I knew I was/am smarter than my mom.  Today technology is racing ahead so fast, most parents can't keep up with what's second nature for the kids.  ???

They may be smarter with the new technology but when it comes to common sence they are lacking and its not all teenagers but a lot of the once I come across.  The trick with children is teaching them when they are young and they learn the deep respect for you when they become teenagers.  But when I was a teenager I thought my parents where to strick at times and had double standards.  My brother and I are only 10 months apart and they would let him do things and go places but I couldn't they said it was because he was a boy and I was a girls.  But we all have times that we are or think we are smarter than our parents wouldn't all you agree.

There is more to intelligence than just being able to work a computer. Like common sense. I've known many people who were technology savvy but were complete idiots when it came to common sense.

Indeed there is.  There are quite a few teens, (and younger kids), who are very proficient with computers but, lack a more broad-based intelligence.

I am not a teenager but I wasn't one long ago. The thing that always kills me about posts like these is that older adults, by asking "Why do teenagers think they're smarter than their parents?" seem to imply that when they were teenagers, they were perfect and respectful at all times. However, I've learned from my own parents and many others out there that, while times were different, teenagers were certainly not angels in prior generations!

The teenage years are a time when you're meant to question the life you live. It's the time when you discover who you are and what you want to do with your life. I think one of the major flaws in parents is that they assume that THEY are always right and there's no alternatives to their narrow-minded thinking. Teens aren't wrong if they think differently than their parents. In fact, parents are wrong if they think their teens should think exactly like them. It leaves no room for individuality or growth (and there's nothing worse than a momma's boy/girl!  :P)

I guess I was very lucky. My daughter was a really good teenager. She did ask for things I couldn't afford and I would tell her "you can't get blood from a turnip" and she didn't get it then lol but she sure as hell does now !

MY two teenagers may think they are smarter than me but they don't vocalize it because we brought them up to be respectful and humble.  I have only raised my hand to one of them once and that was because he was harming an innocent creature during a fit of rage and I knew that speaking to him in a reasonable manner wouldn't have accomplished immediate results needed to leave the creature unharmed.  I consider my kids to be brilliant but they do realize that a different kind of wisdom comes with age and that there is a seemingly infinite amount of knowledge to be uncovered.

These days? kids have been thinking they're smarter than their parents forever. It's true to an extent. Book smarts that is. Not smart on a maturity level though. That's only becuase when you're in school you're learning it right then but after we forget some of those things learned.

In some ways kids are smarter then their parents but overall parents know so much more about life and the real things that matter

Yes, thank you. It wasn't too long ago that I was a teenager and all I wanted to do was just be an adult. And a lot of the time I was just frustrated, with a lot of things.

Honestly no I didn't. I was/am damn smart and there's a lot I did/do know but I was taught enough respect for my elders that I never assumed I knew it all. To bad a lot of kids today aren't taught the same thing.

It's just a coming of age thing I think.  Didn't we all think we were smarter than our parents at some point?

Quite honestly, most of the time it is just pride and rebellion.  Often it was role modeled to them through their parents interactions.

Let me give you this perspective.  I did not know more than my parents, even when I though I did.  I was mad at the way they had the double standards. my brother could do anything he wanted and i could not, just because he was a boy and I was a girl.  But even with all of that, I was tought to respect my elders and my house, I would never raise my voice or challenge my parents, (it wa better to just do it behind their back).  Now that i have kids (2 teenagers 18 and 13) i have given them a little more freedom than what I had, but they know how much they can push.  My 18 years old started College this Fall and I told her that all I asked was for her to finish school before she decide it to have kids and be crazy in life not to do something she might regret later, like gasp, getting pregnant at 18 to live her life the fullest with reponsability and good health, she tought I was the craziest mom out there, but then she came to me a few weeks ago and said, "I see why you gave me that advice my friend had to quit College because she got pregnant, her parents kicked her out and now has to work to pay her bills.

Teenagers may think that they know more than us, but we did too, but at the end of the day it all has to do with how we raise them that matters.

Sorry but that girl has some sorry *bleep* parents. Why kick her out and make her have to quit school because she's pregnant. I'd never do that to one of my kids. I'd tell them they may now have to take less classes/hours so that they can also work to pay for things the baby needs and that child care while at school/work was their responsibility but I wouldn't kick them out.

They may be smarter when it comes to technology but when it comes to common sense...they have absolutely NONE!   I know this because I have a 16 year old that is exactly that way!  I try to explain to him that technology is great but common sense is something you have got to have to survive in the real world!
