Title: Can you drive a stick shift?
Post by: sommap on December 06, 2010, 07:08:30 am
The first time I drove one, I was about sixteen and a cousin had an old car and he had me drive around for an afternoon.  I had a couple of boyfriends who had a stick shift and I drove them once in a while.  We had one van at home that had a stick shift and I think I only drove it a few times.  I am ok unless I am on a hill.  I am not confident enough to balance everything so I don't roll down into the car behind me.  Needless to say, all of my own cars have been automatics.  I haven't driven one in years and don't think I will again unless I am forced to do so in an emergency.

The first car I drove, without a license, was a 6 speed Italian Lancia that was illegally imported into the US. I drove a 70 VW with a 327 engine in the back seat, an 86 Toyota MR2 5 speed, a 4 speed Milk Delivery truck and currently have a 5 speed subaru Impreza...Love stick!

I sure can and also taught my two daughters on a stick shift vehicle. Made them think while driving instead of just putting it in "D" and going -LOL!

I haven't driven a stick for about 9 years now. I taught myself when I was 18 because I had no choice if I was going to get to work.

I really don't know??? A little....lol..... I tried once during the summer but had a hard time on the hills and balancing the clutch along with the gas pedal....that's my only problem. Once I get that, I know how to operate the stick shift and drive down the road, but I still need help with the clutch big time! Plus, in my husband's truck, I can barely reach the pedals so he had to up the seat as close as he could. It was funny because even then, I had to really hold a strong grip on the steering wheel to keep myself up.....lol... :sad1:
Once we were on country roads and I would ALWAYS spin the tires out...it was so funny, not then...but now that I think about it...it was!  ;D

I can but not very well. I've never owned a stick shift vehicle so i've basically never got to practice. I used to drive my boyfriends (now my husband) Mini Couper. He taught me how to drive it. I must admit it was quite humorous but fun.

My dad made sure that I knew how to drive a stick shift. I learned on an old Rambler. I have made sure that each one of our kids learned to drive stick. They had to because we have an 1987 toyota corolla 5 speed that was the kids car. If they couldn't drive it they didn't have a car to drive. Needless to say each child learned to drive it so they could have transportation.

Yep.  All of the cars I've bought myself (2) have been stick.  I love sticks my next car will be a stick as well because they are cheaper.

My future husband and his friend bought a used Army jeep. They taught me to drive the stick shift Jeep in a swamp. I was 16 and drove over a bunch of young trees by accident and they were rolling on the ground they were laughing so hard.

Yes . The first car my dad bought me was a used car which had a stick shift. I had to learn how to drive it or I wouldn't have a car at all.

I love driving a stick (that's what she said) but it's been years since me and my old truck parted ways and I've been in automatics ever since  :crybaby2:

As far back as I can remember, my dad always had an automatic.  He was probably one of the first ones to have one.

Manual transmission is much more fun to drive but really requires more attention so not something I'd want to have to drive all the time.

I lived on a farm, so it was pretty much a necessity for me to be able to drive a stick, since the trucks and tractors all required it. Now we always have at least one car that is a manual. My hubby and I both like to drive fast and have control of the car, so we make sure we have at least one fun car to drive. Unfortunately, since we're going on having our 4th child now, I mainly drive our expedition and I've never seen an expedition with a stick. Hubby gets to drive the fun manual car to work every day. :(

Love driving a stick.  My first car had the shift on the steering column, 1-2-3.  Then I had a 4 on the floor.  That's my favorite, but I also like a 5 speed.  I like the feeling of controlling the car, not the other way around.  Also the control of being stopped on a hill in traffic, and being able to keep it "in play", gearing down while stopping, curves, etc.  People who drive a stick have a love affair with driving period.  I'd drive to the bathroom if I could.

Everyone should know how to drive a stick.  Someone said something about the US Army taught him how to drive everything.  Good for you.
