Just curious how many people would think of buying a home-made scarf...
Compared to a store bought one....
I knit all the time.. all year long actually...and often wondered what and how people think about this topic.
Would you give a gift of a scarf... or hat for that matter.... made from a person?
Or a scarf/hat mass produced from a store?
Just curious..... :)

I love homemade gifts. I would make my own and give it.

I also love home made gifts. I would rather support an entrepreneur rather than a big business.I would definitely buy homemade rather than store-bought given the option. Also, homemade gifts come from the heart. :wave: :peace:

I love homeade gifts. You should post us some pics of some of the items you knit. Do you ever sell anything. If not you should consider it.

the only reason i would buy a store-bought scarf
or hat (and i have) is the cost. i'm a bargain shopper
and where i shop, scarves and hats are less expensive
than buying a handmade one.
i make things myself, so i totally understand that
time, effort, and materials must be accounted for as
well as a little profit! some people gawk at the price
of handmade goods, but when you break it down,
it makes sense.
i buy handmade scarves/hats when i have the fundage :thumbsup:

I agree totally!!
When I am knitting that is what I am doing... Not coming off a machine or being mass produced. My home made gifts come from the heart.
I would love to go to craft fairs, senior centers etc.. You see the love that the people have and you can see that in their work. I believe you can see that in mine also :heart:

I also love home made gifts!! I love to go to the Senior Center in town... Supporting the elderly... just going there and talking with them.. expressing how great there items are.. and then purchasing from them... Makes my heart feel good!!
I do not know how to post pics here.. but do sell everything. I have found Face Book a great place.
The best is word of mouth. I knit for me... it is therapy for me... So I in no means ask for an unreasonable price. I feel if you are Happy... you will tell your family and friends.. and possibly come back and order something else :thumbsup:

I understand. I guess the only difference is.. when you buy a home made one.. One that is made to order.... you can pick the color and pattern you would like.
You can chose the width, length.. specify reg scarf or an infinity (a loop that wraps around the head and neck).. and you can chose the stitch that is used etc.
There is definitely time and money put into everything home made... I totally agree there.
I only hope to get more people aware that there are scarves, hats etc... available at reasonable prices... Word of mouth helps build customer bases.

I have been given home-made scarves and have enjoyed them. The quality is nice, and it is great to receive a gift you know was personally made just for you, adds a special touch that you don't get from store-bought scarves.

I am so glad there are other FC people that do crafts and give for gifts I crochet and this is my 2nd year making all my gifts so handmade is definitely better :thumbsup:

I am curious about this comment. Are you saying you do not think people should ever buy a homemade scarf??
Reason being because people give them out?
Some people are unable to knit or crochet... I am blessed to be one that is able to loom knit now.
Those said people that are unable.. some of them do like to give something that someone else has made.
As you have possibly read the prior posts.
My question was truly a preference.
All kinds of people make all kinds of crafts.. it is such a wonderful hobby. We love to share them. Yes some do give away.. I have given many away.. Hats to cancer centers... to friends of friends or family friends or classmates I went to high school.
With all that said.. I appreciate your comment.. just thought I would explain a bit why some people (other than the wonderful things FC members have stated) why they buy homemade crafts.

Hand crafted products are always better quality. I make handcrafted products as well..... you should sell them on Etsy. It is a great place to by quality handmade items.... Where in a store can you buy MADE IN THE USA PRODUCTS????? At a reasonable price! But on Etsy you can buy from all over the world .... but you have MANY MANY MANY artisans that are here in the USA .... hometown people that make a much better product than those made in China ( no offense ) but you know what i mean ... mass produced.

Agreed... I would most definitely agree with you there.
Paying for something.. I make sure it is of good quality and is not going to fall apart... etc...
Honestly with some things.. it is hard to do that with store bought items. They are not completely sewn etc...
So point well taken. USA products are very hard to find these days seriously. And because I know how much times goes into making things from the smallest and simplest things as a drink coaster. Making sure all the seams are together.. then quilting them all together.
I will be there first to tell you.. I am very picky. Money is money... Those that are crafters etc... whether you give away or sell... we take pride in what we do.
And the Etsy.. please keep nudging me and reminding me... I keep forgetting to post all my scarves and hats on there. Thank you so much for reminding me yet again.
Mass produced is the key word there... There is nothing there.. slide it along to the next person.. they have a quota.. if something is not perfect.. they do not have time to check everything.. come on please...
Getting a home made product you are getting something made from someones precious time. They look at every single thing that is needed to be done to that product. For those of us who only make sure the best goes out.. or is seen or shown...
I have ripped out so many things.. because they need to be perfect.
I want the person receiving.. to get what I would want. GREAT old saying...
and of course.. migraine is still lingering.. so cant think.....
Help me out here... You pay for what you get... etc....

I agree totally...
Some one is actually sitting there taking time out and making something very special for someone else.. or to let others see them.
Maybe some people do not understand this.. because of all that is involved.
So wonderful to see that there are more out here that love doing things like this too!!! :heart:

It really wouldn't matter if it was store bought or homemade. I would chose the one that was the best quality. Sometimes store-bought things are so cheaply mass produced that they aren't really worth the yarn they are made with!

Yes I would agree with you there.. I see a lot of things.. were people of made things.. and it is just not my cup of tea... so to say.
The great thing about that is.... to us no.. but to someone else.. yes maybe. The world is full of so many different people.. we can all like what we like.. and that is okay.
That is what makes us so diversified. Trust me.. ask my husband.. he is so sick of hearing about my scarves and hats.. and now shawls??? haha...
He is a truck driver on the road.. so that is my excitement everyday... oh honey.. look.. a new hat.. or a new scarf.. haha..

I buy them home made when I'm in Thailand because my girlfriend's friends make them and I get them very cheap. I also purchase home made hats and got a great deal on a hand-made table cloth.
