Title: My son wants to be Robin for Halloween, but I do not !
Post by: lgemini on September 25, 2012, 07:31:35 am
I do not want my son to be Robin or any Superhero just because I do not want my son (11 yrs)  to wear tights.  My son is a big boy and it will not look right.   Please let me know if I am wrong.

At 11 he should be able to decide what he wants to wear for Halloween. If he wants to wear tights and doesn't care that YOU don't think it will look right then let him. If he wants to be Robin and doesn't want to wear tights he doesn't have to. It could really work with any type of fitted pants

Kids that young generally don't care what they look like and now have started to have such body image issues because it's the adults that are constantly commenting on what looks right on their body type

I guess it depends on the costume... Most times the superhero costumes (the plastic ones with the mask) don't use tights. If however you go to a Halloween shop, they may actually use tights more as a gag. However he's too young to be showing his stuff off as a gag; those costumes are meant more for adults. Although the Halloween shops may also have child versions that again don't use tights (see picture below).

If you really are concerned, perhaps you could talk him into some other superhero that doesn't use tights... One of the Transformers characters, Iron Man, Green Hornet, the Shadow (although he's prob'ly too young to know about that one).

If it is a pre made costume I doubt it would have real tights just regular stretchy fabric. If you make it at home you can make some choices of the type of fabric you use. Ultimately he is old enough to make the choice of what to wear.

On Halloween, anything goes!  It is probably best to let him try it on and if he doesn't have a problem with it and it doesn't look vulgar, let him enjoy without shame!  Or get your own items like green jeans from the thrift store so it is more like regular clothes made into a costume.  Have fun!

Yes you're wrong and making much ado about nothing.  It's only Halloween just one dayof the year a few hours of the day.  Really you want to make a fight about this?  Let him wear the stupid tights it's part of the harmless costume.  Is he asking to wear tights all the time now?  Good grief you have issues.

Aw let him be a kid. It does not last long. But take several pics. of him. They are good to have around afterwards. I am sure you would find a reason to drag them out in later years.

Costumes can always be modified. Most outfits you buy (as someone posted above) include pants so he will not have to wear tights. I remember I was Batman one year.

I think that if your son is at ease with it than you should be to.  What are you worried about?  Would you have the same worries if your son were a gigantic Football player?  Or do you have a lack of confidence in your son?  Has he done something in the past that has you worried about his choices? Or perhaps this is a weakness that you sense in your past and you don't want it manifested through your son?  My son wore an all pink, tight nylon outfit while two of his buddies wore blue and lavendar.  I didn't get it but it was his choice and he isn't any worse for the wear.  I am about as male as one can get and I have worn pink running tights in ultra-marathons.  Hasn't really affected me.

He's only 11. He is obviously not at that stage yet where he thinks it may be "girly" or there may be something wrong with it because if that was the case then he wouldn't want to be Robin. BUT if it bugs you that much then you should start looking for maybe green pants and a red shirt he can wear.  :)

You sound like a terrible mother. You will have plenty of other opportunities to ruin him. Let this one go.

Lol, he's still 11, appreciate the fact that he doesn't care about what others think of him, and that he's comfortable with himself. In about 2 years you'll wish he was the way he is right now.

Unlike some, I can understand your concern. You want to protect your child from being made fun of by other kids. I say go ahead and let him be Robin; there are many other options besides tights. Get a costume that fits and if it has tights (probably won't, but just in case) get a cheapo pair of green sweats and black socks for the bottom part of the costume. or just jeans. He will probably only care that he can somehow show to others that he's Robin. And you can explain the jeans as being needed due to it being cold or something.

If you choose the Richard Grayson version of Robin (red/green costume, picture in previous post), and decide to do what is in bold above, forget about using socks. The black on the legs are suppose to be part of Robin's boots, and would be unnecessary to copy.
