Title: Ran Ipod through Washer & Dryer
Post by: home_teachin on February 12, 2011, 07:27:12 pm
My ipod Nano 5th gen went through the washer and dryer. It was in a pocket. Of course now it doesn't work. I'm giving it some time to dry out. Any suggestions? Has anyone had this happen and the ipod survived?

Well, try this anyway.

1.  Take it completely apart as much as possible.  If you tried turning it on while it was wet.....it probably short circuited.  Better not to turn it on till much later.

2.  Wipe off as much water as possible that is visible.  Use a vacuum to suck out the water out of crevices.  Do not use a hair dryer with heat.  You want to "suck" the water "out".

3.  Immerse in a bag of rice.  Rice will absorb water.

4.  Wait, wait, wait, for it to dry out.

Recharge, and try to turn on......good luck.  I dropped my cell phone in a puddle, and it wasn't there for more than 3 seconds, but it was dead as a doornail......forever.  Hopefully, you might be able to salvage your ipod.

Wow, it works! I left it in a bowl of rice overnight. I can see a little condensation around the edges of the screen but it works and the computer recognizes it. I'm going to leave it to dry a few more days before charging it and testing it again. I'm amazed it works. It went through the washer with hot water ( and soap of course) and about 20 minutes in a dryer on medium.  for Apple

glad to hear you got it back...that would have stunk elsewise....I had my computer damaged from water not too long ago-it was frustrating.

Glad it came back on! My sister dropped her phone in the toilet a while back (don't ask me how she did it...lol) and she did the rice thing too. It turned back on. I was glad it did considering the fact that she had only owned the phone for two days.

WOW - i'm surprised to hear that it survived!
i dropped my phone in our fish tank a few years ago
(it wasn't an actual tank, it was more of a large
gadening tub. at any rate, it was a large amount of water!)
but things like that really do happen and until it happens
to you, you can't fathom how in the world it does...

luckily, my phone did survive. we took it apart and let
it dry out for a few days because we'd heard of that
suggestion.

it survived being peed on as well, but that's another story...

I've heard if you bury it in rice (if you eat it) will absorb water more quickly then any other method. Chances are the ipod is not good anymore, esp going through the washer.

A week after I purchased a new Blackberry I went to see my daughter's swim meet.  My right pocket held my Blackberry and I had my Itouch in my left pocket.  I fell in the pool and jumped right back out.  I didn't turn either device on and was told to put them each in a bag of uncooked rice to draw the moisture out.  The Blackberyy never revived while the Itouch was fully operational within one week.

See this many times, best thing to do is let it completely dry before powering on.
The rice thing is new to me.

I have had this happen to me as well the best advice I can give you to see if it can gain its life back is...

1.) Is remove any headphones extra items on the nano....
2.) Get a ziploc bag the freezer size ones, open the bag, and put in some white rice half full
3.) Keep this in their overnight or for at least 24 hours. 12 hours will work but 24 is even better
4.) After the time is up see if you can turn on your nano. But make sure before you turn it on that you do not see or feel any visible signs of water.
5.) I had to repeat steps 2&3 twice in order for my nano to come back to life, but it did exactly work. Very surprised!!

My good friend also filled up a bag with those silica packets that you can find in shoes, clothing, and other products. I know that she was able to go to a retail chain store and pick some up. She just asked if she could speak with someone in recieve and they came out with a huge handful of them.

Good luck hope this helps!!

If none of this works....do you still have your warranty? I know that Apple is pretty good with trying to fix products, or help you get a new one if your warranty isn't up. Even if it is I would go to the Apple store and see what they can do for you.
