As a teacher I think that school should be 5 days a week. It is hard enough to get in all the material that we are to teach in the normal 5 day week, it would be impossible to get it in if we went to 4 day weeks.

If it is due to state budget constraint, then maybe they should prolong the hours in school with a few added hours a day to make up the normal 5 days/week schedule. Don’t know if that can be possible.  :dontknow: Since you asked, what do you think about it?  :)

NO WAY...kids need 5 days a week!  Before we moved on post to military housing our children used to attend public schools...they learned A LOT and were excited about learning!  Since we have moved here on post our kids attend school 5 days per week, but EVERY Wednesday they have a half of a day...not to mention ANYTIME there is a holiday or reason to have a day off, they close school...I have seen a HUGE difference in my children and will be putting them back in public schools next year, even if I have to drive them myselfs...Education is SO important these days!!!!

It would be really hard on working families that can't afford daycare.

I'm a grandmother of 4  and I really think they shoud not change to 4 days a week, they have to cram too much as it is, don't forget that some college kids have commited suicide because of the pressure.
Kids don't have it any easier now, their curriculum is jam packed so why make it more difficult?

It would be really hard on working families that can't afford daycare.

What do these families do in the summers then?

Last I checked, public schools aren't childcare centers.  They're educational institutions.  Somewhere along the way, families got this notion that schools were there to watch their kids all day so they could go work.  While some people have circumstances after having children which force them to work long and/or crazy hours (due to medical bills, loss of a previous job, divorce, etc), many parents have the same jobs they had before having kids.  If they weren't prepared for the costs associated with having children, the fact kids will get sick and need to stay home occasionally (which in turn means THEY need to stay home and use sick/personal days, and not send their kid to school sick so they can save them for a vacation), the fact schools are there for education and not childcare, amongst others, they never should have had kids in the first place.  If both parents are working before having the kids, they need to be prepared to make a sacrifice.  Either they need to realize they are going to have to pony up for childcare if they want to keep their same careers, or one needs to put their career on hold until their child is older if they can't somehow work out the hours to accomodate when they aren't at school if childcare is prohibitive.  Parents are supposed to raise their kids... not teachers, childcare workers, babysitters, friends...

As for 4 days or 5 days?  If the 4 days also means making each day longer to make up for the lost 5th day, it is a horrible idea.  For younger kids, the school day is already long enough.  If schools wanted to go year-round, I think 4 days would be a very good way of breaking up the year for the kids.  Otherwise, I'd think you'd have to have pretty much a week off every 5-6 weeks or so if they were going 5 days still.

Why would you go to 4 days a week?  I don't see any rationale for that.  I don't think children get the education they need anyway, so why take away time for that?  Lengthing the days to make up the time is too hard, especially on the younger children.  My daughter is in second grade, goes to school from 8-2:50, has lunch at 10:30 and is starving when we get home at 3.  There's no way she is learning anything until she eats again.

I am not sure of US but in my place, it used to 5.5 days a week. so last half day is very nice. The last day all the people used to engage in playing and hiking etc. Lots of fun in my childhood days.

If Schooldays are reduced, then children need be maintained by the parents. So, necessarily the parents office should also have 4 days a week.

i dont know if you have kids or not but i agree with the whole concept parents should raise ther kids and not others but also these days it takes a village to raise kiddos caus lets face it unless you shelter your kids from EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE your not the only role model for them schools do ther job as much as they can, what the whole daycare is about is that the school yr is way longer than summer break and its easier to find a private babysitter for two months than it is to pay daycare expense for ten months especialy if you are paying for more than one child as a mom of 5 its easier for my husband to work and me to stay home my youngest is 3 and my oldest just turned 18 and she graduates in may and i wouldnt change not a second of it not EVER

Why reduce the days.  Our kids are already behind the education offered in some other countries.  Do we want it to be worse?  The days are long enough for the kids - I wouldn't think of lenthinging them.

The 5.5 days sounds good but I don't have kids so it makes no dif to me at all. If I had kids in school it might make it harder in terms of after-school arrangements.

No I think reducing the number of school days from 5 to 4 would be a bad idea especially for the parents who would have no choice but to face a couple of chioces like a day care or quit a job.  Neither of which would be good chioces in this environment.

I believe school days should be align to parents work days.  Besides we are preparing our children for the future.  So in a strange way it prepares them for how long a work week is and a parents benefit is that they could be relieve to know where the children are while they are working.

No to 4 days a week for school everytime you turn around they out around here.  They do not go enough to retain what they are learning now.  Kids need repition to learn.

I don't think school should be reduced, but I also don't think it should be increased. I don't know about you guys, but after 7 hours of school everyday, I was exhausted and drowsy once I got home. Kids need at least a couple days a week to refresh and get some rest.

I think school days can continue to be 5 days/week.  However, the start of the day needs to be shortened from 7:30 to 9 pm.  Children wake up entirely too early these days for school and it shows.  Most of them are so tired that once they battle to stay awake during school they come home and nap for 2-4 hours!  If school days started later, the would get a better sleep at night and be fresher not only in the morning but also during school.  This would most likely lend itself to improved learning and retention by our students.

They need to stay at 5 days a week.  The kids get tired enough as it is without adding two more hours to their day.  I think their learning would certainly suffer.  We are already behind some other nations and don't need to get further behind.

5 days of school are great because it's just preparing the kids for the real world when they grow up. Most of us adults have jobs of 5 to 6 days a week.

Thats a good question. I think it depends on how well and efficiently the the education system delivers the goods. I don't think it would be a problem for the students. Children adjust very well to change.

I remember working 4 days a week (4 days @ 10 hours a day).  It was difficult for me at times as an adult.  I can see the kids not being able to hold their attention span that long.  Especially the little ones as someone pointed out before.  We already have a surplus of latch key kids who let themselves into their house without mom or dad present.  So...giving them another day to be alone every week is not the answer.  I understand in this day and age, both parents work, but it definitely has a cost.

My heart goes out to those women that are single moms just trying to make ends meet.  While she did have a home and a husband at one time, having children was natural to having a family.  She didn't sit down and think "now someday I may not have my husband, so I better not have any kids".  This woman is raising her children now with an absentee father and must work.  While she may not view the school as her private baby sitting service, she certainly is grateful she has the time to work and make a living.  Trying to get child care for an extra week more a month would be a hit to her budget in more ways than one.

No. I don't think 28 hours or so is enough time for the kids to learn everythingthey need to know about in a school year.  If anything, I think they need more days .  I wouldn't wish that on any of them, but they really don't need less than 5 days.

No, i don't believe the school week should be reduced...5 days is adequate and I don't think that it would solve anything...tbh I think it would promote laziness more than anything. However, that does not mean I don't think the school systems are a bit out of whack lol.

IMO all schools should be put on a block schedule. I really don't think that reducing the school week will fix anything. I think the main problem is education boards are too focused on teaching things that really aren't necessary. Children need life skills and values...they need to have fun with their curriculum and the way schools run i feel creates way too much stress. I feel theres a time and a place for certain subjects and requirements of kids and young adults. I feel that kids are being robbed of very vital lessons and that school boards are focused on the wrong things.

If you're not familiar with block schedule, basically what it means is kids take certain classes on certain days..they don't take the same subject everyday (they put this in my school after I graduated...go figure). I feel that classes are too rushed and they try to cram all this info into students heads then send them home with loads of homework cause they didn't finish it in school lol. I don't like homework..it should only be given over certain times, for example kids get a couple weeks off from school, give them some sort of assignment over that break so they can keep their minds goin...but this daily homework thing is crazy. sometimes kids come home and end up working more then getting relaxation time, they have dinner, go to bed around 9 then back to the same routine...its no wonder that kids get so burned out. I've seen kids literally in tears over the amount of work and studying that is required..and these are little kids, at one time they even had a no backpack rule (you had to get the ones on wheels) because of the weight of the books pose a potential risk of back injury...do you really need to send a kid home with that much stuff? :o I think if teachers had more time to focus on a particular subject at one time, students would better understand the material, they would respond better, and not feel rushed...They could get accomplished what they need to and do it all at school, where it should be. Getting to a higher grade lvl of course is a bit different, when I speak of this overworked stressful environment, I'm referring more to the younger kids. Once in high school I do believe that a higher expectation of students is required, they are afterall preparing to face the world and college. I do still think that even on this level a lot of reassessment of curriculum is required.

I think that our youth are already suffering enough with cuts to education. How are we going to continue to have doctors, scientists, and (gasp) teachers if we never educate anyone. Might as well give up now, turn off public utilities, and build stilts for our huts.

Mainly in high school because the so called teachers at the high school I went to got there teaching jobs based on there abilities to coach sports, not on teaching

School should remain five days a week, especially for those parents who wont be able to afford day care. I also think all schools in the USA should run on the same vacation schedule. And I also agree with the block schedule because with a regular 7 class schedule kids get too much homework and not enough time to understand what they are learning.

Absolutely not, kids being out of school, would mean boredom, which would mean looking for things to do, their minds are very influential at this age, and that is why they should be filled with learning, not out on the streets learning all the junk that is out there, but learning healthy stuff. This would be a serious mistake, oh and you would also have to give parents a day off of work, since most the school is their babysitter.

Only if we had waaay less breaks. And even then it could make things difficult for parents who work 5 days a week.

In other countries the children are smarter than ours because they are put through more schooling, so I'm confused if you're trying to suggest that our children should be put through less.

Kids are overworked as far as school goes. I think 1 less day of school per week would actually help them learn better & want to go to school more. I know my son is exhausted by the weekend & a lot of the time he has homework over the weekend. Too much just burns them out & makes them hate school.

Keeping school days at 5 days a week is the best option. Sure 4 day a week school schedule would help the school districts save money but in the long run i believe it will hurt the students. you are cutting down time to teach the students. so unless we are goinng to add an extra 2 hours to eacch school day then we need to keep 5 day school weeks.

I think today more than ever given the challenging state of our economy and just living status, children need and will depend on their educations. It is so difficult to get in all the material needed to teach now with 5 days,so my vote is keeping it 5 days a week and even using an after school program or some kind of resource to help extend or making learning fun so that the children do not even know they're learning!!

I definitely think they should keep it at 5 days. When kids are Jr and Sr in high school and have passing grades they can usually get more flexible classes that require more research and work outside the classroom. I don't think a 4 day week is a good idea because if they miss days they would miss too much.

poor teachers & students - will be brain dead with 10 or 11 hours a day in school. need lots of breaks and gym? plus poor working parents that will have to worry about that day they are not in school... I like the 5 days. but my children are all grown with children of their own.

It is not the amount of school days that is in question. It is the quality of education all around. The No Child Left Behind act has pushed teachers into "teaching" the test and skipping the basics. If I felt my children were getting a well rounded education, then I wouldnt mind a four day school week. Because of the current state of the public education system, I home school my children. Its up to me to see to it that they are progressing with skills they need and not being "groomed" for standardized tests that prove nothing.

Having workede with children for over ten years and having a child of my own, I would have to say that cutting the days back would not be good for the children to keep up with all that is needed for the children to learn what is needed in a year.  I have to say that I think that they do need to do something with the schools to make it more children and family based.   All children don't learn the same way so if we were to work at a 4 day a week schedule then maybe there needs to be something else in the 5 days for the children to learn some basics that they maybe lossing out on in the time school is going.  Maybe put some of the arts back into the school system so all children get a chance to learn what they should.  Were my son goes to school he has two or three weeks of academics and then he has two or three weeks of tech classes, so that when he is finished with school he has an education and a skill maybe we need to look in these areas.

Nah I'd just stick with 5 days of school, because it really is hard to catch up if you miss just one class and having 4 days of school in highschool not a good idea.

No. No. No.  Kids already have too much free time.  Imagine how much trouble they will get in with an extra day off.

I don't think so.
My BFF only goes 3 days a week (its a private school) and she really doesn't understand the material. Also, she gets double the homework. It really doesn't work well since you really can't learn a lot.  ;)

No, I really think they need 5 days, because a teacher have hard enough time trying to teach all that is required in 5 days.  Something needs to be done if they do this.  I am a grandmother and I would hate to see my grandchildren days cut. :'(

I don't think school should be reduced, but I also don't think it should be increased. I don't know about you guys, but after 7 hours of school everyday, I was exhausted and drowsy once I got home. Kids need at least a couple days a week to refresh and get some rest.

This is the best answer, by far.   School was so exhausting growing up, then there was the cliche's (popular kids), bullies, mean teachers (some good ones too), getting mixed up with the wrong crowd, and having to deal with so many other issues.

I'm in favor of home schooling all the way.  Less pressure, no bullies.  I know that's impossible for some because of work, but like us, if you work at home, then it would be feasible.

Our own children had to go thru the same crap that we did.

I knew of one family that home schooled their children.  Those kids were the best behaved children that I've ever seen.  The mother worked at home and stayed home with them.

I feel you should have school five days a week because if it is reduced y ewthan you don't learn everything that you could. If the were shortened they would have to have school days much longer. Personally I just feel its easier to keep it the way its been for years its much easier that way.

If the gas prices continue to rise, they may not have an option in order to stay open.  In my area which is 95% +/- rural, many children live way out in the county and our system has to operate many buses already.  If more funds have to buy gasoline, the cuts will have to be made somewhere.

Since we have moved here on post our kids attend school 5 days per week, but EVERY Wednesday they have a half of a day...not to mention ANYTIME there is a holiday or reason to have a day off, they close school.

where i live the public schools have seriously cut down hours this school year. my son goes to school from 9am to 3pm monday tuesday thursday and friday and on wednesdays he goes from 9am to 140pm. then the 2nd friday of every month is off for staff day/inservice and then the last monday of every month is a furlough day. my son gets a whole week off for thanksgiving, 3 weeks for christmas, and a week for spring break. school starts the last week in august and gets out the 3rd week in may. luckily my son is a great student and this has not affected his grades/development but i have seen how it has affected other kids in our neighborhood and it is such a shame the the education system is honestly failing our children.

Well I personally think that they should add a extra hour or so on the school day and make it 4 days just for the fact that i can not afford to drive them back and force every day with the gas now 4.17 a gallon and raising. They woud still get the same amount of hours per week but saves gas for the buses (schools) and us parents :) and makes kids happy they have a 3 day weekend ever week win win situation.

I love the fact that my kids are in school 5 days a week but it does make it hard to do fun things some times.  I did however, love the school schedule while we were in Hawaii.

They consider it year round school.  This really is not the case.  Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fri the kids went normal days from 8-3.  Wed they went from 8-1.  They had 2 weeks off for Spring break, a month for winter break (Christmas) and about 2 months for Summer break.  It all equaled out in the end to the same as normal school but less stress for both parents and kids.

I think it should be left to 5 days if possible and if they have to lengthen them not more than about 20 to 30 minutes. My grand daughter is in Kindergarten and doing real well but I think the full days of school take a lot out of these little ones even when they really enjoy going like she does.
As for parents considering the schools to be daycare I don't know any that actually do. They have to work and have to make plans for working around their children's education.

reduced school days? why so they can get dumber? it should be 5 days a week 10 hour days and no summer vacations

I agree with PMZ908 the kids are getting dumber & dumber & bcome less prepared for college & the work force. I think, kids today should go to school 7 days a week & school should be year round with short holiday breaks in between not summer vacation. I think that summer vacation is  a waste of time. Without reviewing, practicing what they were suppose to learn during the fall semester. They usually forget all they have learned when summer begins.
Sad, Asian kids parents start the learning process from the womb on wards. You wonder why Asian & foreign kids top the grade scale & have learned 5 to 6 different languages fluently under their belts b/4 leaving middle school.  Coupled with a strict routine daily life. Go to class, Do home work, do chores, help in the kitchen. After dinner go back review prepared  class notes. Get clothes ready for next day.  Go to sleep. Strict rules on their kids. No, dating, no parties, games......until they graduate college.

Mistakes that rippled through out the education system. : Leave no child behind just made it sure for the kid w/the barely passing grade a boost up. This didn't help him go into the new world successfully. Teacher w/little to now experience in the subject. Teachers that reuse old teaching materials.
Today, we are still losing the education battle on our kids now b/c not enough time in the year to really teach school kids the basic backgrounds they need to compete with other foreign school children.

I believe it all depends.. If the school days are longer then yes or if the school days are shorter or stay the same than no. I believe that children need to learn and go to school.. We have all been there and done that (Well most of us have anyways) and in my opinion it is very important. Some children think "Yea as if I am ever going to use this in life" and they are probably most likely right but from everything that I have learnt from school I believe I have used more than not in life.

I think that we, as a society, are losing touch with our families.  If it takes working a little harder Monday thru Thursday so that we can spend an intact three day weekend with our family I am all for it.  Sweden does it and has less incidence of depression, crime and murder. I think that it would be better for our economy because if we are able to spend more time with our family we are, most likely, going to be sppending more money.

I think if schools can go to 4 days a week and kids still learn, then I agree with 4 days a week. Of course that wouldn't help the teacher's if their pay is reduced too. If the 4 day's a week help's the school stay and teacher's still have a job then I would say 4 day's a week would help.

There is a high school here in arizona its 4 days a week. They have longer class time shorter semsters you earn more credits faster. The teachers are wonderful and have a genuine interest in the students knowledge.  If u miss anytime whatso ever you're supposed to make it up either during the week or Fridays. This school is misjudged a lot out here it is an alternative school (mess up kids) is what people think when they hear it. But I graduated and actually learned a lot. The aims scores this school gets are one of the highest in the valley. It teaches real values and teaches you about the real world andall of the other textbook things school is meant for. I wish all high school were more like this one

The original idea of schools educating children was to be sure that they are prepared for life. Part of being prepared for life is knowing what a normal workweek feels like. Children learn to prepare for this by going to school. I also feel another good reason to keep a 5 day week is that school age children have school & after school programs, which helps working parents who cannot afford daycare. I do not, however, care for the idea of year round schooling. There are many divorced parents who are only able to have their children during summer vacations. It would not be a good thing for the children to go to school year round & be unable to see their absent parent. Plus children do not handle stress as well as adults so they need this time to de-stress.

With the high fuel prices and cost of transportation, I think that is an excellent idea. Schools should edit some of their courses and use better textbooks. Classes should be four days a week with extended hours. The fifth day should be used for other activities if the student can afford it.

School days for 4 days a week would be ok, if the curriculum is also modified. Without that, it would be too much of lessons for kids to cope up. As such kids in middle school hardly get 7 hrs of shut eye each night, so if it is 4 days a week then it would be both good and bad for the kids, because they get one more free day during the week, and will be burdened for the other 4 days.

I think that both school and work should be done four days a week and people should be allowed to enjoy a three day weekend.  Switzerland does it and people have vacation time on top of that.  Less incidences of sick time, depression and alcoholism also bless that country...kind of funny how that correlates!  I think that we, as Americans, work far too hard and seem to be driven to keep going and going without taking time to smell the roses or enjoy the fruits of our labors.  When we die we won't be able to take the riches with us and nobody will enjoin a eulogy that remembers us for working so hard.

This was an older thread I just seen from January but I figured I'd leave my opinion in it anyways lol  From what I've heard in this area (Northeastern Ohio) that schools want people to have a shorter summer vacation for MORE school not less.  To me it is ridiculous and if the 4 days a week thing happened they would add on summer school.  For me that would kill me because I only get to see my daughter in the summer and during her christmas vacation.  I spend money on plane tickets just to see her and if they added school in the summer I wouldn't be too happy at all.  On another note, they also send "homework" with her for summer vacation!  I was astonished when I first seen it all, it was as thick as a novel.  I never once had homework in the summer, that's the time kids should get to have fun and relax not sit and do school work.

In my opinion the 4 days a week of her at school would be good if they didn't add on more days in the summer for her to be there because then I would be flipping out.

I think that a four day school week and work week makes sense as long as you are covering the same amount of time, curriculum, and output.  A fifth day incorporates yet another day of commuting, preparing, re-introducing yourself to the previous day's task which is a lot of wasted time. Working extra hours for fewer days lets you stay focused on the project at hand and can even invade your private time by thinking about what it is that you did all day. Having a three day weekend allows a longer time to get refreshed and forget about what you did the previous week.  I work four 9 hour days and one four hour day with weekends open and absolutely love it.

We have had school 4 days a week for several years. Longer hours though. Hasn't hurt the kids. This is a very rural area and some buses run at least 45 miles one way. And with the cost of fuel they have too do it and then on top of that of course  the cost of maintaing the schools and heatin and cooling. It can get pretty hot here and also very cld in the winter, so the schoold had to do something. It seems to be working out.

The kid in my is screaming "four days a week all the way!"  I'm out of school, and I remember hating the fact that the weekend was all too short. When I went to college we only had a four day week and I felt like a lot of pressure was lifted off my shoulders. I also made way better grades. School isn't just education, its social  interaction and a million other things I can't think of at the moment. Trying to cram as much information inside a student's head usually has a negative result. However, I understand that in order to keep up with other countries and have functioning world citizens, we need to do something with the educational system here in the U.S.  Maybe a good compromise to this is to have the last week of the month "Friday-free" on a regular basis. Give the kids something to look forward to. Even a small change like that will improve mood and I think will show up in better grades.   :cat:

The principal and I had meetings and I just was tired of the excuses. My son could have drowned and died that day if other kids didnt speak up. I have seen a change in him with no more nightmares and no biting his nails down to nubbs. No more saying Mom can u change my school...which u have to go to school in area. Im am pleased with his education learning as he is learning so much more. In public school they didnt really teach history or science as he is in 3rd grade. With home school he has learned about Davinci and many other things that I never seen in class curriculum. They have taken arts out of school and he is learning arts and he does music along with learning a second language. It also helps me to learn some things or relearn as an adult.

Why not just reduce the requirement to one day a week.  Kids in the US are so stupid and uncompetative academically against kids in many other countries that it doesn't really matter anyway, why waste the money trying to teach them anything?  One day a week will be enough to teach them how to text messages in their abbreviated format, u-no?

Work week.....perhaps, I know some people that will work 4 days/10 hr weeks....school, not so much-a lot to cram in, plus, many already go until June, which is super late....and yes, keeping kids in school is better than letting them hang out on the streets, etc....

5 days they need to be at school to learn and most people's schedules are for 5 day a week school.

No I do not think reducing the number of days is a good idea. The overall national drop out rate is growing. I really think some children should go to school a half a day on Saturday.

I think they need to stay at 5 days a week.  If some children are still not learning and behind, maybe they need some "special help", tutoring or some other after school mentoring.  I also feel year round school would be better with several vacation periods of 2 or 3 weeks.  When  school starts after summer vacation, teachers have to spend the first several weeks, reteaching what the students learned the year before because with no formal learning or review time they have forgotten a lot.  The people that wanted an extra 1/2 day, that would cost a lot to open the schools for that time, with I feel very little value.  Take the 1/2 day to get your children in things not offered in school: fine arts, physical education, foreign languages,  zoos and animals, space camps, your own cultural heritage, religion, anything that really interests your child.  Recharging time is necessary too for everyone....time to do nothing but just be a kid!   If they have that to look forward to they will do better in the regular school classes and activities.

No, because most parents will have to find someone to take care of their kids all day on that day off while they are at work.

Absolutely not!!! The kids barely are in school as it is when you put early release, half days, holidays and whatever else they are out of school for next. I mean really shouldn't they be learning anyways?? :BangHead:

I think that kids should continue to go to school five days a week, because they need to to learn all that they can and cannot learn nothing by being at home.

You got to be kidding right? American students are at the very bottom in the education scale. Even children in starving countries with little to nothing to survive on are doing better than American children education wise. If you go to any American college today, & ask what's 2+2 90% of the students will pull out their calculator to answer that basic question.  :BangHead: So,no, I think that they should be in school all year round with short periodic breaks instead of a whole summer to forget everything they've learned. If we start doing the year round schooling, the kid's won't know any difference from the days of only 5days of school time.  I :crybaby2: when I think about how bad education in American has become.

No I don't think so. Children need as much time in the classroom that they can get because they seem to not have time to cover material thoroughly as it is.

You are totally crazy why would you want to reduce the school week. Oh my goodness I would go crazy it I had a three day weekend all year with my 5 kids as if the summer isn't bad enough.  Wow lets make it a six day school week. I like that even better.  All in favor say...YES

I can understand Dmecham56's view.  If I was a teacher I could see how the material is hard enough to fit in a 5 day period let along a 4.  However, from a parent's point of view that has two children that have an awful lot of difficulty with what they already have on thier plate, and feel overwhelmed with the amount of work they get.  Perhaps that extra day would be a nice brain reliever for them.  ;)

I believe that five days is the absolute minimum. As stated previously, the curriculum is already packed enough as is and forcing it into a 4 day week will just add further pressure (since everything is condensed into 4 days rather than 5).  At the same time, an extra day does allow for more relaxation but I do not believe that the jump in pressure is worth it, in terms of the child's psychological health.

You cut the days to 4 then it will be more work put in those days that you go.Meaning educators and students will be working harder and reality is they are already working hard as it is!

Kids in the US are already some of the worst educated anywhere on the planet.  Just look at the statistics, we're in a pathetically shameful position compared to many other countries that are much less developed than the US.

What about 4 days a week but--school all year around with longer spring and fall breaks and a summer break of a few weeks instead of a couple of months?

No way, our school kids are already in the bottom of the education scale! I think school should be made year round. Helps kids retain what they learn if there is no 3 months of do nothing summer vacation. This will also help kids from getting in trouble!

If they reduce the number of days they should increase the amount of time students are in school to ensure they are gaining the knowledge they came for.  I actually think this would be a good idea.

it would be nice for the kids. But they have way too much homework now.I stay at home and keep my 2 granddaughters. So this year we will be doing 5th and 2nd grade homework. The 5th grader loves school, but the 2nd grader doesn't.We have a time just getting what we do in her now.She can do it,she just doesn't like it.I think they need to keep the 5 days. The 5th grader says they need to go year round.

Although I'm a student and would absolutely LOVE this, there are many reasons why this isn't going to happen. The school years would be longer and would cut into summer tourism revenue for companies, it would shorten summer breaks, we already have many weeks with days off (last year we had a day or two off almost every other week or two for some reason), and the teachers would get less hours a week reducing their quality of life outside of school. Teachers should be paid more either way. They shape the next generations and don't get enough credit.
