Title: Why Do People Say Things Online They'd NEVER Say Facce-to-Face?
Post by: mythociate on January 28, 2014, 03:46:30 pm
It was a survey-question---something like 'are there things you say to people online that you'd never say to them face-to-face?' And I answered 'yes.'

I think it's because of the 'disconnectedness'---sitting here at my computer, I feel like I'm just 'playing a big video game, in which you are all characters (and "I'm on a Quest to Save My Girlfriend!"')

(I know you're all "real people"  ::) but some subconscious part of me "knows" you're all just 'figments of my imagination'  :silly: )

See!?! I'd NEVER tell you 'you're a figment of my imagination' to your face!  ;D
What do I imagine you would say is the reason people say things to imaginary people online that they'd NEVER say in real life?

Whether online or in person....just remember Proverbs 15.......

15  A mild* answer turns away rage,+

But a harsh* word stirs up anger.+

2   The tongue of the wise makes good use of knowledge,+

But the mouth of the stupid blurts out foolishness.

I personally will not say something online that i would never say in person.  if you cant say it to their face then it probably inst something that should be said outside of your home.

And yet you cut-out my question: "How is that any different from normal life?"

You keep answering your own questions? Wonderful pretty soon you won't have a need to ask questions that you already know answers too. See how this is working out.

And you're GIVING me the answer, but not the answer you THINK you're giving me :bootyshake:

You THINK you're giving me the answer that 'I think the whole world is this rubber-room you imagine I'm bouncing-around in.'

But I know I'm not bouncing-around in a rubber-room, just like YOU know that YOU'RE not bouncing-around in a rubber-room; so how can either one of us be sure? :silly:

People are inherently evil, of course. I think it's cowardly to say things online that hurt other people.

It is referred to as the online disinhibition effect. You can google it for more info.

On line or on the telephone it is easier for a person to express themselves without worrying about any immediate repercussions.

Right on! I agree with you 100%. People can be such cowards. They tend to say whatever they want hiding behind
the screen. I think this is due to the fact that they think they can get away with it without being dealt with. They use
their anonymity to thier advantage. This is so sad and pitiful, what a shame.  :(

I disagree. Thinking about it: people imagine things & don't think about the consequences of the imagined actions unless they have more time. That is: if we say something insulting to someone face-to-face, we know that there's no time for them to understand why they SHOULDN'T do what they're imagining would shut us up. Online, they're 'only words.'

(True, they're 'only words' OFFLINE too; but offline, words become more like 'falling dominoes' than the 'wild barks' they actually ARE :silly: )

:) I don't say things on my computer, or in my email, or to others, that I would not say face to face. It may be a computer screen, but somebody is behind it.  :) That is a lot of trouble with our society today. We need to get back to reality. Our society is degrading and faces are being replaced by computer screens. (sort of sad.)

Anonymity is a powerful force. Hiding behind a fake screen name makes us feel invincible, as well as invisible. Never mind that, on many websites, we're not as anonymous as we think—and we're not anonymous at all on Facebook. Even when we reveal our real identities, we still misbehave.

Its so much easier to say things online vs in face.  You can be anyone you want online so you never get the true person.
