Title: Flu Shots
Post by: jtrask on October 21, 2012, 08:14:34 pm
Who has gotten their flu shots this year or plan to get a flu shot soon - I am going to get one - they will be giving the shots close to where I live in early November so think I will go there.  :angel12:

I have never had a flu shot and am not planning to get one either. I wonder if the flu virus in the US is the same as the one in South Africa - if so, then I will be safe (she says, crossing her fingers)!

There is a new flu shot this year that has short needles to give the shot - guessing it will hurt less.  :female:

I don't plan to get a flu shot this year and I most likely won't have the extra money for it anyways. So, I'm not gonna worry about it.

We have never received any, nor will we ever.  I don't believe in vaccines of any kind.  Because the immune system can be strengthened naturally with nutrition, plenty of clean water, the Essential 90 nutrients (look up Dr Joel Wallach of Dead Doctors Don't Lie fame).   I take 5,000 IU Vitamin D3 daily to help prevent the flu too.

Considering all the bad ingredients in the flu vaccines (and other vaccines), the KNOWN and REPORTED Adverse Reactions, I'd rather take a chance and get the flu naturally and then become immune to that strain the way nature intended to give us permanent immunity.

I would like a free Flu shot, because I do not have health insurance.   I think the Flu shots should be free to all.  Last year one hospital had a health fair and gave out free Flu shots, but they are not having a health fair this year.

I've never gotten a flu shot and i've never gotten the flu. Some people say that by getting the flu shot, they caught the flu. I've heard some say that when they got teh flu shot they got sick from it. Not the flu but nausea and headaches. I've always been skeptical about it so i just don't get it.

I got yh flu in 2006 and again in 2007.....not fun! Since 2008 I have gotten flu shots and no more flu! When I got the flu, I was working as a Deputy in the county jail. I have since retired, but I still dont want to take any chances. By the way, when I worked in the jail, I also got chicken pox! Yhat disease is way more rough on the adult body. I was ordered off work for a month so I wouldn't give it to my fellow deputies.

I have been getting the flu shot for several years.  About three years ago, I didn't get one.  I was sick for two months.  I am a senior citizen, so I do believe seniors should get a flu shot.

I think it is so cool that some work places offer free flu shots.  I'm currently just a temp at my job, so they are talking about giving us a discount.  I'm totally down for it.  Not only can it help prevent the flu, but they also help with fever blisters--and the winter kills my lips, dries them out.

I have never gotten a flu shot and I have only had the flu once in my life. Even then it was pretty mild, so I am not that worried about. I will just make sure I take in plenty of calcium and Vitamin D as well wash and sanitize my hands often and staying away from people who are sick. Although, CVS is advertising a 20% of shopping pass if you get a flu shot. If I shopped at CVS, I would do it.

I didn't feel like getting it again, but I did the next year and it went well. I should be getting another one if I remember to ask my doctor. I forget everytime.  :BangHead:

About 30 years ago the place I worked had the health department in to give us flu shots.  Never had one till then.  I stayed sick with cold and congestion all winter until then.  After I started taking the flu shots every year I have not been sick except one cold during winter.  I have never had any trouble taking the shots but all I can say is they helped me.  Hope everyone has a wonderful day and may God bless each of you and keep you safe.

i have heard that you can still get the flu if you have had the flu shot, but i don't know anyone that this has ever happened to. everyone in my family gets one every year, even my 18 mo old. i am a big believer in immunizations and virus/cold prevention. maybe it is because i am a health major, but why get sick if you don't have to. who can really afford to get sick, anyway

I have gotten a flu shot every year for the last four years and will continue to do so.  The advantages far out  way any risks and the people who say they got sick were probably coming down with something at the time of the vaccination.  And remember the flu shot is not about curing the common cold, which a lot of the time people mistake for the flu. :peace:

Me myself have never had a Flu shot. My Father when he was alive did get a Flu shot at one point, it made him sick. My son one year I took him to get a Flu shot and he was sick after also. We do not get Flu shots. My respect to all, from my learning anytime you get something put into your body to keep you from having that problem in your body is just really a experiment on who actually gets it and does not get. To me it is just a free GOV. thing to test on people without acknowledging first hand that this is what they are doing. Notice you have to sign papers for this and then not hold this (entity) responsible for what may or may not happen. Just like this certain bird flu shot when my son was 6 and I did it because of the scare of it. Basically my brother told me after once I was just curious like the Flu Vac, that another form of people making choices to do it without holding the GOV responsible for if and when it happens. Plus they keep a record of you and if contract this illness they will know that the vaccination may have worked with some but not others. Do your testing the right way. Stop making Americans your guinea pig then not hold yourself responsible if they die from it.

Your probably that 1%  that Romney keep talking about. LOL I just had to say that. No disrespect at all I just couldn't hold that one in. Meaning your apart of the group that may not have side effects to the shot, or they maybe hidden and will show at another time, like that 15th shot or something who knows.

I got a bad case of the flu @10 yrs ago. I  was so sick and do not care to repeat it so I get my flu shot every year.

Occasionally I feel "coldish" for a day or 2 afterwards but that is the exception, not the rule. All in all it is not as bad as the full blown flu.

Never will get a flu shot. A number of years ago, I got one and was sick with the flu for a week.
Then, years later, I found Doug Kaufman on TV. He confirmed for me why it was that I got the flu.
It is very nice to have someone trustworthy explain things to you. There are natural ways to build up your immune system!

Lately I have been hearing that these shots actually increase the incidence of getting the flu so I don't think I will get one. I will let nature take its course as long as I am able bodied enough to handle it.

Nope, I have not gotten my flu shot, and will not be getting one. A few years back, my youngest daughter got the flu shot, and shortly thereafter, she got the worst flu that she had ever suffered. I am scared of those things. My family and I will just eat healthy, drink water, take our vitamins, etc.  ;)

I have not gotten one, and don't plan to for quite some time.  I've only gotten the flu maybe twice when I was a kid - and even then, they were mild, relatively speaking.  I'm still young and have a very strong immune system, so I'd rather fight the flu on my own IF I get it.

Often there are various viruses and bacteria driven diseases that fly around each winter, and as others are dropping out of work for weeks, I wasn't touched.

If my immune reaction slows down in the future, I'll reconsider, but for now, better to save the shots for those who really need it.

FYI - part of the reason one gets symptoms when receiving the flu shot is you do receive some strains of the virus in the shot.  The reaction is your body identifying and learning to fight the virus, but with a controlled amount of the virus.  The virus itself is considered "dead", but your body still recognizes it as a foreign item to be contained - hence the instinctive reaction to fight the infection.

The reason it may be ineffective some years is that the flu virus is highly volatile - hundreds of new strains appear each year as it constantly mutates.  Scientists try to guess at which of the hundreds will emerge as the primary strains that year and develop the vaccine for those viruses.  If they guess correctly, you have a greater chance of the vaccine providing you additional protection, if they guess incorrectly, the vaccine may be relatively useless that year.

Allright People!! I finally get a chance to talk about this since this is an anonymous board. I am a healthcare professional. Unemployed because I won't let the hospital administrators or insurance companies put me in a position were I might hurt a patient with their absurd demands to treat patients like we are herding cattle. They call me inefficient and I call me cautious and an extreme perfectionist. I do not believe in the flu shot for everyone. Sorry CDC. I do, however, believe in vaccines like tetanus, diphteria, and pertussis, varicella zoster, Mumps, Measles, Rubella...etc. I especially believe in the pneumococcal vaccine for folks over the age of 65. Let me explain how the flu shot is manufactured. It is a guess. They guess which strains are going to be circulating in a particular flu season (From about August-March), and they prepare the vaccine according to a GUESS. The CDC has their little disclaimer that the virus is inactived in the injection form and yada yada so it can't make you sick, but I have had my own patients develop symptoms within 24-48 hours of being injected. Now, it is entirely possible that in August they picked up a cold from somewhere and coincidentally are now sick after getting the flu shot. I saw many of these so called coincidences. Also, the symptoms are generally mild but people consider the flu any kind of congestion or general "icky" feeling. The real flu is high temperatures, chills, nausea, possibly vomiting, diarrhea, and congestion, and it can lead to the person being more susceptible to other organisms. Patients do die from the flu. Getting a normal reaction of a "minor cold" is not what concerns me. What concerns me is Guillain Barre: a devastating neurological disease. All vaccines carry a small risk for this, but the flu vaccine is more strongly associated with this GB syndrome than other vaccines. Why take that risk for a GUESS? Now, when is it appropriate to take that risk:

1. If you have asthma or COPD. You will be in trouble if you get the flu when battling these diseases
2. You are HIV positive or have cancer
3. You are pregnant
4. You are very old or very young
5. People who are morbidly obese
6. You have any condition that if you were to get the flu, you most likely will die.

Healthy humans from 6 years to 64 years should not be taking an unnecessary risk with a vaccine made through guesswork. Instead, as soon as you have the symptoms of the flu, go get seen by a physician so you can get Tamiflu.

I have had my flu shot already. Hubby gets his this week. He is a sub. teacher at mid and high school. Has already come home with a bad cold. So it is better to safe then sorry. He catches things so easiely. And since has prostate cancer and is on a wait and see list, he has too get the shots. So far his cancer has not progressed. Thank God.

I've only ever had one flu shot in my life. I actually lived in England until 1 months ago and it's not such a big deal over there, it's more something for the elderly and those working in close contact with vulnerable people like nurses etc. The ad's on TV here in the US almost promote hysteria about the flu, or pretty much anything medical, it's a bit of a culture shock in that respect. I try to keep the drugs and things I take to a minimum if possible.

I can't stand flu shots. Getting the shot isn't the problem, its waking up the next morning feeling like you got hit by a bus the day before. The lady warned me that i might be a little achy the next day, but it was a whole lot more than just a little achy. My neck, my wrist, my ankles, my back, it was just all bad.

It must suck to live your life as a conspiracy theorist and in so much fear. We owe millions of lives to vaccines, and when people stop getting them, we see a resurgence in illnesses that should NOT be a problem in modern society.

I got a flu shot toward the end of September.  My job gave it to us for free.  My body resistance was low and I took sick with flu like symtoms:  chills, sore skin, sore throat, coughing, and sneezing.  However, I took some over the counter medicine, alka-selzter plus, for about a week.  I recovered.  When I was around other people on my job with the flu, five other people, I did not get the flu again.  I was glad that I received my flu shot.

I've never had one of those. With all this funny wheather lately, I think i should go get one.

I believe the formula has been changed, but when I got a flu shot in 1968 when I worked at a hospital, I broke out in terrible hives. The flu shots back then were made of chicken embryos, and I'm allergic to feathers! Not allergic to eggs though. Hmmm.

I have only gotten a flu shot once and I am not sure it did much good.  There have been years where I didn't get the shot and I didn't get the flu either.

I thought about getting the shot, but my sister got the shot and who ever did it didn't know how to use a needle. My sister had to go the the ER because she had an infection and got antibiotics.

I have never had a flu shot and am not planning to get one either. I wonder if the flu virus in the US is the same as the one in South Africa - if so, then I will be safe (she says, crossing her fingers)!

I have also heard of flu shots and vaccines having adverse and that it is better not to take them as well. I myself have no interest in flu shots or vaccines and haven't gotten any since I was in my teens.

It's been a while since I have gotten a cold, flu or anything so I am thankful for that. I really don't believe the vaccines protect people like is claimed and indeed can do more harm than good. Besides even if they did protect people, I don't have the money to spend on them anyway.

Eh, I finally got mine. My insurance covered it, otherwise I probably wouldn't have.

My first thought when seeing that flyer was, "Lol, already have ADHD. Not worried." I mean, obviously I don't want any of the other problems, but it's already been done, and I think I feel more comfortable getting the shot anyway.

I am a very skeptical questioner of society and the rulers of it... but I still get vaccinated.  ;D

I got one each year when I leave my family and go homeless, bc it is free. But, I felt no good, and make worse. My mom saves alot of flu relief, so I will be fine this year, not sure in next year, or next or next again, so far I will be fine. ;D
