When you pay for groceries with cash, it is taxed and can be costly.  Food stamps are exempt from taxes.  There is another way to get your groceries cheaper.  Use coupons. ;D ;)

I don't think it makes much difference if your getting free food. How you pay for it makes the difference only if you have to work for it. But food stamps actually ensure that you buy only food and not some other unnecessary junk with your food stamps. It makes sense in a way that food is a necessity and anything else we can go without and survive. Therefore, you will buy only food with your food stamps, and for other things well you just gone have to work for it. I support this idea. :notworthy:

I do not mind that lower income people are given food stamps. Because that money must eventually be spent on food. At least that money is put back into the economy and not wasted on tobacco which is about 75% tax.

The quality of the food is going down because of all the crap they pump our animals with (like antibiotics).  If you want better quality (WAY better quality) go organic.  You'll pay SLIGHTLY more but, the product is beyond compare!

I would love to have food stamps, but since I work and make too much money, I don't qualify.

Keep busting your tail and work those longer hours as there are millions on welfare depending on you. ::)  I understand food stamps to a certain degree, but unless you have a mental illness or a physical handicap you should not be entitled for life.  Welfare and food stamps without drug testing and time limits encourages poor decisions, apathy, and laziness.

most people who ended up on food stamp are not lazy.  Economy, last of spouse, and job put them in that category

On the topic of not paying tax on the food if you use food stamps that is because the foods you are allowed to perchase are food products not premade meals.  That is the difference in the tax.  So it doesnt matter if you pay with food stamps or cash.

I think food stamps are for people that are handicap that can not work or for families with extremely low income.  I think the people that scam the system should be reported.

I know people that gives cash for food stamps. But I prefer cash. There is also other government programs to assist with food. In Georgia, we have WIC. You might not be able to purchase the food you can with food stamps, but it is a good supplementary if you make to much money to get approved for food stamps.

I believe that food stamps should be a safety net not a long term way of life. I am all for helping someone when they are down but you have to be willing to work hard to pull yourself up.

I tried to get food stamps but they turned us down because i'm self employed, they said that I should try to get a regular job that offers more benefits that would help my family. First time in my 41 years that I asked for help and got turned down.

In the state where I live actual food is not taxed, only soft drinks which have no nutritional value anyway.  I don't qualify for food stamps so I have to pay cash.  If you do some planning before you go to the store and are willing to try new brands, you can get your grocery bill lowered by buying sale items and using coupons.  Now that I can load coupons directly onto my store loyalty card, I no longer use up printer ink and paper printing them so the savings are greater.

There is a new store in my home town that has not been in buisness a year yet. But check this out. The price that you see on the shelf is not the final price. If an item cost $1.95 on the shelf then when you get to the check out line they add taxes to it plus an additoanl 10%.So you may end up paying almost 2.30 or 2.40 for an item that only cost 1.95 when really taxes would only make it be 2.05 and the bad part about it is they treat the foodstamps like regular money and everybody already knows that you do not tax foodstamps not long adding another 10% They say that they have over head got to make a profit some kind of way. I say I did not ask for this store so why make me pay for your bills.

Glad to live in a state without sales tax. It doesn't make a difference whether you have food stamps or cash it will still cost the same. I'm glad that food stamps are there for those who need it and that there are some regulations to make sure the money is spent on food items rather than just anything. I use cash for my trips to the store.

WOULDNT WE ALL LOVE TO RECEIVE FOOD STAMPS?  :- I CANT STAND THE FACT THAT THERE ARE SO MANY INDIVIDUALS THAT ABUSE THE GOVERNMENT SYSTEM. YOU HAVE FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN BUT INSTEAD OF THEM USING THE STAMPS TO PURCHASE FOOD FOR THEIR HOUSE HOLD, THEY SELL THEIR STAMPS FOR WHAT EVER ODD REASONS. PEOPLE LIKE THIS MAKES IT SO HARD FOR THE INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE REALLY STRUGGLING AND NEED THE HELP

Sounds like it might be a value added tax?

Food stamps do help alot of people, but the system does discourage people from trying to get off of them.

The system does not encourage people to stay on them.  My friend was on them for a while after her husband was killed in an accident leaving her with 4 young children.  It takes a lot of time to keep all the paper work up to date, you have to bring the children in to be seen and weighed.  When you shop everything has to be divided into groups for each check you get.  A check for milk, a check for milk and cereal.  A check for peanutbutter and eggs.  They are also switching over to debit cards, but that is pretty confusing too.     Just thank god if you DON'T have to use food stamps or WIC.

both food stamps and cash and ill list the differences between the two. Foodstamps because they help out alot and cash may become too high for food but for people like me shows our kids that we do not need to depend on the welfare system and that we are actually doing something with ourselves.

Someone said that if you buy your food with foodstamps it is not taxed. I believe that is wrong, you still pay taxes on the food just like always. Yes there are some people who need food stamps but I think you should be able to pass a drug test in order to get them and they should have a certain allotment per week instead of monthly.

I was talking about the adult who would be in charge of buying food for the children. They should be able to pass a drug test.
