Title: I own weird pets, how about your pets?
Post by: tantricia44 on August 02, 2011, 06:26:30 pm
I have 2 cats that have a strange taste pallet. They like to eat mushrooms from the can. Which is a danger to my mushroom stock. I love mushrooms, so do my cats. Other weird behaviors one likes to chase his tail, the other runs a hundred mile dash after going in the litter box. I'm trying to train them to be more like dogs then cats. It is really, really, really, really, hard! Do you have pets with strange or weird behaviors? :cat: :dog: :bunny: :fish:

Well, I wouldn't call my little black cat, Sweetie, weird.  Maybe a bit odd; possibly kind of strange; but weird?  Nah.

My two dogs are complete oddities. At least, I often think so. I remember one time, my small dog was in my room with me while I was watching t.v. When I got up to go get a drink, I happen to notice her checking out her butt in my mirror!  :bootyshake: LOL! I have closet doors that are full mirrors and she was standing in front of them having a look. I've never seen any other pet do such a thing.

I have a cat that has a foot fetish. Everytime I come home, she always sniffs my feet and my socks. I've caught her a few times with her head in my shoes.

We just have 1 dog. Sometimes a real pain in the keister. If I had my choice I would rather have a bowl of fish!

The best pet I ever had was a squirrel.  He fell out of a tree and was injured when I was in college, so I kept him so he wouldn't die.  He would go to sleep in my pocket.  He would come out of my pocket and run up my clothes and sit on my shoulder.  I can't stress enough:  the best pet I have ever had.

Wierd, Strange & Bizarre:  My kitten "Tuna" came home from a cat adoption center with a free bag of Science Diet Kitten Food that he refused to eat, and "runny poop".  He was starving and was trying to eat EVERYTHING but the cat food. I gradually switched him to Avoderm Kitten food (canned & dry).  I stopped giving him anything but the cat food when his "runny poop" condition seemed to be getting worse.  The vet thought another round of de-worming would help along with a change in food.  He was gradually switched to Innova (can & dry) and now the "runny poop" situation is about as bad as it could get (he makes it to the litterbox...if he didn't, I'd REALLY be STRESSED).  The vet is thinking he maybe has Irritable Bowel Syndrome and needs to make sure he's done with his de-worming to know for sure.  I'm stressing that he's a kitten and it's easy for kittens/cats to die, I don't have alot of patience to "want to wait".   (I haven't found much on-line that helps and I'm just trying to cope with the fact that this kitten might not be looking at a very long lifespan.  His food seems to just be passing right through him faster than he can absorb any good from it.  He's getting bigger but he feels so "light".) Most people I know with cats say their cats can eat just about anything and they never have a problem...I don't know why this kitten is having such a hard time.
If anyone has any kitten-advice or a cat with IBS and can offer some tips, that would be so great!!

My dog eats potato and other vegetable peelings and loves the insides of squash (pulp and seeds). Doesn't really care for his doggy treats though lol  :dog:
He's a cocker spaniel - also doesn't lick me in the face (just snorts in my face occasionally) and is super soft. Really more cat like (although very devoted and not far from underfoot, so very doggy there lol), which is definitely part of the appeal for me ;D

Shery: So sorry to hear about your problems! I don't ever remember having that problem. :( Really hope you get it cleared up and things get better.
Only thing I can suggest is make sure Tuna gets enough liquid, maybe add Pedialyte or Nutrical so he gets more nutrients and calories?
Also, I think canned (with puppies anyways) seems to keep them in the soft poo stage longer, so try to feed mainly dry. And no milk, since most cats are lactose intolerant (although you probably already knew that).

(thanx hicaniplay!  I started using the Pedialyte today, last night & today has so far been the worst and I was a little worried about him becoming dehydrated.  I've had people tell me their cats eat everything: trash, rotten food, other pets poop, and even fast food and they were never sick.  A friend recommended a half teas of canned pumpkin so we'll start trying that tomorrow.  He's also getting a small amount of plain yogurt a few times a week since he's been on antibiotics and that may have upset his digestive system.
I spent this morning in PetSmart reading in their book aisle and there's so many things that can cause digestive disturbances in kittens, it's no wonder the vet doesn't have an immediate diagnosis.   I have to take in another sample from the litterbox to the vet sometime this week for them to check, hopefully something helps this little guy soon.  I think I saw the nutrical in PetSmart, I'll go back and check that out tomorrow.  Thanks so much for the tips!!)

Fantastic tip for pet parents...Diatomaceous Earth ( be sure to use food-grade ONLY).   Fleas & tics, and all internal parasites will be gone in a few short weeks. Depending on the size of the dog or kitty (usually 1 teas-1 Tbl daily) sprinkle it right onto their food, mine love it! **For fleas, put some in an old sock and dust it all over the fur, be very careful not to get it in their eyes and don't let them or you breathe it in.  This can be used on any age animal, it'seven safe for nursing mother dogs and cats. It won't hurt the babies and will insure them to be "bug/worm/parasite-free"!!  Food-grade diatomaceous earth can be purchased online, just be absolutely sure it's food grade. I found a huge bag of it from a rancher on Ebay that uses it on his animals (both he & his wife also take it) it was very inexpensive and it doesn't expire.  It's an all-natural, healthy remedy for what most veterinarians will prescribe "toxic meds" & health harming chemicals.
I started giving my kitten Tuna this 1/4 teas twice a day mixed in his food and then increased to 1/2 teas twice a day when the vet started suspecting that he may have a parasite problem and they wanted to put him through multiple de-wormings. (Start out with a small amount and gradually increase because it can cause bloating.) It's been three weeks, he seems to have improved alot...no more "runny poo" and he just passed his "worm-check" yesterday--it was negative.  ;D whoo-hoo!!

*As always, be sure to check with your veterinarian before making any significant changes to your pets normal dietary routine.

I have a Siberian husky (Malibu) who is addicted to towels! She doesn't eat them, just rubs her face in them! Also, she is really super quiet, which is kinda weird for the breed... is that bad ???

Cat's are strange to begin with.  Why would you want them to be more like a dog?

I wouldn't say my pet is wierd, but he is a very old mini schnauzer (15yrs now) and when he runs, which isn't very often, he jumps like a bunny.  All I have to say to him to keep him going is "Are you a goofy puppy?"

So glad to hear Tuna is better!

I've heard of Diatom Earth before, but it always kinda ... well, isn't it like dirt or sand or very small rocks? I don't know how comfortable I am with feeding it to animals.
I never thought about getting it from Ebay. Might have a look, if it's cheap maybe. Dunno if I'd use it for internal, but doesn't hurt to try for fleas. Plus, I heard it helps in the garden, so if I change my mind on using it on the pets, can always use it there next year I suppose.

Still, hard to ignore your experience, since I know you're not selling it or have anything to gain by endorsing it and it actually happened to help in a real situation.

I've always wanted sea horses but have heard that they are really difficult to keep alive and very endangered in the wild.  They are so cute but I don't guess I'll ever have any  :sad1:

Thanks!!  I wish I had known about the whole kitten/worm cycle process and about the diatomaceous earth from day one of bringing Tuna home, especially with his mother having been a barn cat (high worm risk).  Instead, the shelter told me they had de-wormed him already twice and the vet & I thought he was worm-free then.  Apparently, he still had the cycle carrying on inside until I started dosing him with the diatomaceous earth.  The diatomaceous earth is a fine, white powder and the texture kind of resembles fine white flour.  It's the remains of one-celled plants that once lived in the bottoms of oceans/lakes.  It's been used for years and is multi-purpose.

I'm not selling it and get nothing for endorsing it.  I got a healthier kitten for purchasing him some and because it is so economical and good for so many things, I thought the money-saving FC members would enjoy knowing about it.  Can't beat the unlimited shelf life and it's all natural/all healthy, gotta love that!  I got mine from ebay seller wolf creek ranch and they also have a few different websites with alot of helpful information on the diatomaceous earth if anyone is interested,  just put them in your search bar.  I ordered from them only because I thought they seemed the most professional/most knowledgable on the product vs. just some random seller selling a product they know nothing about.  I'd turn the world upside down to find a remedy when one of my fur-kids is sick, I was really surprised that something so "plain" and "cheap" actually worked.   Tuna has had nothing but "runny poo" since the day I brought him home, I thought I was going to have to re-name him "poopy paws"--- I can't help being all excited that he is now done with all that mess!   :)

I am happy to see Tuna is better.  I have heard of diatomaceous earth but never tried it because of the mixed reviews out there.

My dog likes to scratch the walls until he gets to the drywall then he licks the drywall.  ewwww.  One of my cats named heffer likes to get socks out of the sock drawer and she carries them around the house everwhere meowing the whole time.  She thinks she is such a good hunter!  ;)

Sorry but I had to chuckle over your cats eating mushrooms. We used to have a German Shepard that loved fresh tomatoes. Now I have a dog that loves to pick up big rocks and hide them. He has also been known to grab onto a small tree and chew on it until it falls. I have videos of this and laugh every time I watch them.

There are alot of dogs that are always available on a moments notice for a road trip.  I know a guy that has a little dog (brussels griffon/shih tzu mix) that is a biker.  He will run and jump up on the motorcycle every time the guy opens the garage.  Every weekend the guy takes the dog for a ride on the bike.  The dog has a seatbelt, has a little helmet (sometimes goggles) and an entire collection of Harley-wear.  Alot of times when people first see the dog on the bike, they say it's unsafe...until they get to know the owner and how much the dog loves to ride.  It's so funny to see them both riding on the bike.  There's a dog made for everyone... ;)
