Title: BRING BACK THE OLD CARTOONS!
Post by: Phatkitty on May 20, 2009, 07:44:52 pm
I remember when I used to look forward to Saturday Morning cartoon line-up :binkybaby: yep, I learned the constitution from History Rock....that song
"We the people in order to form a more perfect union..."
stuck in my head still today (lol) and Multiplication Rock...
"Figure 8, is 2x4, figure 4 is half of 8...",
those songs taught you something you never forgot.  Now we got.."Here come the Power Rangers, Here come the Power Rangers"....bring back the old stuff...some of it still works (lol)

Before TV had some great toons, and lots of them. But now TV sucks, you can't find anything good to watch. I browse through the channels, shake my head, and just switch the TV off.  :angry7:

I watch what my son wants to watch just to see if it is fit for him or not. Most of them of course aren't. I wish he could watch the ones I grew up with. I have got him into Scooby Doo and Buggs Bunny and a few great ones that they show on the Boomerang channel but they still don't show a lot of the ones that was around when i grew up and loved. BRING BACK THE GOOD CARTOONS!!!!  :BangHead:  :notworthy:

I loved when they came out with boomerang with a lot of older cartoons on it. But that channel even stopped showing some of them. Like my all time favorite bugs bunny. I love flinstones, jetsons, smurfs, tom and jerry and scooby doo. They still show those on boomerang, but for how long. The only cartoon I like today is Spongebob.

My little sister is 13 and she has no memory of the Loony Toons.  When I tried to tell her that Loonatics Unleashed was using the characters from an older and much better cartoon she just called me a liar.  It really is a shame, most the cartoons today don't even make sense and the remakes of classics, such as the new adventures of tom and jerry just fall flat.

Does anyone know if there's a website where you can watch the old classics?  I know hulu hosts some shows like Rocky & Bullwinkle, Felix the Cat, and Fat Albert, but I'd like to find others like the Jetsons and Underdog.

I'm pretty sure Sailor Moon isn't an 'old' cartoon...especially not here in the states. But what about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Or The Real Ghostbusters? The Jetsons, the Flintstones, the original Duck Tales or Darkwing Duck! And if you wanted to learn something, well, they aren't cartoons, but I loved Mister Roger's Neighborhood. And Sesame Street is still going strong!

I feel the same way about Saturday mornings.  My wife and I were just talking about this last night.  We both loved the Ghostbusters cartoon that used to be on Saturday mornings.  The upside is that some of these cartoons are becoming movies now.  (ie Transformers, GI Joe).

I wonder if they put any of those old tunes on DVD.

Even if they wont bring back the old cartoon (which I'm sure they wouldn't, unfortunately) I wish the new ones would be more savvy with cultural references toward movies, music, books, etc.

I remember watching Looney Toons, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Pinky and The Brain, Ren and Stimpy, Pete and Pete, yada yada blah blah and even though they were made for children they had so many elements to them that older audiences could enjoy with references to Humphry Boggart, Peter Lorre, Tim Burton, Stephen Spielberg, classical music, the storys like Robin Hood, classic movie quotes, impressions of famous people in history, etc.. I was too young to understand that any of this stuff was referencing such things at the time but the knowledge of the music, quotes, famous people, and all of that did gain a spot in my head. So later on when I hear a classical song that I recognized I would enjoy it more, when I saw M I knew the guy in it was oddly familiar too me so I kept watching and learned who Peter Lorre was... I know these are horrid examples of what I'm trying to convey here, but it's early and I've yet to get any sleep. It's just that I believe that not only were these cartoons so great and entertaining, but they were also good roots into growing to become a more culturally rounded individual as well.

This sort of intelligent way of making cartoons seemed to begin with Looney Toons and end at around the same time as KABLAM went off Nickelodeon. Now the closest thing around is the much less supirior Sponge Bob Square Pants, that at least brought the music of Tiny Tim to some peoples attention.

Family Guy and the Simpsons are the best examples of this now'a'days and I'm a bit liberal aboud censoring so I'd be all for having kids watch them (hell I grew up with The Simpsons) but I can understand how some parents would not want their kids watching that stuff, so there's not much of a chance for them taking over where Looney Toons and gang left off.

It would also be nice if Nick at Night still showed REAL classic TV like they use to. Like *bleep* Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, Taxi, I Love Lucy, Bewitched, and all those greats that made TV into what it was today. I wasn't even born before most of those shows were around so I couldn't be anymore greatful for Nick at Night showing them back then... if I grew up with the stuff on there now I'd have no idea about the roots of television. It makes me really sad that no one will get to see them now. They would definitely still enjoy them. I was watching them in middle school in the late 90's and loved them, so I know it wouldn't NOT be relivant to kids today just because they're older shows.

... Oh! One more thing (I promise lol) I'd like if the older E True Hollywood Storys would come back as well, the ones of The Little Rascals, River Pheonix, Fatty Arbuckle, and stuff. Not only are they more interesting than the rediculous Kardashian crap and the Hogans and stuff they keep showing constantly but just like the cartoons and Nick at Night they're a good learning experience and something I've always given a lot of credit to making myself more of a culturally rounded person.

I'm only 22, so it's not like I'm an old man just talking bad about the youngsters... I just wish the networks would smartin up before the world becomes COMPLETELY full of culturally deprived philistines.

RANT OVER.... the end (sorry this was so long lol)

I couldn't agree more! When I was in elementary school I'd stay up all night during the summer watching Nick at Night and Vault Disney.  My favorites were I Dream of Jeanie, Bewitched, The Addams Family, The Original Mickey Mouse Club, and the original Wonderful World of Disney (I really liked Donald in Mathmagic Land).  Then they went and moved all the classics to TV Land and Boomerang and Disney got on the kick of remaking everything.  Maybe if these shows were still on basic cable I'd start watching TV again.

By the way, I'm also a youngin' just 20 and I can appreciate the oldies.

My favorite old cartoons were not on the poll.  I want them to bring back old cartoons like The Smurfs, He-Man, Woody Woodpecker, Foghorn Leghorn (the rooster from Bugs Bunny), and especially Tasmania (with TAZ ).  These cartoons they are showing on TV now are just too confusing!  My kids stay glued to the TV and I sit there with them completely lost as to what is going on.  Are any other parents having trouble understanding why the kids are so fascinated with these cartoons now? The old cartoons are just plain funny and simple to understand.  A pie in the face, or an anvil on the head needs no explanation.  ;D

Oh, the Smurfs! How could I have forgotten those little blue guys? (Even if I never did figure out why there was only Smurfette and Sassette for girls...  :-) And I used to watch Woody Woodpecker before school when I was in 3rd or 4th grade!

nevets_sdoow also brought up some goldie oldies with the Nick at Nite reruns; they were adult shows, but I'd be much less wary of kids watching them than I would South Park!

TV Land is another little Peeve of mine. They seemed to have lightened up on the classics too (even jumping on the realitiy show wagon). Mostly when I do see real classics there anymore they only stick with a few certain shows (Sanford and Son seems to be a biggie with them) and show them in marathons or one right after another then repeat the same episodes later on in the day. Seems like such a waste to have a vault of so many classics and do that. I wont even watch anymore, it doesn't seem worth it. I'd love if more young people were exposed to these classic shows though. I'm sure they'd dig them just as much as we did growing up.

I used to watch Loony Tunes and the Smurfs. It was like 3 hours long on Saturday mornings. When my son was about 5 I got him the collectors editions of Looney Tunes. It had hundreds of the cartoons, he loved them, and I enjoyed watching them with him..
Now unfortunately it's all Naruto, Dragonball, Avatar ,etc. I can't watch them. For one thing they are kind of serious. They are always fighting to the death to " defend their dead brother's honor" etc. What happened to just dropping an anvil on them? :)

The smurfs were an all male species. Smurfette was created by Gargamel. She had short black hair in the beginning, but got the long blond hair after Papa Smurf did a spell to turn her into a real smurf.

Sassette was created by the three younger boys because Smurfette was lonely. After learning from Brainy that Smurfette was created by Gargamel, they went to his home and stole half a page of the smurfette creating formula. Then mixed the potions inside Papa Smurf's house when he was away.

I'm from the old school so don't recognize most of the cartoons named in the poll.

I loved Foghorn Leghorn , Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, Snagglepuss, Road Runner and Wiley Coyote.

Our kids liked Scooby Doo, Smurfs, Pinky and the Brain, Animaniacs.

I don't watch much tv now so am out of the loop for current cartoons.

I grew up in the 90's watching classic Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network (who at the time used to show the even older stuff from the 60's and 70's as well because there was no Boomerang). As I've gotten older I've moved further and further away from American Cartoons in exchange for foreign stuff (anime anyone?) and it's only because American cartoons really, really suck nowadays and are demoralizing. If they were still like they were back in the good ol' days when I was a child then I would still watch American animation. There's only one American cartoon I currently enjoy and it's because it reminds me of the stuff I grew up with, that show is "Phineas & Ferb" on Disney. I also like to watch re-runs of any Butch Hartman show (Danny Phantom & Fairly Odd parents) because that stuff was also done really well.

Anyone here recall the goodies of the 90's like Darkwing Duck, Swat Cats, Animaniacs, Doug, Bonkers, Hey Arnold!, Kablam!, Mike, Lu & Og, The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Lab, Pepper Ann, Johnny Quest, Rocket Power, Pinky and the Brain, Rugrats, Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?, The Wildthornberries, Tale Spin, and of course Captain Planet cause he's our hero! ^_^

I heard a radio talk show host say this the other day. Said he was in Sam's Club and picked up a CD of the Old Cartoons and there was BIG WARNING LABEL on it that said it was NOT SUITABLE FOR KIDS due to the violent content. ADULTS ONLY!!!

How crazy this old world is now days.Right is wrong and wrong is right.
