Title: Do you salt your food before tasting it?
Post by: sommap on September 14, 2011, 09:45:24 am
Many years ago, I realized my husband automatically liberally salted his food before tasting it, so I got in the practice of not using salt when I cooked, unless it was in something I baked and it had to have salt.  Of course, he never knew the difference.  Since then, I have gotten into the habit of not using salt on anything.  I swear I have had the same box of salt for years and the salt shakers do not move out of my cubbard.

I do have a brother-in-law (same family as my husband), who loads his food with salt and, he has low blood pressure.

All my life I was able to eat pretty much anything I wanted. Now in my advanced years I find that I have high blood pressure. Now I must stay away from salt/sodium. I am now amazed at how much sodium is in processed meats, canned foods and just abut everything we eat. It is hard to believe that I added salt to food before. I am now of the opinion that Americans eat way too much salt/sodium.

I salt my food because if I don't it doesn't taste good. I don't use too much tough because I'm aware I can get high blood pressure.

I always try to taste the food before adding salt and I try to buy items that are low sodium or no salt added. I'm trying to figure out ways to add flavor (and nutrition) to my meals without overdoing the salt.

No, I always taste food first and if food needs seasoning I'll add it.

I always taste my food before salting it. The only food I really use a lot of salt on is steak. I do not nor have ever had high blood pressure. Everyone was on my back about how much salt I used. My Doc finally told me that some people just need more salt than others, and if it was not affecting my health, then my salt intake was okay. He said that if my body changed and didn't need as much salt, it would let me know.

Yes, I use salt all the time but minimum amount, just to have a bit of taste. :)

No, I never add more salt to my food, even after i taste it.  It is not healthy to add more salt to your food.

I salt my food if it's needed. What if it's already too salty? you'll just have to toss your food then.

I do put some time of dressing or seasoning in my food, but I try to minimize my salt intake for health reasons.

I use a salt sub. I do taste my food first as most foods have enough just by themself.

I am trying to stay healthy and have been eating more veggies and healthy foods.  I miss the taste of high salt foods, which make up most canned goods and almost all fast food places (along with high fat).  But I now can taste much more flavor from raw and steamed veggies, as well as home grown spices added to meals.

No I taste my food first because I don't want to much salt on my food.  Most of the time I dont salt my food after it hits my plate just on certain things.

I never do!  I always taste first.  Most things never need salt; so it is best to taste.  You can always add/ but you can't take away if it is too salty! :-X

no because it may not need an extra salt, and too much salt is bad for your health.

I try not to use any more salt than absolutely necessary.  I use a lot of other various spices in my cooking that we don't really miss the salt.

never before...!
i used to be very anti-salt... i have grown to enjoy a light sprinkle on a select few foods... roast beef or runny fried eggs.. (yum) and steak of course. garlic can be just as good ( and often better!) than salt.
my mom, dad, brother, and husband are all salt fanatics, i dont know how they taste their food at all! but ive never really liked condiments either... guess im weird!

Taste first. Add salt in increments until taste is good.

I think that is the dumbest thing ever when someone immediately grabs the salt out of habit and start dumping it on their food. I really take offense when someone is eating something I made and they do that......what you didn't think it would taste good, so you had to add salt before.  :(
