Have anyone use Magic Jack device? I heard you will never pay monthly bill again. No computer required. Free local and long distance call. I never use it, kind of scare to try it. I heard you don't even have change your old home phone #

I have a few friends who use magic jack as their home phone. The old version you have to attach it to your computer usign an usb cable, but the computer must remain on in order to make or receive calls. The new version does not need a computer, but you need to have a router in which you connect the magic jack plus and your computer does not need to be on at all. ;D

I dont haev one, but we have a friend with one, and it seems pretty annoying. I dont know if it is the device or if it is her computer, but it drops calls, gets super staticy, etc.

I thought about getting Magic Jack, but been hearing mixed reviews on it

i have heard of magic jack but have not used it. Don't know anyone that has one.
-
thanks very much for your answer :)

Sounds like I will avoid that one.
-
I've heard of it but don't really know anything about it other than what's said in their ads. I don't know how exactly all of it would work though. Don't know anyone that has one or has had one. Most people these days don't even seem to have/use a home phone, it's all about cell phones now I guess.

I don't have the newer Magic Jack but I do have two of the original with plenty years of service left on them. The Pros to Magic Jack is the fact for very little money you have a spare phone number and voice mail. The con is nobody can hear you. If you actually answer the Magic Jack call you can hear the person talking but they can not hear you, and if you call out it is the same. For the original model you do need internet and it plugs into your PC. I love my Magic Jacks for the voice mail it provides. I do not have an actual landline anymore but for calls I use my cell phone.
On an unrated note I found Magic and Jack the founders little girl's two Yorkie's cute.
I have heard about it, thought about getting it, etc. However, I decided to try Ooma instead because I know someone who has it. I bought mine through Buy.com in the FusionCash mall. It arrived yesterday. I am still waiting for the cash back to post to my account.
I've stress tested it. It is hooked up to my cable modem and sends the internet signal to my router- though I could put my router first. I called a cell phone and a land line (though not at the same time) while running two netflix movies and surfing the net to see if the call quality would go down. No dropped calls, cutting out, breaking up, etc. I guess my voice sounded a little "tinny" to the people on the other end, but they sounded normal to me. It is still VOIP.
The cons: you have to pay for the Ooma device up front.
The pros: you only pay a few $ per month for service (about $3.70 where I live), get tons of features for free (including long distance and voicemail), can choose your phone number or port your existing phone number, and you don't have to have it connected to a computer.

I had a magic jack. It worked pretty good considering it hardly cost anything. Sometmes the person on the other ends words were robotic sounding...but my computer wasnt the great either.

my husband has seen the commercials and wants one,,, :bunny:

I have heard of the magic jack but never have purchased it. My daughter had it, the one you plug in you PC. It did not work so good. It is a great idea if it would work right. Maybe someday they will get the bugs out of it and then I will get it. Would save me alot of money and in this day and time we need to save as much as we can. May everyone have a great day and may God bless each of you and keep you safe. I am on vacation this week and I am going to take a road trip tomorrow. Will be nice to have to some to rest and get things done for a change.

Here goes, I'm new.. I've heard of that magic Jack device and I'm scared to try it also. Do you think they would give you money back if it doesn't work after you've already opened the package?

My Aunt and Uncle have the Magic Jack and it works fine for them. I remember when they first got it hooked up it took a couple of weeks for them to get it all working right - They were trying to keep there number but I guess there are some steps to take to do that and they missed those steps. I bought a unit of my own just over a month ago. We're moving and I thought it would be a cost effective way to get phone service out in the stix. I'll try and remember to let you all know how it works for me.
-
We have one, purchased a few months ago. It works ok, not the greatsest, though. I guess for the money, it's a good buy. It is the older version that you have to plug into your computer. That's the only thing i don't like is that you have to have your PC on in order to make or recieve calls. I wish I knew they were coming out with the new version where you don't need to hook it up to your computer, I would have bought that one instead. O'well.

sak4kat: Did they realize there is an additional fee of $19.95 if you want to keep your existing number? It might be too late to tell them/too late for them to change it back, but thought I would add this info.
A huge drawback, for me anyway, is if you lose power, you have NO phone. I need to be accesible 24/7 to my hospital and my patients, so I will most likely never do away with my landline. I need it [landline] also when I have no chance to keep my cellphone charged/working and many people do NOT realize that cell towers, signals can also be screwed in a power outage. The magicJack Plus sounds better than the original, but it isn't worth the risk for me. ;)
-
I have had a Magic Jack for years and last year upgraded to the Magic Jack Plus and kept my old one just for voice mail. If you are worried about power outages, you can have it call any other number when they happen, but it's so rare that it lasts more than a few minutes I don't let it bother me. I hate to be the one who pops any bubbles, but land lines fail too. I have had a few times when static garbled the conversation, but it only lasts a few seconds and I just ask the other party to repeat themselves with no big deal. Since it only costs me $2 a month, I can put up with a little glitch now and then.
-
I used it some years ago, and it was definitely worth the price. It would sometimes drop calls but you couldn't beat the price. I haven't heard about the new one that can be used without a computer, so I will definitely check that out!

Thanks for that bit of information but indeed it is to late. They've had magic jack for a couple of years now. I remember it being a hassle for them to contact everyone with the updated number.

I don't think I'll try that magic jack thingy. Sounds like its not very reliable.

i heard of majic jack its very cheap

i knew someone who had the old one he used it afew times never complained about it

I am so glad you posted this topic! I have investigated Magic Jack a few times and could never get decisive enough answers to get all my questions answered. Your post on this topic has provided just the opportunity I was looking for. All of the other members that have responded to your posts have given lots of information on the trials and tribulations, success and limitations, and hardware requirements of the product. I now have answers to most of the questions I have had in trying to decide if this is a good alternative solution to phone service. Thank you so much!

i thought about using magic jack myself but couldn't since I do not have internet myself I am using my neighbors internet to do these surveys.

How many answers does it take to justify $2 a month? Just buy one and see for yourself.

I use it but I have the one you use a computer with I like it you only pay once a year. I have had it I think about 4 years. The one I have the computer has to be on to use it.
-
We've been very happy with ours. I was on the fence about it for a long time, but after reading OldBuddy's posts in another MagicJack thread I finally got it a few months back. The installation and registration literally took less than 5 minutes, and we've never had a problem with it.

My sister uses Magic Jack in her home and it works but she does have a lot of problems with it. My parents use to have it also .... both I am speaking of is the old type that has to have the computer on. It slowed my Dad's computer down so bad that it wasn't worth having.... After Dad passed away mom has done away with that and just has the regular land line. I have been tempted to try the newer version but haven't so far.
-
I don't know much about the new Magic Jack, but my dad had the old one and it worked great. On occasion there would be some interference with the connection or something, but for the price it is well worth it. If you don't want to pay $15-$25 a month for a landline phone, then Magic Jack is a wonderful alternative. It only cost like $20 a year. Definitely worth it to me. My husband and I were talking about the possibility of us getting it for our house just in case the kids need to make an emergency phone call or in case something happens with our cell phones.
-
I have heard about Magic Jack, but never tried it and would like too but afraid to try it. I wish I knew someone who use it because it really would be a cost saver and we can save, save on the phone bills.
-
yes but i never tried it
-
I have used magic jack.. Voice quality is good and for one year you pay just 20 bucks. All US and Canada is free..

What are you afraid of? I guarantee it's not going to bite a chunk out of your arm every time you use it. I have lost more than $20 playing around online so many times I lost count, it's not a big deal with all the free money lying around waiting to be grabbed.
-
i have heard of it but never tried it. i wouldnt have a problem with the computer being on all the time i never turn it off just the monitor my son said to do it that way the computer will last longer so far no problems :)
-
@sherryfan - I have the MagicJack myself. You're thinking of the MagicJack Plus which was introduced this year I believe. I have the regular one which hooks up into the computer (requires a computer) and haven't payed a home phone bill for the past 2 years. I also bought the $70 unlimited for 5 year plan....so I'll be saving a LOT on landline service. You can also port your old phone number to MagicJack...I didn't do that...I received a new number because I didn't have a landline before. I'm debating if I should get the MagicJack Plus because I won't have to worry about my computer being on all the time.

I wanna try it also but i would need to find a better internet price cause now days with all these bundles u cant get a good price on something unless its bundled....i wanna try the new magic jack cause my bill with phone and internet is about 60 bucks and 40 of it is for internet.
-
Misplaced my Majic Jack, because of the storm. Wonder if my number is gone as well. This will give me a reason to upgrade to the newer one. I have something cheaper then Majic Jack but only from my PC. So the new Majic Jack will be good for anywhere. I also like having another phone number.
-
I use Magic Jack Plus and it has been wonderful thus far. I never thought I would have a land line again, but this one is wonderful and it's $50 a year.
-
Magic Jack is great especially if you have family abroad. Since it connects to you computer USB and runs VoIP it's a free call.
-
I had the one hooked onto my computer. I didnt like it. When I was online I wouldnt have a problem unless I made a phone call or recieved one. They have a new addition out for it now. It doesnt plug into the computer. i dont know too much about that one.
-
i have seen it on tv and wondered about it, but lately havent seen it advertised. no matter what they say on tv dont believe it lol. you can check it out on consumer report before you buy it.
-
I've wondered about them for a long time and appreciate all the feedback. I think I"ll wait a little longer and see how the new one turns out. Keep the feedback coming.

The new one is the MagicJack+ and it works great too (I have both of them). If nothing else, where can you find a voicemail system that will email you when a message comes in to let you listen without touching your phone and get it for $2 a MONTH?
