Title: hotdogs for dinner for how many days in a row?
Post by: dansazz on July 13, 2012, 08:56:33 pm
I have done it before, and most likely will do it again. Eat Hotdogs for dinner to save money. It gets real old after awhile. But I guess I could mix it up with ramens, or rice, or something else real cheap.

Cereal, sandwiches and some bulk items are other cheap alternatives. The key is to buy things that have multiple servings for one low cost.

Spaghetti, chili, a big pot of homemade soup can be stretched for days.  Make a big pot and put portions in containers and freeze some of it.  Most supermarkets have a section for fruits and veggies about to go bad.  I have found cheap deals in that section and the food is still edible.

Dried beans cooked in the crockpot cost even less than hot dogs per serving and provide a good source of protein, fiber and carbs, particularly if combined with a grain like cornbread to make a complete protein.  Eggs are another low cost per serving protein.  Soups made from leftovers always go along way.  Do an internet search for low cost meal ideas yields lots of alternatives.  Also use your internet to view ads for grocery and drug stores in your area to plan your meals based on the specials - saves gas, time and money.  Groceries can be a major expense so it can be challenging but is usually one of the first areas I look at when trying to budget.

Try using coupons  ;D that can save you money too.

Potatoes are cheap too. Maybe a baked or microwaved potato with chillie, sounds good to me  :P

Beans and rice will go a long ways, toward filling you up. A half pound of ground round in a pot of beans for chilli will feed a family for a couple of days instead of hotdogs. Use a can of canned veg&beef soup your rice makes a good meal and cheap.  Lots of ways to cook cheaply just look around. Or maybe learn too cook.

I'm used to having hotdogs about 3-4 times a week sometimes. I make macaroni with hot dogs, sometimes slicing the hot dogs into the macaroni and putting ketchup and pepper on them. My son loves it, as well as my husband. We will have chili dogs, fried hot dogs, boiled hot dogs......lol. You can get creative with hot dogs....lol  ;D

My husband likes pizza, so we find ourselves eating pizza about everyday, but that gets expensive after awhile.  :P

Whole chicken in the crock pot! It cost about $4-$6 and can feed my family of 4 for 4 meals. Add fresh fruit or veggies, rice, beans and it could feed you pretty good for not too much.

Yes I agree and also. To answer ?? pork n beans are good with chopped hot dogs and also doggies in a blanket....crousants rolled around hotdogs with some cheese also in middle. My son loves hotdogs so I mix it up for him. Hotdog and overeasy egg sandwich is my fav. Take a slice of bacon wrap it around a hotdog is good.grilled cheese and hotdog sandwich is good. Lol I cant tell how many ways I have to come up with for my kid so its like a diff meal but the same 1 ingredient (hotdog) mixed with others. I keep trying to get him to eat other things but also so sometimes I make it like a challenge lol.

I never had hot dogs on consecutive days and I hardly ever do this with my lunch and dinner in general as I need variety. I only find breakfast as an exception as I'm more tolerant of repetition (cold cereal sometimes a few days in a row), but even then I try to spice things up a little.

Hotdogs can be used is so many ways and combining them with other food stuff.  Use your imagination and you can come up with some nice meals using hotdogs.

You can also fix ramen noodles and not put the seasoning packet in and drain the water off and put soy sauce on the noodles.  Or get a can of the white variety of spag sauce and mix with noodles that are drained.  Some grocery stores make some kind of a slaw (I am sure you can find the receipe online somewhere) with ramen noodles.  I tried it at the store and didn't like it so I wouldn't suggest it to much. lol.  But a lot of people like it.   You could also google ramen noodle receipes and probably come up with more ways to use them that are cheap.  I have done the soy sauce thing and like that really well.  Good luck.

Fried hot dogs?  How do you do that?  Sounds kind of interesting.  So does the mac and hot dogs...well minus the ketchup. lol  I love chilli dogs.

Only bad thing about the dinner choices mentioned here, including hot dogs, is that for the most part they're not healthy.

Had a friend who could well afford better meals die with eating cold cuts and hot dogs every day as a contributing factor. And another who made over $100k a year, die due to a bad diet. All young men, younger then me. You don't need to eat meat, you can get protein from other sources. I say that as a former vegetarian and vegan. You can make the center of your meals vegetables. Then add combinations for protein like beans and rice, but there are many more combinations so you don't get bored. I look for deals, believe it or not I went to one store the other day and found whole chicken legs for $0.49 per pound. Nothing was mentioned about it in the paper, just a spot sale. And I went to a place called Corrados they had extra large bags of vegetables and fruit for $2.00, plus whole chickens for $0.89 per pound and whitings for $1.79. I did all the initial comparison shopping and location finding from my computer.

Try hot dogs with spaghetti or macaroni. That tastes really good. You could try hot dogs with ramen and cheese instead of the packet that comes with the ramen. You could also go traditional and have hot dogs and beans but don't forget your veggies even frozen veggies are better than no veggies. :)

This is good advice in this post.  I eat meat myself, but I prefer vegetarian alternatives.  You could try buying veggie burgers (these offer more protein) or tofu.  Instead of ramen noodles, eat shirataki noodles.  Since shirataki noodles are made from soybeans, they naturally have no flavor.  But there are recipes (http://shirataki-noodles.recipesilove.com/) online for you to try out.  Eating healthy can be expensive but it benefits your health in the long-run.  It's also a lot cheaper than eating out.

Sometimes, when ground beef is too expensive at the grocery store.  It costs $10-$15 for a family pack of ground beef at my favorite grocery store.  To add meat to my beans, I sometimes go to the 99 cent store and purchase 2 saugages ( 1 pack) for 99 cents, cook them, chop them up and add to my cooked beans.  Another way I get meat, is to go to a local meat market and buy my ground beef by the pound, for $3.69 a pound.  Sometimes, when my money is low, I only buy a half a pound of ground beef.  I usually use my ground beef to make taco meat.  I can get taco seasoning for 3 or 4 packs for $1.  The taco shells can be purchased for 1 box 66 cents or 2 boxes for $1.  I get my lettuce and tomatoes from the 99 cents store.  I usually keep taco sauce, from Jack in the Box or salsa on hand.  Then, I use the taco meat to make tacos.  Whatever is left over is used to make nachos.  I guess, I could use the left over taco meat in my beans?

You can add pork and beans to your weiners.  Cut up the weiners and add to your pork and beans.   Voila, you have beenies weenies.  If you price a can of beenies weenies, it usually cost more than what you paid for 1 pack of weiners and 1 16 oz. can of pork and beans.

I like hot dogs every now and again but don't think I could eat them for a solid week or more.  I say that, but of course if you have no choice, you do what you have to.  I like ramean noodles too but couldn't eat them for an extended period either.  Now chicken, I probably could eat indefinitely but only if its the white meat; don't like dark meat at all on chicken or turkey.  Used to eat a lot of tuna in water and that was pretty cheap but I got burned out on it and rarely eat it now.

Probably from all the preservatives and other unnatural ingredients in the meat.  Plus, pork is the worst thing you can eat in this world.  If you are a believer, you would know to avoid this type of "food" like the plague! Pigs don't even have sweat glands, so the toxins are retained even after being slaughtered.  Not to mention, it is very fattening as well.

I don’t eat hot dogs because they are processed food. Someone even mentioned about ramen noodles. I don’t recommend them because they are coated with wax. Long term consumption of processed foods or ramen can cause serious health challenges. Instead of saving money, we become ill. We end up paying most of our hard earned dollars to doctors.

I prefer to buy bulk items like somen and soba noodles (up to 3 lbs), and brown rice (25 lbs) which lasted me a very long time. On the side I just buy a variety of vegetables, tofu, fruits, and fresh herbs. I also make my own bread which saved me a lot of money too. Very easy on the budget.  :)

Hot dogs and ramen noodles are good examples of processed foods to avoid.  Ramen flavor packets have MSG, another good thing to avoid.

There's a lot of good advice here on healthy, economic meal choices.

Personally I'll make up a thick and chunky marinara sauce in my crockpot and serve it over whole wheat noodles.  I like eggs for breakfast, but if I need to stretch them out I'll make up some pinto beans, in the crockpot, with small chunks of seasoning bacon, garlic, cumin, liquid smoke, hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce, then dress them with chopped raw onion, shredded cheese, hot sauce and a fried egg on top.  For variety I'll sometimes make bean burritos.  A big crockpot full of homemade soup can be comforting as well as cheap.  I'll save the liquid from things like canned mushrooms, or steamed veggies, in a freezer container and use that for stock, add the pulp from the juicer, then add what ever fresh ingredients and voila, comfort food.

There is a hot dog diet out there where you lose five pounds in a week of eating nothing but hot dogs!  I have also tried the Mayo clinic diet (the best at losing twnety pounds in two weeks), the ice cream diet for three days, the soup diet for a week and the potatoe diet for a week.  Hot dogs are probably your cheapest bet but the least healthiest.  I stopped by the grocery store today and picked up four chicken *bleep*, a box of rice, bag of vegetables and sriracha sauce which is a more balanced approach to dieting and comes out to about a dollar a serving...it just takes a little extra time to prepare.  It is somewhat tastier as well.

Casseroles are also a good alternative and you could usually get ingredients pretty cheap. You can cook the casserole and than separate it into servings and freeze them until your ready to eat them, then just reheat and walla!  :)

I have hot dogs for all 3 meals, I usually put fresh veggies (onions, peppers, cucumbers, et al.) on them as well. Sometimes with chilli. I don't get tired of them... ever

Save a ton of money on my food bill. I do eat out also and other things.

I really like hot dogs and had quite a few meals off of them myself lately too.   ;D

They are delicious, quick and easy to make. They are dirt cheap at ALDI's for the chicken and pork kind. 0.75 for regular, 0.99 for jumbo. Buns are just 0.89 cents and the fixins like ketchup, mustard and relish are pretty cheap too.

I prefer meijer's brand, but they are more expensive since they come in the jumbo pack for 3.89. But worth it if you get them for the taste to me.

Does anyone else on here love the hotdogs with plain potato chips combination? I love to eat hotdogs with potato chips. Hot dogs with french fries aren't bad either!

You didn't mention if you had ANYTHING ELSE in the house to eat. If that's all you have, you just eat them until they are gone...

Hot Dogs and Beans are an american's meal lol but it has to be Ball Park for me, my friend can eat that everyday and twice on Sunday but he fries his hot dogs which I like mine boiled, you can have it on a hot dog roll or chopped up the hot dog and put it in with the beans and another trick with the hot dog someone turned me onto was you know sausage and gravy over a bisquit she would substitute the sausage with a hot dog it's not bad when you need to stretch your money lol

You would be better off with beans. Hot dogs are not good for you. Make a big pot of red beans or lima beans instead.

I absolutely love pinto bean soup and my husband usually fixes it for my every week.  I can get 3-4 meals and it's really cheap.  Tonight, I'm having bean soup and he's having chicken and noodles left over from last night.

Nothing wrong with hotdogs, just mix in some other stuff. ;)
