Title: Driving with Pets
Post by: tashamjoy on August 11, 2013, 11:17:14 pm
I do not think this should be allowed!!! I have seen so many people driving around with pets in the car and think this is just ridiculous. I mean I do understand sometimes you need to take your dog to vet or you love your dogs and stuff but its just a safety concern. Driving with a dog or cat in the car and on your lap and then the go to put there head out the window and then you cannot turn the wheel and crash. I think if you want to bring your animal put them in a way that they cannot climb all over your lap. I just think that its crazy that someone thinks it ok to drive with a dog on there lap. What are your guys opinions?

I have 5 dogs, 2 under 10 pounds, 1 about 25, and the other 2 are over 70.  The first 3 seldom  go in the car, really only for vet. appointments or grooming.  When they go, they either sit on the back seat or front eat - NEVER on my lap.  The big boys go to the vet but also go to doggie day care once or twice  week so they can run with other dogs.  When they travel, they sit in the back seat, no windows are opened.  I know what you mean, I'm scared when I see a dog with his head or half his body out of a car, I'm always afraid he will fall out.

I've been noticing this a lot more lately. And they're not always lap dogs on the drivers laps-which is really scary to think someone is driving around with an 80 lb animal obstructing their driving. You should drive when you drive, not multi-task; texting, eating, handling an animal.

I agree this just does not seem safe I mean I understand people are animal lovers and love them like their kids but think this way does anybody put their baby on their lap?

I noticed this too. The other day my son and I saw a lady driving down the road with a cat on her lap.  I can't imagine what would have happened if the cat got scared and started clawing her.  Must be a lot calmer cat then mine.  I also noticed a trend of people bringing their small dogs in stores like it is allowed.  Can't figure that one out.  I have seen several people pushing their dogs around in carts in Home Depot and I saw a lady carrying her little dog in CVS the other day.  I am really surprised that no one stopped them.

I am a huge animal lover, but I can think of all kinds of reason why this is not a good idea, for the store, owner and pet.

No way should pets be sitting on the drivers lap, looking out the window on the drivers side. Should be a ticket!

They actually make doggie seatbelts to help keep animals secure and safe, but it's up to the owner to decide if they want to use them.

I agree with you though, it's not safe for human or pets to have them wandering around in a vehicle.

I can't believe anyone would risk their pets' lives like that.  When I travel with my parrot, he has to stay in his cage with the seat belt around the cage...seriously.

I had both dogs and cats who loved to ride.  I had a cat that loved to be in the rear window and some that shook until we stopped.  Well can not argue about the safety rules, nothing like hanging your head out of the window.  lol  :cat:  :bunny:  :dog:

Yes, I understand your safety issues and I do have a furry friend. When our furry friend goes for a ride, someone else is in the car holding her in their lap. Honestly I am more concerned with someone texting and driving than having a dog in their lap while driving.

I agree it is dangerous.  I think I heard somewhere that a car manufacturer is making seat belts for your pet.  That sounds like a good idea to me.

I have a 67 pound black lab and she loves to ride in the car but yeah usually she does ride in the back. If it is just she and I she may ride in the front passanger seat but not very offten. I will crack my window for her in the back about two inches just to give her some air but that is it. I also do not like seeing people drive with their dogs and sometimes even cats in their laps. It is dangerous! Now when I have the car stopped if I am at one of the school's picking up the girls Angel will clime onto me and see if she can see them.

I agree pets should not be allowed to sit on a lap while driving.  I take my dog with me in the car often, but he sits in the back where he is safe

The other one that always scared me is seeing dogs riding in the back of pickup trucks.  I know that here in the South it is really common.  A lot of guys who work outdoor jobs actually take their dogs with them to work, but it seems really dangerous.  I don't know how they know the dogs won't jump out or fall out.  And what about if they have an accident?  I think it is against the law in some states, but not here.
