Title: Pet Tricks
Post by: smithjcsdfw on November 03, 2011, 02:45:09 pm
Have you ever taught a pet a trick and what was it.  For example I have taught several dogs over my life to shake hands.

I taught my current dog to wait in the car until I was out and called for her. I also taught her how to hold a treat on her nose.

I often train my dogs with both voice and hand signals.  I also like to train them to match my exact pace when jogging running and find it cool/funny to watch them match my speed and direction as I deliberately alter them quickly (like fast 90 and 180 degree turns, sprint, stop, jog, etc).  I show them which side to follow me on and how to turn when I turn.  It still amazes me that once you make the connection with the animal how ready and willing they are to learn.

I had a horse once that was very smart. I would use voice commands to him and he would do as I say. Walk, trot, cantor, back up, left, right etc. He was a quarter horse.

Yeah, my dog's are fairly terrible ::) :P Only a few have ever been taught any actual tricks. And most of them are lacking in basic manners, but it's only really important that they come when called and leave when told in our house. Wait for the food to be put down, don't leave the yard, hush when told. We're very soft touches. :dog:
Sit (and be calm) and come, those are really the most important things anyways, right?

But on the trick front, my mother is trying to train our Chinese Crested to say "Hello", because he does this really annoying high pitched whine that sounds sorta like "hello" whenever you walk in the door or get him really wound up and excited.
My sister's Newfoundland is smart, picks up tricks quickly, and is very food-oriented. He's just also really big and drooly, so currently only knows sit, lay down, shake, manners like don't jump on people or pull on the leash, and speak. I think teaching him "speak" was a bad idea though, because he didn't used to bark nearly so much before he got rewarded for it lol

The only tricks my dogs know is how to beg! LOL! I've tried a little bit but they're too old and stubborn now. I guess I spoiled them way too much all these years.  :fish:

I'm really a I dog person & I prefer to train dogs but after all my dogs had passed & my husband passed after wishbone his favorite died. 2 Stray cats befriended me & my hubby. Everyone tells me that you can't do this or do that with cats. You can't teach cats to be like a dog. I'm a person that takes the challenge when you say I can't do something I go ahead & do it! Just prove them wrong. Nothing is set in stone to me. Just because something in society is set as a status que doesn't mean you can't bend it. My cats knows how to sit on command. They can sit in front of their food bowl & wait until they get the command to eat. They also know the lay down command.Need to work on the come command, it's hit or miss right now.LOL...  My Cat-dog(s) are so smart! Splat & Shadow, totally too  8) for words! Cats rule & dogs drool! Lol....    :cat: :cat:   Splat, Splat super brat oh my goodness you're a CAT! LoLl!

When I was a kid, I had parakeets. My parakeets could  copy a few works and make whistling sounds like humans.

My dog "talks" to me when I come home. I didn't teach him, he just started it all by himself  :dog:

I taught my grandpuppy, a little miniature pincher, to sit up.  She had never tried sitting up before so I tried to help her, but she wouldn't stay up.  So I sat her in a corner where she could lean back until she got the feel for what I wanted her to do and after that, she could sit up on command with no problem.  Took just a couple of sessions.

I trained my dog to sit, lay down, to go to her bed (with the command "go nigh-night"), to get up on her hind legs, to come when called, and to stay.

Cats are quite trainable, actually.  The average cat are just more independent on average, and less likely to do a command, in addition to the fact that people don't try to train them.  My cat plays fetch with me (because my dog won't).  He also responds to the "come here" command.
