Title: Leaving the Computer On
Post by: BK_Adores_Chase on August 04, 2010, 07:54:07 am
My son likes to watch Nick Jr. online but he will watch it for like 20 minutes, then play for 45 minutes, then he will want to watch Nick Jr. again.  Should I turn the computer off for those 45 minutes to save energy/money or just leave it on sleep mode or something?

We can leave our computers in hibernate mode

they say it is not good to turn the computer on and off again.  Once ours is on we leave it on for the rest of the day.

My computer is on 24/7 even when I am on vacation away from home. Turning it on and off stresses the components as they cool and heat and the power saved would be like a 100 Watt light bulb. Beside s, I use remote control to use my home computer from my laptop while I am away.

I have been leaving my computer on 24/7. But, the other day, my CPU fan clogged with dust and nuked my duo core Intel, so now, I am running an old AMD and mainboard. So, I would suggest using a can of compressed air to blow dust out of your CPU fan periodically.

I leave my computer on all day and just shut of f the monitor to save power.  I never know when I will want to jump on Fusion Cash and check to see if Kohler is having a promo. :bootyshake:

You definitely do not want to be turning the computer on / off all the time. It hurts not only the motherboard, but also the battery life of the computer (if it's a laptop) greatly diminishes. I would recommend putting it into a low hibernation state, you won't save that much energy / money just by turning off the computer for 45 minutes.

That had me quacking up!! Good one!!

I too leave my computer on 24/7, it automatically goes into sleep mode after like 15 minutes or so of non use.

I leave mine on and let it go to sleep when I'm not using it...but a word of warning if you have a webcam: people can remotely access it if they know what they're doing so turn it off when you're not using it, and as an extra measure, turn it to a wall...just the thought of someone spying on you or your kids....

I leave my computer on all day and turn it off when I go to sleep. And I do that 'cause my room is the warmest room in the house and especially with it being summer my computer overheats.

I turn it off when I'm not using it.   I heard that leaving it plugged in 24/7 isn't good.

I turn mine off every night unless its running a defrag or something like that, that's going to take a long time to do.  I use this computer for my work and I always turn it off when I'm done using it.  Especially if a thunderstorm hits can't take a chance on losing my hard drive info or anything else with this baby. I turn it off and unplug if a bad storm. My first computer lasted 7 years doing the same thing over and over so I'm not sure on that or not.   :cat:

I only turn  my laptop off at night when I go to bed.  If I have to run out and do something it will time out after a while and go into sleep mode or I will put in in sleep mode.

;)    If I am not mistaken: Sleep mode and hibernate are the same thing. Both are the best options because when you come back your programs are still there. Never turn your off your computer without clicking on 'sleep mode or hibernate'...because you may lose some important data.

I leave my computer on most of the time but in hibernate while not in use.  Probably 2 or 3 nights a week I actually turn it off for the night.  I do shut it down on Sunday morning because we are gone all day and get home too late to do anything so  I give my computer a little break.

well u would think it would save energy but it really isnt. if u turn ur computer off and on all the time it will be hard on the hard drive or whatever and it will take more power to turn on then to turn it off. u can leave it on just put it in sleep mode.

i have never heard of this. does this also apply to the webcam that is built into my laptop. honestly, i don't even know how to use it but the thought of someone being to see what i am doing is totally creepy

I recommend shutting it down while you sleep at least once every 72 hours to get a fresh boot, however just for the Nick JR portion of the question...let the screen saver turn on and he move the mouse when he's ready. Corporation managers do the same thing daily...only they are meetings and not playing. I hope ;)

it may be good enough to leave it on then let him finish. once he's done again then if your done for the day you can turn it off - you dont want it to crash when you need it most. on and off again takes a while and has to load the programs over and over.

You really should leave the computer on 24/6 (doing a reboot or shutting it down once a week). Turning on and off the computer causes undue stress on components (esp. hard-drives which causes the most headache for people to lose!). Even overnight, the computer should be put into Sleep (aka Standby) or Hibernation mode, not turned off esp. if you are going to be turning it on the next day. It's sort of like a car: driving in the city with a lot of stop-and-go traffic is harder on the car and causes worse fuel efficiency than does driving at a constant speed along the highway. Some of the newer computers are very energy efficient now. They allow you to specify exactly what you want powered down and after how much time of inactivity (so I can have it switch to screen saver after 10 minutes of inactivity, turn off the monitor after 20 minutes., power down the hard-drives after 3 hours, etc.).

The difference between Sleep and Hibernate is that Hibernate mode will turn off more components and uses less power than Sleep mode. With both modes, all non-essential components are turned off (usually the monitor and other components like external hard-drives, web-cams, and some printers). In sleep mode, all data that resides on RAM will still reside there, and so some power needs to go into your RAM memory to maintain the current state of the computer. In Hibernation mode, however, all data residing in RAM gets stored onto the hard-drive. Thus it will take a little more time to wake-up a computer from Hibernation since it need to reload the RAM from the data stored on the hard drive. The Hibernating computer may still use some power, mostly to sense when the user wants to wake the computer up, but more components are able to power down in Hibernating mode, including the RAM and hard-drives. Also, a computer in Hibernation mode that has power disrupted can still reboot into the last state it was in, whereas in Sleep mode if power is disrupted, everything in RAM is lost and so the computer needs to reboot like normal (thus laptops that are not plugged in should be set to Hibernate instead of Sleep mode in case the battery dies before the unit can be plugged in again). Depending on the configuration, some computers will turn off network connections in either mode while others will only turn them off if in Hibernation mode to allow background transfers to occur in Sleep mode (eg anti-virus updates, etc.). Also different services may be kept running or turned off depending on how the Sleep mode is configured; most Server operating systems (eg Windows Server 2008) keeps all services running and network connections open since the server is usually not actively being used directly by an administrator, but rather indirectly by client computers which need the services and network running but not extraneous components like monitors etc.

There are a few things to be cautious about when setting computers to Sleep and / or Hibernation mode. Because both states keep the same state of memory between sessions, it is a good idea to reboot and / or shut-down the computer at least once a week. This will clear out the memory in case there are any lingering memory leaks from poorly written applications (esp. for the old version of Solitaire on Win 98 machines (I'm not sure about XP....)). Also, when saving the data to hard-drive in Hibernation mode will use any hard-drive space it finds instead of contiguous segments. Thus the hard-drive files will become more fragmented as a result of Hibernating the computer. So you should run the defragmentation application every few months to keep your hard-drive running at optimal speeds. Finally both modes keep an active power supply running so unless the system is plugged into some type of power surge protector, the computer should be turned off and unplugged (including any Ethernet cables plugged into it) during electrical storms (also disconnect cable / phone lines going into any modems to protect those as well).

Please leave it on.  It takes more energy to turn it on and off all of the time.

My computer is usually on 24/7 except when I am away on vacation.

Most of my computer maintenance is set to run when I am at work.

I belong in the leave it on camp. I have run pc's for years 24/7 except for the occasional reboot / restart. I've burned up 3. One bios, one cpu, one mystery.

I thought it's better for your computer to turn it off to give it a break? I know leaving it on contributes to environmental problems.

My comp usually stays on all day and the nights I run malwarebytes. If I am not at the comp or close by when it is on my kitten likes to get on it. Some of the sites she visits are some thing else though  hehe even have her typing to people if I have a chat room up lol just can not understand what she says lol

Well there are some things to also consider in this as well. Yes leaving your computer on all the time is much better than off and on periodically throughout the day, however; if you're going to go this route, you need to ensure that you are plugged into a grounded surge protector. Not a power strip, a real surge protector. Brownouts happen periodically especially during the hot summer months and could potentially surge your machine risking you component loss.

Also, if you're away from your home and a storm comes, you're safegaurding your machine if the house experiences other power issues.

But yes, leaving it on is much better for it. I would recommend though removing your battery from time to time if it's a laptop so it's not constantly charging it. Batteries can die if left in constant power charge mode.

I leave my on 24/7...I only turn if off if I'm leaving the house for a couple of days or if it's running slow. It's just easier to get on it when you want instead of waiting to sign in and out.
