I have a lot of acquaintances, I'm not that old but over the years it seems friends have come and gone, some stayed for awhile others not.  At the end of the day the people who matter to me the most and I consider friends are my family.

There is a Dolly Parton song "You chose your lovers, you pick your friends but not the family that you're in no, they'll be with you til the end cause it's family".  I am fortunate enough to have a large family that has zero drama; 4 generations (my grandma has 11 brothers/sisters, then there's their kids - my moms generation, then my generation and then my sons) we don't go by the first cousin/second cousin etc rule, family is family, they're the best link to your past and will be there in the future.

I have known alot of people in my life time but I can't truely call hardly any true friends.
Now that I'm 29 years old I have come to understand who where and who still are my true friends, I can call out only two people so
far and a couple of more that are there for me at times but are not true all the way.
So only two so far are true friends and I've been friends with them for a long time and as a matter of fact one one them is my
childhood friend.
I have learned in life that not everyone claiming to be your friend is your friend and most people you are better without
anyways. I had to let go of alot of people claiming to be my friends because some have used me and others were just all about themselves wich is all the
same.  Now I enjoy spending time with people I trust and not give some much of myself but keep it equal.

Depends on how you define a friend, really. A lot of people like to equate their "friends" with people they've frantically added on Facebook to fill their popularity quota. I read an article in a magazine which basically outlined a study done at one of the Ivy League universities on social media and psychology; how the average person could only recall 150 people at a time.  I used to have hundreds of dozens of people on my list until one of those people did me wrong, and I just went on a rampage and deleted everyone I hardly ever talked to. Felt great when I was done. It's a very purifying experience.

Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent, but I don't have anyone I could truly call a friend. My boyfriend and my close family members are the only friends I need. The rest are just classmates, co-workers and acquaintances. You'll find over time that the latter are expendable, when you show signs of personal growth, move on and find people to fill their places.  Don't let them and their petty drama hold you back from going forward.

There are 5 or 6 people that I would call my friends. Of those, 3 of them I would call true or close friends and I have several acquaintances that call themselves my friends, but I know better.  ;)
