Title: How many Ladies work on cars themselves
Post by: vp44 on October 20, 2012, 01:17:15 am
Today I actually changed the battery in my son and I car. I kept saying to myself what was I thinking, with the car we have the battery which is located under the windshield fluid tank, also there's a brace to take off on top and then another brace on side that you had to actually take off before even getting to the battery. I cut my finger and screwed up my do it yourself manicure. After 1 hour and some minutes I was finally done. Not to mention I walked about 3 blocks to auto place for battery, pushing our shopper cart you know the black cart. Glad I was able to walk in with my core part so I can get that 12.00 off. All in all I feel good that I was able to overcome a challenge being a single mother, raised by men cause I grew up with my 2 brothers and my Father so I guess the strong tomboy came out of me, lol. Yes I would have liked for the auto parts place to have changed our battery for us, but being where it was located they are forbidden to do it. All in all my son and I are now mobile again. Earning the extra cash from Fusion Cash allowed us to be able to pay for our battery along with what I already saved. Fusion Cash is a great helper and life saver for when you can earn and then they come thru with your payment. Trust within Fusion Cash I do have. Bless us all for being able to have a site like this. :angel11: :)

It is hard when you are a single mom, but you can learn to do a lot on your own. Luckly i grew up on a farm and learned how to do a lot, not that i like it. But at least i know i can. I learned to listen to my motor and other sounds of my cars and trucks and has saved me  a lot of money by getting it taken care of before it turned into a major problem.

I would love to be able to do that, however, it's my parents car that they let me drive so I think they would frown on me messing up their car.  Believe me, I love the idea of doing things yourself.  I'm working on building myself a computer despite the fact I've never done it before.  Believe me, I find it much better being able to take care of my own equipment instead of relying on another to take care of it for me.

I am a WOMEN and I work on my own car thanks to my father making me learn.  But there is a down side to knowing how to work on a car and being a WOMEN,  mechanics WON'T listen to you when you know there is something wrong with your car.  They think you don't know what you are talking about and FROWN when you prove them wrong.  Which I have done several time with my own car.  It has also been proven the WOMEN can hear somethings that a MAN can hear.    ;D

I actually love working on cars.  Was married to a mechanic and have now divorced so all the time helping him out came in handy now that I'm single

I try to do some of it myself but I am not very strong so heavy lifting is out. I used to have an old truck that I had to manually start alot. I really don't like it but it saves money some times.

I had wanted to learn back in high school, but had a very gender specific counselor who pretty much made it impossible to fir the auto sho class into my schedule. It would be great to know at least few things just in case.

I can't even change a tire. I wish I did have experience in fixing cars because I could own an older car and be able to fix it myself thereby saving money. I don't have a lot of motivation to learn though.

I can understand that. I had motivation because I kept getting tired of going to the mechanic and  he charge so much for some of the minor things. Plus I asked my brothers for advice they showed me how to do some of the minor things, like check the oil and transmission fluid. Check the levels of your fluid in your radiator, brake fluid and windshield wiper fluid. I change my own air filters but not the oil filter.I check the manual when a fuse goes out and change that also. I had a Honda at one point and I use to go to the pick a part and get some parts from off Honda's there and fix my Honda. Not major things but things I could do on my own.I was happy to see the men there that would give me a smile or a thumbs up. Made me feel more self reliant. One day you will probably say I'm gonna do it! Good Luck when that day comes.

I can check and add fluids and change a tire, change fuses that's about it.  I'd like to learn how to do more though.  It's always good to know.  I have an older car but now-a-days cars are so technical you can't even check your oil without taking it to the dealership.

VP44 You are an inspiration!  It is empowering when you can control something in your life yourself!  You go Girl!   Kudos for the example you are setting for your child too!  Hard job and most important job - being a mom.  Congrats and my hat is off to you!
The moment makes me think of the phrase "I am woman - hear me roar!!"   LOL

Thank you very much, it makes me smile when you hear good feedback. I also like that phrase.Yes a mom's job is never easy but its also rewarding when you see things in your child that shows that hard work does pay off.
