Title: What do you think of dogs running loose in your neighborhood?
Post by: mall0271 on December 18, 2011, 11:55:11 pm
I am happy pet owner. I love my dog. She is my companion. I make sure she has shots and properly feed, etc. But when I take her out to walk her there are always loose dogs just running the neighborhood. That just really irritates me. I make sure my dog has a lease always. I know it is my responsibility to make sure she doesn't scratch or bite anybody. She is a sweet dog, but you don't know how they will react to strangers. What have other owners encountered? ???

I have a big problem with people letting their dogs run free. The all think their dogs will never cause a problem, but when I am walking my dog he does not like other dogs just running up to him. He gets very scared and he is just a very small dog. I have had dogs chase me to the point that I had to pick him up and run! I also when walking alone have had dogs chase me down the block barking. It doesn't matter is they are small or big if they are not friendly! My dog is friendly, but he is over protective of me and doesn't like dogs off of their leash around me at all. If they are on one he doesn't bark at all. But if you want you dog to run free then take them to a dog park! That is why they have them. It isn't safe for people or your dog. People speed and it could get hit. And you get introuble if your dog hurts someone and if your dog gets hurt because you were not taking care of it.

Letting dogs run free is a big problem. I know a lot of dogs that are outside dogs, and they are all tethered. There is a Shih Tzu in our neighborhood that attacked a person walking by, even though it was on a small leash.
Besides, even the nicest dogs can turn and attack a person and if they do that then you could be forced to put your dog down and pay fines. It's not worth the risk.

The owners of the dogs should get fine the maximum amount if their dog attacks other people, dogs, or cats and pay all medical expenses.

Dogs don't run loose in our neighborhood; they're pretty strict with the leash laws around here.  If there are leash laws where you live, call animal patrol and have them pick up the loose dogs.  Where I used to live, we had someone who let their large dog run about, charging at cars and people walking, including children going to/from bus stops, so I called animal patrol and had them pick the dog up.  Didn't see that dog off it's leash after that.   ;D

In the neighborhood? Yeah, that's dangerous to people AND the dog. In parks though? It never really bugged me. If the dog is off a leash and you see the owner, there's a 99.9% chance that it's friendly.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves! I swear my town has something against keeping their dogs fenced up, or on a leash, or inside, or anything requiring responsibility. It is ridiculous. There are dogs running all over town, most without collars, and I am shocked I haven't seen more laying dead on the street. It drives me crazy!

That's dangerous and just asking for an accident. In my city, the leash laws are pretty strict. If there's a loose dog we don't recognize, we warn our neighbors and call the local humane society. We don't want any kids getting hurt or anyone in the wrong place at the wrong time. I rarely see any strays though, it's usually just a golden retriever named Cody who turns into an escape artist whenever his owners leave.

I live in the country and it is sad to say there are some cruel people who just drop their dogs off to fend for themselves. I call the Humane Society as soon as I see one as at that point they are still a 'pet'. Once they have been on their own for some time it is more difficult to catch them as they revert to their ancestor wolf personality. I have 2 rescue dogs and most of the dogs my neighbors have are also rescued but we can't do it all. I simply don't understand how people can do this.

I'm okay with dogs, they'll usually shy away from you.
But cats think they own the place and will just stay out of arms reach; they I will shoot at.
Got a lot of rabbits in my neighborhood as well, digging up all sorts of things.

I feel for the dogs that I see running loose. Dogs are like children in that they need and depend on their owners to keep them safe. If you do not have the time to devote to keeping your dog out of harms way, then for the sake of the dog don't get one.!

I hate when people let their dog run loose. I know do not want to take care of the dog's poop, so they let the dog go outside without them.

I just love dogs. It hurt me when so many dogs are neglected when a owner has him or her. If I could take in the stray dogs that come around my house I would. But there no way you can do this. Dogs has the right to get everything they need in shots, food and shelter by their owner. It irritates me also to see so many stray dogs rooming around. To all animal owner keep your pet safe . Give there shot!!! :angel12:

I love dogs but get nervous if they are running loose. you never know how an animal may react to you...they may be frightened and bite or scratch even though they truly are a lovable and nice dog. Would you ever call animal control if you saw the same dog loose multiple times?

We have a leash law in my county, city.  I do not like to see dogs running loose in the neighborhood due to the harm that can come to them, namely traffic, and disgruntled neighbors wanting to kill dogs running loose and getting ionto garbage and etc.

Yes, dogs running loose in the neighborhood is not a good thing, especially if the owner is not around. I have a very well trained Akita and when I'm out working in the garage or gardening out front, she is not on a leash. BUT she doesn't leave her "space", ever, even when another dog passes by she just looks at them. She has boundaries and she just wants me in her sight. It's my property and she doesn't leave it, therefore, I'm comfortable with her not being on a leash. I've had this dog for 10 years, I know her. Someone passing by does not know my dog and I can see how they may be anxious so I do reassure them if they are freaking out.  It's not the dogs running around loose I get so upset about as it's the owners that *bleep* me off that don't take responsibility to "care" for their dogs. If they don't train their dogs or pay attention when walking them, they SHOULD be on a leash.

Oh, a PS here.... I Do have my dog on a leash when we are out walking. The boundaries are gone and that's when things unpredictable can happen. I am a responsible dog owner.

worse thing about loose dogs is their owners letting them crap all over your yard and not pick up the dog crap. there ought to be a crap law for abusive dog owners. atleast cats bury their droppings  :cat:

That is something that annoys me to no end.  I can't understand why some people even have pets.  We live in a neighborhood where its not tolerated much.   We have always had our dog on a leash when we go for walks and such.  I don't know why others don't do the same.

One of my cats got killed by dogs running loose back in 05 after Rita. I wanted to kill them, too. I know that sounds bad but I was very upset and didn't know who the owner was. There was a lot of broken fences in the neighborhood and I guess that's how they got loose. I was glad my little dogs were inside when they popped up.

I really hate when I see dogs running loose.  However, it is not the dog's fault, it is the owners responsability  to take care of their dogs. That means keeping them under control and contained on their property.  I just feel so bad for the dogs that I see running loose. There are so many threats to these dogs, and they cannot overcome them, all, unless they are lucky.

I love animals but I don't trust them, because you never know where they came from, as far as a abusive home or if they were confined or not. I believe people should keep up with their pets, which keeps the owner, the pet, and strangers safe.

Out in the rural areas people just dump them out. A shame, then they run wild. Attack the animal and can do great damage to farm animals. Also can become rabid it bit by some wild animals. I know, when i was a child one chased me and i was stuck up on top  of an rickety chicken coop. Thing God the neighbor heard me and shot it. Please, please keep your dogs at home.

I, too, take issue with owners that allow their dogs to run loose.  I have had dogs come on my property and attack my dog. When dogs run together they revert to a pack mentality and can take down even a large dog (mine was 125lb). Anyone who allows their dog or dogs out purposely to run is not a good or responsible owner to their pet or a good citizen of the neighborhood. I worry about what will happen to the dog(s) if they are turned in to the animal control, but also know that the safety of human beings and other pets ultimately has to win out in the decision.

We live in a smaller neighborhood and many people let their dogs go free and this is so annoying. The one dog down the street is always loose, the owners hardly ever take it in. I feel bad for the dog, because it is usually outside in the winter when it is cold.

The thing that annoys me is the dog usually runs into the street and barks at every car that goes by. In the winter time I have had to slam on my breaks and slid on the ice numerous times to try and avoid hitting the dog. That was almost worse, because it was scary to slide on the ice (our street is all downhill in the mountains).

I think if you do not love your dog enough to let it be safe from cars, not harm other animals, you should not be a pet owner.

Dogs should not be running loose in any neighborhood, it's dangerous for them.  I know people that have poisioned dogs that were always running loose into their yards, friendly dogs will get picked up and used as bait for dog-fighting, dogs get hit by cars, I know of people stealing dogs (dogs running loose, dogs sitting in cars with windows left way down, and they've stolen dogs from fenced-in yards by grabbing them over the top) and they sell them (especially now that times are tough for many) to labs for experimentations.  I've known people to shoot/kill dogs running loose on their property.  I even knew a neighborhood that had a person of a certain-unnamed nationality that would take his van and go around the neighborhood taking dogs running loose...he called it "grocery shopping"...he had various size "stands" in his backyard for different size breeds and a "pit" for cooking dog meat, he said doberman tasted the best.   LEASHES, SPAY & NEUTER.  There are no bad dogs...just bad owners.

I don't like too see them running loose, they can attack a person or small child. poop on your lawn and tear up things. On the other hand i hate to see a dog on a chain. If a person doesn't have a big fenced in yard for a large dog, they shouldn't have a dog . I have seen so many pets laying on the road because they were let run loose and were hit by cars.  Also living on a farm i have seen packs of dogs chasing the cattle and killing the calves ,  can understand when the farmers and ranchers shoot them.

About 20 years ago we did not think twice about letting our dog out. He was in and out all day. I see now how wrong it is. Their is no one to clean up after them and you do not know if they are going to sence the fear in some one and bite.

I had my car broken into one time, my back side window was broken and it started to do one of those famous Florida pour downs. I ran out to try and tape up the window and as I did this all three of my dogs ran out. A Rotti, a Jack Russ and one they now call a "designer breeds". Now I'm not saying that sometimes people dont just let there dogs run lose but accidents do happen and a lot of dogs are escape artist. So keep your head up and know your doing the right thing. To the people who just let there dogs run not from accident. I had three dogs. The jack and the designer made it back the Rotti didn't and if you truly love your dog you will stop letting them run free. That day I felt like my daughter had died and still do that was about 3 years ago. Hard lesson to learn.

No pun nor disrespect to your posted reply, but your dogs are more than likely leaving their feces on public property and others neighbors' lawns, and you don't have to clean it up I'm supposing. Thats a bit disturbing and shows a lack of care on your end for your dogs :crybaby2: I don't wanna be stepping in doggy doo on public property and my neighbors lawns on my walks and invites from neighbors onto their property and dragging it into my car and into my home or just having to clean it off of my shoes because the dog owner didn't clean up after their canine's mess outside. This ought not have to happen and one ought not have to pay attention to filth like this in society. God bless you.  :'( :angel11: ??? :P :-X :bs:

No disrespect to dogs and their owners, but where does 'love' and 'evolution' as far as 'a dog covering it's turds like cats do' come into play at some point and time for the dog itself?  C'mon dogs are a creation and gift from Heavenly Father and I believe are meant to evolve a heck of alot faster in the 'Toilet Department', but when? If a dog gets loose by accident, well it's an accident. But if people let them run free thats a different story. Shame on them and that goes for cat owners too. Anything can happen to those pets. They could be hit by a car, poisened, harmed by another animal or person, etc... People need to be proper animal owners. Besides that, where do they think these pets are doing there business but in other peoples yards? Just my opinion. :bs:

I am a owner of a standred yorkie who thinks he is a pitbull. I always have to keep him leashed when out because he will run up on any dog or person ,which is a very big problem for all involved. He wont bite or has never bitten or attacked another dog but the problem is he only goes off what he feels as running up on human, if they show they are scared he only thinks he tuffer . Just yesterday i was walking my dog with a friend and her dog when this pit came running out at us , i showed no fear and kicked the poop out of that sucker which luckily detered his progress towards our dogs. In short I think the owners should be fined very heavily for such neglect. I mean your not gonna let a child run a muck on streets without proper supervision, and my dog MAX is a family member.

I hate when people let their dog run loose. I know do not want to take care of the dog's poop, so they let the dog go outside without them.

We've lived in the same house for 36 years and have always had dogs and we've always tried to keep them in our fenced-in yard.  We did have an escape artist for close to 20 years and had to bail him out of jail a couple of times but his getting picked up by the pound was both embarrassing and costly.  He died a few years ago and the dog we now have in the yard is a good dog and doesn't try to climb out or dig under.  We do have people in our neighborhood who take their dogs for walks WITHOUT a lease and these dogs are always tormenting our dog thru the fence.  Then there are a number of dogs that run loose yet the pound never picks them up for whatever reason so yes, that does irritate me.

When I have to let them know over and over again, and the next day after I have told them the dog gets loose again, it's BS!!!! I have the exact problem that you speak of in my neighborhood! People just don't get it, it's like the pet is the least important thing on their mind, which to me means that they don't deserve to own  a pet at all. We live next to a busy highway and it makes me angry that its not even a thought in the owners mind when their pet runs loose.

Praise The LORD  :angel11: Now thats loving dogs 'running loose and free' in society  Pure harmony, no dog turds and no rabie bites to others(humans and other animals).  ;D

My family owns dogs and we keep them restrained.  We really do not appreciate other peoples dogs in our yard. I have small grandchildren and I do not trust the other dogs for safty.

I have a neighbor that does this. She let's him run loose and crap in the grass in front of our building. He doesn't bite, thank goodness because he always runs up to me when I'm outside. I think it's just so rude that she doesn't clean up after him.

Something that also is frustrating is when you live in a more open neighborhood without many fences. We do not own any dogs ourselves, but our neighbors do, and they let their dogs run free sometimes. They do not pay much attention to where their dogs go or what they do. So there is a lot of dog poop in our yard.

It is so frustrating to have to clean up dog poop in your own yard when you do not even have dogs. If we wanted dog poop in our yard, we would have our own dog.

Also, living in Colorado there are so many hiking trails and popular hiking trails. I love seeing dogs on the trails, but hate seeing all the dog poop on the trails. There are even the doggie bag stations at the start of the trail so people can pick up after their pets, but most do not, they are either too lazy or do not care. Almost worse yet is when people do pick up after their dogs but leave the bags on the trail. I have even seen where people pick up after their dog and tie the doggie bags to tree branches along the trail. If you are going to pick up after your animal, have the respect for the open space to take the doggie bag with you, so other people do not have to see it or deal with it.

I am so glad that you posed this question. I do not have any animals but I love them from a distance. I don't appreciate stepping in dog crap when i don't even have one, not to mention when it is in my grass that really drives me crazy. I am not scared of dogs but I don't appreciate them running loose either. Owners can say that there dogs are nice and sweet but they don't know how they may act around others. I respect anyone who respects animals & obeys animal laws, keeping them on a leash, keeping them immune and keeping them clean etc!

the same people who let their dogs run loose also let their kids run loose too, it is unsafe and quite frankly annoying

I'm against it but it also happens. My dogs actually got loose and killed a cat down the road. I think that accidents happen, but also it can be prevented if owners pay attention, train properly and have respect for other peoples feelings. Most people have problems that can be solved by approaching the person and discussing the issue at hand...

Dogs can honestly be annoying. They chew a lot of objects, sometimes use your floor as a bathroom, you have to take them for walks and they beg like a "dog"!

I PERSONALLY DO NOT LIKE SEEING DOMESTIC ANIMALS RUNNING LOOSE IN ANY NEIGHBORHOOD.I THINK ITS IRRESPONSIBLE,ITS JUST A WAY FOR THE OWNERS TO ACT IRRESPONSIBLE BY NOT PICKING UP AFTER THEIR PETS.

I like dogs. But I don't like them (or any other animal) running around loose.  They may be mistaken for strays and possibly pose hazards like biting people, pooping everywhere, don't know if they're well taken care of (fleas/ticks/diseases), etc.  Even if they're trained, something may spook them and may attack another person or animal.  Keep them on a leash when taking your dog for a walk!  And clean up after they poop!  :)

there is always this one lil dog always loose and sometime the dog runs in front of cars and barks at everyone. I hope this dogs owner takes better care of him. they pose a danger to small kids and themselves they may get by a car or something.

:bs:

No no no no no. Shame only on the canine owners  :bunny: Cats don't carelessly crap on your lawn and public sidewalks where you can or cannot notice it. Cats bury their feces.

Be nice if there were public cameras that catch dog owners that are walking their dogs and allowing their dogs crapping on public sidewalks and on neighbors' lawns.

They are indeed a bit annoying... I believe that with fierce dogs (eg. pitbull) come great responsibilities.... and cute doggies are not exempted. We should watch over our pets.... let's be responsible, caring and considerate citizens.  :peace:

I would prefer that dogs do not run loose in the neighborhood. If I am not familiar with an animal, it makes me pretty nervous to have it running up to me. A responisble person would likely have an animal on a leash for the animals and others protection.

Being a dog owner, the fact that other dog owners let their dogs run loose irritates me.You never know if the  dogs running around are immunized. It's scarry not only where my pet is concerned but also concerns me for the well being of my kids.

Well I know what you mean...way back when I had 3 cocker spaniels.  We had a fenced in yard.  Well our neighbors got a pup that was the worst behaved dog I'd yet seen.  This thing would run and hook it's legs over the fence and climb over.  Landing in our yard.  I was getting more and more irritated as this thing was getting into my yard treating my dogs like chew toys.  Than one day I came home from work and low and behold the dog was once again in my yard.  This time my dogs were in the house.  I grabbed a hold of the dogs collar (Which now they were using a choke collar) Walked her over to the neighbors.  There 3 young boys were home alone and I said you're dog was over in my yard again.  They all started arguing while the youngest of the 3...maybe 8 years old at the time.  Grabs a stun gun and aims towards the dog.  I let go, the dog took off and I was out of there.  It was sooooooo irritating.

Dogs off the leash can be really scary~you never know when they might run into another animal aggressive animal!  I knew someone who had a dog that was in their own back yard when a dog wandered into it and their dog killed it.  It was horrible and everyone felt horrible, but their dog was doing what it was supposed to, protecting their property.  If that other dog didn't wander away from home, it would still be alive!  You just have to make sure your dog doesn't get away!!! So sad.

I don't like to see them running loose . I believe they should be taken care of. I also believe if you can substantiate that the dog has no owner-- the Humane Society should be called.

I'm okay with dogs, they'll usually shy away from you.
But cats think they own the place and will just stay out of arms reach; they I will shoot at.
Got a lot of rabbits in my neighborhood as well, digging up all sorts of things.

Good thing my 5 cats catch rabbits, squirrels and snakes.
They are all fixed and do not spray, just come home to eat and get some loving before going to bed.

I have a pure breed Akbash, which is a Turkish dog, bred to guard livestock against coyotes, wolfs bears etc. She is never allowed to leave my property unless on a leash. There are many roaming dogs as well as coyotes in this area but they don't come near my place any more........Maggie likes to dis-assemble them.

I'm sure that it is not entirely the owners fault. Perhaps there is a hole in their backyard where the dog is able to escape from. I know that training certain dogs can be quite difficult. My dog actually runs loose sometimes. I wish he wouldn't though because it is quite embarrassing. I get tempted to play with the loose dogs.

If the dog runs loose, it is absolutely the owners fault.

Being a pet lover, I had to look up some photos/information on that breed because I had never heard of it before...some of the photos have the dogs almost looking like a large, white, longer haired labrador retriever!  The breed is gorgeous!!  They look like fun, loving dogs!  I bet your Maggie is a great dog!!

Yeah Maggie is often mistaken for a pure white Lab. What's amazing to me about her is that when she is in the house she is very laid  back almost lethargic, lays right at my feet and refuses to move(even to me), however when shes out side she's "on the job" with high energy and constantly alert to any perceived threat to my livestock.

I love dogs, but I'm terrified of stray dogs...especially rottweilers or pit bulls...even though I have had both breeds as pets.
