Post by: lynn426 on February 11, 2011, 06:01:29 am
i feel brita water is better
because its filtered of its impurities
that remain in the pipes overnight.

So when we drink it its taste better than anything else
just my opinion(brita user)

WE have the Brita on our water and we love it it cost about 40 dollars a year to use so that is real not that much for us.

If you are really concerned, boil Brita water. Boiling kills things but doesn't remove much. A filter removes particles but doesn't kill everything. I recommend Vodka.

I agree with brita and boiled. But if you had to choose i'd go with filtered. At least it will taste good before it poisons you.lol

I think it depends on the water source.  My city tap water is fine just filtered.  But I would want to boil well water even if it tastes fine.

Hate to tell you guys but Brita filters are garbage....you need to test your water (even if u have a Brita) with ph strips and see for yourself.

I would love to get filtered water. We have well water and I usually boil it for drinking.

Filters, like Brita, use an ion exchange to remove unwanted minerals (like lead, iron, etc) in exchange for safer ones (like calcium, potassium, etc). They may also include an actual filter to remove particles. But you'd have to determine what size of particulates are filtered out and what size are let through; and see if that filtration size will remove any harmful microbes that you may be concerned about. If your concerns are about the minerals that get dissolved in the water, then filtering is probably best. If on the other hand you are more concerned about getting sick from microbes, then boiling would be best. Ideally, distilling water (boil the water, then let the steam condense in an unreactive cooling coil) would remove not only the microbes, but also the minerals as well. However distilled water tastes very bland (the dissolved minerals actually give the water a little taste to it), so most people prefer ion exchange to drink rather than distilled water (and usually distilled water is only seen in research laboratories, where even trace amount of minerals / particulates can affect the results of experiments).

Since I get my water from the city, it's mostly the mineral content that I'd be worried about, so I usually drink filtered water. But even if you get well water, you may consider filtering in addition to boiling, esp. if you live in an area with a high mineral content (ie if you have "hard" water).

Brita water is better for me. It filters all the impurities out so you have fresh drinking water . As opposed to boiling water where you have to wait for it to cool down just to drink it....

I really doesn't matter to me either way but if I had to choose I would probably go with the boiled water just because it's cheaper.

You are talking apples and oranges. Boiling the water kills germs. Filtering the water takes out other impurities. Boil the water let it cool and then filter it. Killing the germs and removing impurities, like chloride, etc.

I will say brita water is better all because it is fresh and most of all clear. I never drunk boiling water where I had to drink it but I have tasted tap water and I did not like it. I can tell the difference from clear good water from tap.

I will go with boiled.  You can let the steam condense and drink it.    With Brita, you may get a little carbon.

We drink water from the water store. 60 cents for 3 gallons and 6 gallons a month 120. In 12 months 14.40 so by far Im saving money. Plus the water taste good and Ive never tasted Brita water so I cannot not compare. I never drink the tap water here cause it looks like it has a white cloudy substance in it. Yuck! :confused1:

I'm currently with another filtration system, but Brita taste better and is possibly a bit safer. Boiling is my alternate if I don't have a filtration system. Of course in the end I put enough junk in my body the contaminates I might get from tap water is probably outweighed by this anyway. My district's water system is suppose to be pretty decent already.

I would agree.. filtered water.

I use only filtered water for things not cooked.

Great question... Interesting to see how people chose their water.   :D

Happy Earnings!!

I have a point of use water filter on my sink. I buy bottled water only to reuse the bottles after we use the water that came with it. if you use a charcoal filter, those kinds will filter even that taste of chlorine thats added to your drinking water at the source, then it tastes as fresh as if it came from a under ground spring.

The real problem I have with boiled water is it's hot.  I prefer to drink cold water so if I boil the water I then have to wait for it to cool before drinking.  While the Brita water is more expensive (since you have to keep buying filers, I perfer it because I can drink right there from the sink without wasiting money on a gas/electric bill.

Brita user too and it taste better as well. But if your town says to boil the water don't use your Brita filter just yet. Boil the water, let it cool then filter it. Since you ask which is better, better for what purpose. Tap water may have impurities, but as long as they are not biological, you will not see any ill effects right away. Depending on where you get your water from, it may smell bad and taste bad as well. But our water supply is pretty good. Read about this if you get a chance, "Gastrointestinal Health Effects Associated with the Consumption of Drinking Water Produced by Point-of-Use Domestic Reverse-Osmosis Filtration Units". Filtering and boiling do different things.
