Title: Coupon ladies Charged!
Post by: tantricia44 on December 08, 2011, 09:25:31 pm
Remember the Coupon ladies that literally use coupons to buy gross/material goods w/nothing but coupons. They showed 1 lady spend $300.00+ dollars worth of material goods & after all the coupons, she paid only 10 cents for her purchase. Totally wow right? Recently, these coupon ladies was charged with stealing. Charged for stealing the neighbors' newspapers, mags, business coupons in the mail.I don't understand why steal your neighbor's coupons, you can get free coupons in the internet & just print it out.  :dontknow:

On one of the very first shows of Extreme Couponing, they showed a couple of ladies dumpster diving for coupons.  I get that they have a desire to get multiple amounts of certain items but dumpster diving, that's way extreme.

So silly, agreed that there are plenty of coupon sites to get free coupons.  I guess you have to pay for the ink and paper in your printer, too much??
I think it's weird that so many of the shows I have seen people are "hoarding"/stocking up on such silly things, just because they get them for free.   I totally get it when you're buying things you need and will use, or giving to charitable organizations, but to have just to have seems senseless!

Omg!! I saw that too once. I went to pick up my mail at the post office and seen this lady digging through the trash looking at all these flyers that people threw away. To make it even more hilarious, she even had some scissors and I could tell that she had been cutting the coupons out. Seriously, if it wasn't bad enough to get flyers through the trash........you couldn't wait until you went home to cut the coupons out?? lol  :angry7: :P

Wow that is extreme desperation with maybe a little bit of OCD thrown in there. If they wanted multiple newspapers with same effort they put into saving, they could have found a legitimate way to get them!

I can understand why she wants the coupons from neighbors' newspapers, etc. Many of you mention that all she needs to do is use the internet. However, I'm sure that she already is using the internet to print out coupons, along with clipping them out of newspapers, peel stickies off of the items themselves, pull coupons from pads on the store shelves, etc. But the trick is to get coupons from many different sources, and then match up store specials with the coupons that you have. Even though there are coupons on-line, they may not be worth as much as one in the newspaper, or it may limit to a certain size which doesn't match what the store is running it's special on. Also, when it comes to extreme couponing, you want to be able to buy as many of the item as possible when the price is extremely low to stockpile it for later when the price is high. So getting the same ad insert from multiple newspapers allows you to have multiple copies of the same coupon with which to purchase the same item multiple times for the low price.

Now what the lady did was wrong... Instead of just taking the coupons without permission, she should have just talked with the newspaper owners and see whether they'd be willing to give her the ad inserts. Some extreme couponers with make a trade with their neighbors; they get the neighbors' ads and in return when a certain item the neighbor wants finally gets to a very low price, the extreme couponer will buy up that product and give it to the neighbor in exchange. Also many businesses (eg coffee shops, waiting rooms, etc.) may get a subscrition to a newspaper for their customers to read, but may not have a use for the ad inserts, and so would be willing to give to the extreme couponer for free if they asked the business manager / owner.

I think they are cheating the system. At least all the stores around here only allow one manufacturer coupon and one store coupon (which they rearely ever have) for each item. Most coupons actually say that you can only use one coupon on the same product. There is probably some special arrangement that the producers of the "reality" shows have with the stores, just for filming purposes.

When you print coupons from the internet, you usually have a limit of two for each item or coupon.  I gree that what they did was wrong and they should be punished.  The stores shown on the extreme couponing show agreed to participate and it was all staged or planned.  How many stores do you know that carry one hundred toothbrushes or something like that.  How about 100 boxes of cheerios.  I have only watched a  few of the shows and it seems most of the people are very greedy and a bit sick tohave such a stockpile that it almost drives you out of your house.  Do we need enough of something to last us for one hundred years?  I did see one show where they donated most of the stuff to charity.

I do have a small stockpile myself, but it would fill about half a dozen grocery bags.

That shows you two things!! Both stupidity and how bad the economy is getting that anyone would stoop that low to steal coupons. There are coupons galore on the Internet and alot of grocery stores have boxes of coupons that can be gone through to help out. You don't have to stoop to stealing.

Around here that isn't very helpful to have that many coupons.  Most places will only double the first of the same kind of coupon.  Unless you put them in seperate transactions you aren't really saving like these ladies.  Not to mention, a lot of grocery stores are changing there policies to do away with all the extreme couponing.

Walgreens. This happens at Walgreens too much! Usually only 1 register. The some 'see you next Tuesday' takes 20 minutes to buy $4 body wash with 40 coupons.

I always wondered how those extreme coupon people had so many coupon inserts. I always figured they went to the newspaper vending machine things, paid the $1.50 and stole what was in there.

In regards to why they don't just go online and print the coupons is because most coupon sites limit the amount you can print and two most stores do not allow you to double internet coupons whereas you can double manufactured coupons, that's how they are able to get more items at a low or free cost. As for the person that said they are cheating the system and your stores only allow one coupon that doesn't sound right. The coupons say one coupon per purchase so if I have 5 toothpastes that is considered 5 purchases so I can use 5 coupons.

To some degree I wish I had the patience of some of these extreme coupon users to save money, but stealing other's papers is a big no no. I've seen people buy multiple Sunday papers which sometimes annoys me if there are only a few left, but at least they're paying for them. As to coupon use I tend to have far less arguments when cutting out of physical sources than I do from printing out on the Internet, so if I really had the time and devotion I would spend more focus on searching for coupons through physical sources.

Yes, some people do make extreme efforts to achieve savings. Stealing isn't appropriate. Why not just ask? However, I do see in reading some of the replies that many of you are not responsible for the lives of others. If you are the sole support of yourself and your children and you lose your job - there are many things you will do to make ends meet. Including standing in the post office cutting coupons! I only see lack of life experience when I read many of these comments.

I've just started using coupons.  I've already saved a great deal and have found I have to shop very differently.  In the past, we would only shop for what we need and go to the stores that carried that item for the least.  I now match up sales with coupons and although I might be buying something that I don't need yet, I will eventually need it and I am now saving a great deal.  I recently bought 8 tubes of Crest toothpaste for 25 cents a tube by combining my coupons with a great sale.  I don't need 8 tubes right now, but we will go through them.  Last night we bought 6 boxes of Chex cereal for $1.17 a box.  That's not a huge sale, but Chex cereal is usually twice as much.  I try to buy more than one newspaper.  Some of our stores (including our Walmart) will not accept coupons printed from the internet.

My 9 year old has watched the extreme couponing show and wants me to go dumpster diving.  I guess he thinks it looks fun.  I've had to explain to him that I won't be doing it and that I'm not extreme.  Taking coupons/newspaper from recycle bins at the end of driveways is not illegal where I live.  Once it's put out as trash, it's considered anyone's property.  However, going through mailboxes is against the law.  Dumpster diving without permission is also against the law.

In hard economic times, I think if someone were to ask neighbors for the inserts they do not use, most people would go out of their way to assist someone in trouble.  I agree that people do extreme measures when they are faced with meeting basic needs.  I do believe, however, when you behave ethically and morally even in extreme situations of survival, that blessings will come your way that far surpass any gain you can get by behaving in an unethical and immoral way.

I read the police report. She honestly didn't think she was doing anything wrong. Quite a few of the women on that show need professional help. They have a very serious problem which Is called......HOARDING. Sure, If you're going to USE the Item then by all means get a few extras BUT If the stuff Is going to just sit there and collect dust why do you need 200 of It?

That's pretty bad and sad. I ask neighbors if they want their free shopper news type circulars because they now put coupons in there. Most people leave them on their sidewalks and don't want to be bothered by them. A couple dozen or more people just tell me to just take them every week. Thus, free coupons. I mainly use these to get items at CVS for virtually free, just pay tax.

The other day, I bought 2 bags of holiday M&Ms, a Shick Men's Razor, Quantum & a bath product, their brand ($7.99) and only paid $0.86!

And last night I bought 2 boxes of Hershey's Pot of Gold candy for $2.98. I could have got it for a lot less if I would have used my CVS extra bucks, but I generally save those on items that you earn the extra bucks to keep them rolling over. Plus it goes toward getting a free $10 gift card, which I can do 5 times this wk, so $50 in gift cards!

I saw the episode on Extreme Couponing that showed a lady taking newspapers from foreclosed empty homes. Just because someone didn't cancel their subscription doesn't mean you can steal it from them. Geez! I use coupons that I get legally and I save money here and there. I buy only what I need and if I have a coupon super. I don't use coupons to by junk. I have better things to spend my money on.

I don't know how they can do it in the grocery stores and how they can know where to go for the best deals. Well they do have groups and boards all over the internet to help them. Just seems like to much work to me.

CVS, I understand. If you buy only things that get extra bucks and use a coupon, you can keep rolling over the extra bucks. And at CVS, Rite Aid & Walgreens, they all allow you to use a manufactured coupon and their store coupons. But I just can't save that much in a grocery store. Last Christmas season, I walked out of CVS with $147 worth of items and only paid $4.50!

I find nothing wrong with the Extreme Couponers (the people, not the show, which promotes an idealized view without much helpful information). I wish I could do as well.

I have heard you can buy coupons off ebay.

I've also followed an "Extreme Coupon-er's" blog, where they donate hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise to shelters (rather than stockpiling or just letting the coupons go to waste) for what amounts to pennies from their pocket.

Those who think it's "cheating" don't know facts. Most coupons are never used. Most people who use coupons are middle and upper class - the lowest are the least likely to use them. Stores, unless it's store coupons or they're doubling or whatever, get all their money plus some back from the manufacturer. Obviously they put out coupons hoping you'll buy stuff you don't need or buy extra stuff while you're there or just TRY THE PRODUCT and like it, and it's a successful marketing ploy, or they wouldn't do it!

Learn to use the system and stop being so jealous of others.

For people who are sneering at those who "dumpster dive" or take coupons that will never be used (although I don't condone the stealing bit, I can see why they did it), you're saying you'd never reach into a trashcan if you saw a $20 bill sitting there? Because that's what they see - you throwing away money.

For those who get coupons and don't use them (not internet ones), why not donate them? There are military families living overseas, who can use those coupons on base and it really does help with their limited income. They even take expired coupons!

I do the coupon thing from time to time and it's very time consuming if you try and do it like the show does.  No stores around here allows you to use all those coupons!  Most of the stores allow coupons for four like items however, Walmart does let you use them but, they don't like you too and will nit pick you to death. After so many coupons a CSM has to be called to turn the key- When I do the coupons I do tend to go to Walmart just because they are cheaper then the other stores and I do save a lot but, nothing like coming out with free stuff or where I come out with money back.  I live in West Virginia where there isn't any jobs so, if I can save and get a lot of stuff even if it is the same items then I will because I will use them.  I never buy anything I wont use up.

Thanks to all who responded to this post. I usually won't post things from the news unless it really affected me very strongly. Most of your responses is right to the point but thinking about it usually, if a person gets way w/stealing, they are more likely to risk doing it again. It's I think like an addiction. If you got away w/stealing neighbors paper for a long time it's a hard habit to break. These also that rush a person gets after getting away with steal. lol, but there really is. I'm not so sure if the addiction is to coupons or getting the free stuff. My sister is the one who taught me how to get things virtually free at CVS, but I'm not as diligent as her. She reads me the riot act if she catches me shopping without coupons. I was visiting her a couple of months ago and had a toothache. I went to CVS with her, so I could get Orajel. She saw me with it and asked me what I thought I was doing. She said, wait I'll work out a deal so you can get it free. I said, my gums won't wait. But she figured it out in 15 mins and I got it for less than 0.50!

Wow! I think you need to take me shopping and give me some pointers.

:)  You would do a whole lot better with my sister lol, she's coupon mary on youtube.   I did buy about $150 worth of items last yr for the Christmas season and only paid $4.50! Everyone in the check out line looked at me as if I was a goddess, lol, I almost expected a round of applause, lol.  This year, I kept going back to both CVS stores in my town getting the Pot of Gold boxes of candy. The coupon machine in CVS kept spitting out $3 coupons off 2 boxes, and I had a bunch of $1 off coupons per box. So I was getting 2 boxes for $5 off. You're allowed to use a manufactured coupon along with a CVS coupon. That's how I was getting 2 boxes for $2.98. Needless to say, everyone I know got boxes of candy as one of their presents. I still have about 10 boxes on hand lol.

A couple of weeks ago they were offering Centrum Nutrium vitamins for 9.99 each. I missed it because they were sold out before I ever got a chance. Well during the holiday season CVS was giving out $10 gift card for buying $30 of select products, The vitamins were among them. So people would buy 3 of the bottles. Then the coupon machine was giving $5 off coupons, and there were manufactured coupons for $7 off, and there were some for $5 off. So depending on which coupon you used, you got $10-12 off the  9.99 vitamins. Buy 3, get a $10 gift card. So some people were just paying tax but some cashiers just zeroed out the customers balance.

I have a coupon blog and love saving money couponing.  What a lot of people don't know about Extreme Couponing is that they have been caught making deals with stores to allow the rules to be ignored for the shoppers featured in their episodes.  For example, Lowe's Foods had to release a statement admitting that their coupon policy would not have allowed the savings that were shown on an episode that was filmed at one of their stores.  They said that they did it because they wanted to appear coupon friendly but in hind sight realized it was misleading.

There is another woman who coupon bloggers have outed for coupon fraud.  The blogger community taped the show and then took screen shots of different scenes.  They proved that she purposely used coupons on items that they were not intended for by using a tactic of reading the UPC codes and knowing how to fool the registers.  This is a vulnerability that will be fixed with the new scanning technology used now with cell phones.

Coupon fraud is a felony and no laughing matter.   The show has drawn attention to the fact that couponing pays, but it has also gave honest couponers a bad reputation.  When the show features someone who purchases 90 bottles of pain reliever and uses 90 coupons, that is just not realistic, since most coupons now allow you to only use 4 of the same coupons per purchase.

I spend a lot of hours each week couponing, but most of it is blogging related to get information out.  Spending 10 hours in a store and hours at a register to get 100 of the same item is not realistic or something I want to do.

I think it's vile and vicious to destroy someone's good name for some coupons that everybody except the coupon people throw away. I think they make too much of it. If in fact they stole mail then they should be arrested that is a crime. :o :o :o

How sad and shameful. There must be an obsession.

Sorry I'm so late in replying.  I think I'd go shopping with you or your sister either one :)  :notworthy:

Tsk, tsk.  I didn't watch the Extreme Couponers show on TLC too often, but when I did I was absolutely disgusted the way they hoarded all of their purchases.  Absurd.  It's one thing to use coupons to save money, but when you're cheating the system and just trying to build up your stockpile for fun then that's just messed up.

Maybe those women have turned their couponing into a sickness? :angry7:

What?  Now that's insane.  I'm all for saving money but come on.  Maybe they didn't want to spend any money in ink or paper and figured just nabbing the neighbors would be ok.  Nothing like taking something to the extreme huh?

I have no problem with someone getting coupons that have been thrown away but flat out stealing your neighbors paper for them is wrong.

There is a balance in every thing and when you get out of control it often goes bad.

I am really into couponing..broke so it makes the food budget go a lot further.  But I use the internet, trade people for ones they need and I don't etc.  All legit ways of doing it.  A lot of the original stores that were on Extreme Couponing have made statements about the limit they now have on coupons, because of those greedy ones it is now harder on all of us to use our coupons.  ALSO A LOT OF STORES will not accept the coupons you print off of the computer.

I think these people are ridiculous. Some of them spend 40 hours a week to save $200??? Even a minimum wage job will pay more than that. Doesn't make sense... And stealing other peoples stuff to save money is wrong. They could have just asked their neighbors for the coupons. Ridiculous. No one needs 400 tubes of toothpaste anyway.
