Title: Parents, do you teach your kids to dislike people because you don't like them?
Post by: bjohnson52 on July 01, 2013, 11:41:01 am
While I'm asking this question, what comes to mind is the
Ten Commandments movie when Moses once again visited Pharoh
and Pharaoh's child walked up to Moses and kicked him and what was the reason
for this, because the boy knew his father didn't like Moses and acted on his own or
Pharoh put negative thoughts in the boy's' head about Moses.

I try to teach my child to like everyone, not from my likes, but want therm to make their own decisions... isn't that what being a parent is about???

What would cause a parent to teach their child to hate others?  I think and believe that if they are miserable and doesn't get along with others therefore having a partner to share that misery.  You don't teach that to your vunerable child.  Give them a chance to get to know people.

Well to answer the question, my children are grown now so they make up their own minds about who they do or do not like but when they were young no I did not try to influence them about liking or not liking someone based soley on my thoughts but if I thought someone was bad for them in some way I would talk to them and explain what I based my feelings upon.

I taught my children to respect everyone! They don't have to like them, but they are to respect them. I might dislike someone, but I never influence my daughters to dislike the ones I dislike. It is all up to them who they like or not.  :)

Absolutely not, that's so petty.  I would hope people aren't actually doing this. I try not to dislike anyone myself so I definitely don't want my kids disliking anyone even if I unfortunately do. Love is the way

I have always tried to teach my daughter to treat everyone the same way she would want to be treated.  She has been taught to show respect and to use manners.  I have tried to instill values in her that allows her to use her own judgment on issues than to use my preferences.  I can proudly say that I feel like I did a great job in raising her with good moral and ethical values.

My daughter is an adult now, but I explained to her when she was a child that, because I don't like a person, for whatever reason, that she is to treat that person with respect.  She didn't like certain children when she was growing up, although I had a good relationship with the child's mother. Yet children should be raised to stay in a child's place and be respectful.  My grandson did not like my late brother in-law because he was hard on children.  Before he died, however, he had gotten used to my grandson and would talk to him.  No, I don't believe that a child should dislike a person because you don't like them.  Yet, pay attention to your child; if he or she doesn't like a person, it may be for a good reason.

My children are still young. My oldest is 7 and we have always taught her to treat everyone like she would want to be treated herself. So far she has been nice to anyone she meets and unfortunately there are just some not so nice people out there. I want her to grow up forming her own opinions about the people she meets.

No I try to teach my children to give everyone a chance at being loved, then they can make their own opinions of them.

I want my children to form their own opinion about a person. It wouldn't be fair to impose my opinions or feelings on them.

I guess you could say I come from Old school, and no neither myself or my wife taught our children to not like someone. Like the previous poster said, we tried to direct them if they were hanging out with someone that was trouble but, never taught them to hate. Actually we would have what we called "adult time", where we would discuss things as adults and did not even raise it around the kids, normally after the kids were in bed. And by the way, Up until they were about 12 years old they were in their room for bed - weather they went to sleep was another story - at 8 pm, then after they were over 12 it was 9pm.

I try to teach my son to love thy neighbor and befriend all. When some kids do silly things I tell my son to move on and do not worry about it. If I do not like someone it is my thing not my child so no need to involve him in something like that.
