativity run wild. Make a game out of ordinary stuff around the house, like tossing pennies into a jar, even. Realize that what your children want most of all is your time, not your stuff, and you’ll find money in your pocket and joy in your heart.

Drink Lipton Tea instead of soda. Use one bag per teapot. Save unused portion for iced tea. Eat bean soup flavored with cumin, garlic powder, onion, chili and salt instead of hot dogs. Freeze what you don't eat for some quick meals. Pick your rosemary, bay, garlic chives, dandelion greens, mustard greens, mallow, etc. from plants growing in vacant lots or parks (or someone's landscaping, if you get up early. They won't notice.) Buy your potatoes by the bag, and get a whole chicken only when it's on sale for .69/.79/lb. Make gravy from the drippings and giblets, and soup from the carcass after you've roasted it. You CAN eat well on a very small budget!!!! Good Luck!!!!

Awesome ideas, everyone.  Home-made laundry detergent. Wow.  I bet the possibilities are endless.  Also, witch hazel is a cheap aternative to astringents and my mother in law swears by it.  She has gorgeous skin for her age by the way.

i don't know if this one has been posted yet, but Ladies, use conditioner to shave your legs instead of shaving cream.  If you get the cheap kind, it lasts longer than shaving cream, works better (in my opinion) and costs soooooo much less.

Use products that you buy from the Dollar Store. Use newspaper to wrap gifts in.
