Title: Employers asking for facebook users password at interview.
Post by: ladycasshmere on March 22, 2012, 12:06:49 pm
Have you guys heard. I was watching the news and some employers are asking for facebook passwords at job interviews. Would you give up your facebook, twitter or myspace password for a job?

No. That is an invasion of privacy not only for facebook but also if you use that same information for other activities online such as bank or email password. I certainly wouldn't work for a company like that if I could help it.

nah, seems like they have enough of my information seeing as how they have my social, address, and work history ready at a click of button.

I heard that on the radio this morning and the company who asked for it changed there policy so now you don't have to give it to them but you do have to log on in front of them so they can look thru it. Facebook is backed by the FBI now its like the new background check. That is a big no no. And you can never really get rid of your Facebook , they keep everything you put or take off on back up. Not cool.

I never heard of that before. I would ask the interviewer why it is necessary to give our passwords and what does it have to do with the job. Criminal background check and past references are fine, but snooping around a person’s social network site(s) is unprofessional, I think.  :angry7:

I'm sorry, but how is that relevant?  I mean, why not ask for their password for their online bank account so you can make sure they aren't involved in illegal activities.  Or ask to see my home computer so as to make sure I don't visit bad sites when online.

Plus, what's to prevent them from logging in and posting things to get me in trouble?  If anything, they are just opening themselves up to something bad.  I mean, they already get your Social Security number, generally a bank account number if you use direct deposit, and a lot of personal information.  I mean, what if you had your parents on Facebook.  Someone could figure out your mothers maiden name and other personal information like first pet's name, first school, high school mascot, etc that people use as passwords or at least, security questions.

Also, why can't they just view my profile like everyone else does?  I've never had a friend say "I'll only be your friend if you let me surf your Facebook account."  I mean, yes, some people post dumb things online like underage people posting pictures of them drinking (without parents around).  But why would you place something bad on Facebook.  And, if my employer isn't going to hire me cause I play Farmville or take pictures when I'm on vacation, then I really wonder.

That does seem like a bit much. Why do they need the password anyway? Couldn't they just look at your facebook page and see what you are about. I suppose you  could log in during the interview to prove it. I don't know...its very strange and a little scary. I know that they want to know exactly who they are hiring, but I think going into your personal accounts is going too far. This is coming from a conservative, btw. This is one of the many reasons why I outright refuse to get a facebook account. Its not just a page where you connect with your friends anymore, its become a part of your identity for all the world to see. In order for me to get a dang coupon I have to like someone on Facebook. If I want to enter a contest, I have to participate on facebook. Once in church they printed out facebook pages and showed them off to show what the teen class was really like. Some of those teens kinda got what they deserved, I admit, they were jerks, but still Facebook is growing too powerful for my tastes. In order to have certain jobs you have to use Facebook.
Before anyone comments, know that I'm not against the creators of this program. They created a social networking site thats popular, and thats fine. I just don't like what society has done with it. Next everyone will have microchips in their fingers to identify them or something, so that everyone can know your entire history in
a quick scan. Back to the topic: I disagree and I'm scared of the future if this type of behavior continues.

I don't understand where it became ok for any potential place of employment to think it was ok to ask for a personal password to access a personal account. I can understand them looking you up for their own curiosities-even though to me that is irrelevant to your business career. But to ask to be able to access your account for a job you don't even have is absurd.

I dont understand why they would ask for such things.  Mostt people with a facebook account have a low security rating on their account.  Companies have the opportunity of getting access to your information without you even knowing about it!

They shouldn't ask for password's to your personal account's! If it's a company profile account related to the job then it's ok! I wouldn't give them my password's to my own personal account's!

No i would definetly not give out my password for any job. 1st thats invasion of privacy 2nd I believe thats against the law. Im quiet sure but it definetly sounds illegal to ask a person for any of their passwords for anything at a job interview  :bootyshake:

It's not specifically against any current laws however, obtaining such passwords could give someone access to other things, (like bank accounts), which could lead to illegal activities.  Some lawmakers are supposedly formulating bills pertaining to the matter but, these haven't made it into law as yet.

I find this piece of information outrageous.  First, this is a real invasion of privacy for anyone applying for a job. Second, what business is it of theirs?  These social sites have, unfortunately, had problems brewing in the wings for a while. It has become a better idea to stay away from anything that posts anything personal about you. Even the business sites where you advertise yourself, resume, skills, etc. have become places to avoid putting up your information. This is unfortunate as it is such a good way to network. However, like many venues where personal information is posted, it has become dangerous to do it. Thanks for posting this info!

There is no way I would give my employer my password for facebook, not that I have something to hide but that's just crossing the lines of privacy.

So very strange.  I guess it makes sense because everyone is so... open on the internet, so employers want to get a good idea about their future employees.  But it's still very strange and invasive.

Why would they ask for that?  It really is not their business!  Were I work, we didn't have internet access anyway, save a few terminals, why would I want my boss to know my facebook password?

Ridiculous.  You would have to be incredibly desperate for a job to give up that information.  I couldn't imagine asking someone for that information to begin with.

That's just it; there are numerous people who are that desparate for work and do, (however reluctantly), give up such information. One might imagine that, if they need the job that badly, they'd do so.  I'd have to check with an employment attorney to establish whether such would constitute doing so under duress, (and any legal measures which would follow from that).

Ditto!!!!
Not sure that is even legal.  And for sure, not appropriate..that is an invasion of privacy.
If I have anything I don't want people seeing other than my friends, then I use the privacy settings accordingly.  I don't hide much, I have nothing to hide, if an employer wants to see what I have on my facebook then they can go on and look at it the same way anyone else would.  And if they can't see something I have set as "friends only", then they need to send me a friend request...be up front and all,,,but asking for a password to an account is way out of line.

Fair would be asking for their Facebook password, which they'd have no more incentive to trade for yours than they would to give you their banking password, (in the instance that you were the job applicant and they are the ones vetting applicants).

I would not give up my password to facebook or twitter.  Not that there is anything to hide on there but that is private why would I want everyone I work with know my business.  If they want to know if I am a good person they could do a crimanal back round on me which I have had done once.  Thats all they need in my opinion to make sure I am a good person.  That other is just an invasion of privacy.

I would never give my password up for a job--no matter what job offer there is. Some people use Facebook for SOCIAL reasons--for leisure/pleasure! They should never try to mix business with pleasure, it's just a bad idea!

Hell no.  :o That's got to be illegal.  That's worse than asking about your relationship/family plans.  Why would they need the password anyway?  Are they planning on stealing your identity?  Googling someone and doing a background search should be enough.

I already said my piece about the original post, but does anyone else think sites like Facebook and Twitter are becoming too involved in everything?  I know it's because of all the people that visit it, but it's like you don't exist if you don't have a Facebook account any more.

It seems like everything nowadays recommends (or requires in some instances) that you log in with Facebook.  So, someone hacks my Facebook account and not only to they have access to everything posted on Facebook, but also all the sites you used it to log in with, which most likely are listed on your profile as well.  Weren't we always told to use different passwords for sites.  Well now it seems like we are all going back to using one password to protect all the sites we use.

I mean, with the employers look at your Facebook account, they could also see that you use other sites or that you use a specific car insurance brand or whatever.  Plus, my family owns a business and I occasionally help with hiring and we aren't allowed to ask how old they are despite the fact generally high school/college students apply.  Doesn't forcing them to show you their Facebook kinda defeat that thing?  Or possibly, sexual orientation or other personal things that aren't really related to how well you can handle the job?

there is no way I would give them that information. I see no need for them to have my password.

The solution is obvious; don't use social networking sites if you're applying for a job.  Delete any you already have before applying.

That's ridiculous and I would tell them so. That's like asking for my computer password or bank account password, not only is it personal it's also against the terms of service. Why would they need the password anyway? Would they be posting? Either they should ask to make your profile public (not so tech-savvy are they?) or they should stop requesting such stupid things in the first place. I would tell them I would like a key to their safe as well as the security code to their household in exchange.
