Aggie...i was told a few months ago my BP was a little high and the dr put me on meds.I do not like the way i feel on them.I once read in a book of natural remedies that bananas were a good source to lower it.Have you ever tried?

I am open to suggestions too.Lets face it,not smoking, drinking, exercise and diet have to be considered too.

Try a daily clove of garlic, or try garlic pills. Walking and eating less salt also helps.

Hope my advice helps. Best of luck in lowering your blood pressure.  ;)

Years ago I remember my grandma saying that a teaspoon of mustard was good for high blood pressure. I never tried it myself.

That might depend on why it to high. If it's just stress related then reducing stress in your life may help.

Apple cidar vinegar is an old remedy, but a good diet and exercise is the most effective.

I took bp meds for about two weeks and then stopped. I really think way too many people take bp meds when they do not need to do that. Of course, a healthy diet with no packaged meals; just fresh food prepared by you, yourself, drink lots of water during the day, talk a walk at a fast pace for at least a half hour every day, if possible,  and learn how to do deep breathing.

The breathing thing is the best thing to combat stress. Take in a slow, deep breath through your nose while counting to 4, hold it for 3, then let it out to a count of 8, preferably through your mouth. Us this whenever you feel stressed. You just can't stay in a state of stress while deep breathing. While you're doing this, you can also make your shoulders relax by just letting them down. I hold stress in my shoulders all the time, and have to think about pushing them down. It's stress buildup.  :o

Don't cut out salt completely. Just don't salt your food at the table. Your food probably doesn't need it anyway. Don't eat fast food if you can help it! Keep your weight down. That causes problems all over your body. Take some good vitamins to reduce inflammation in your body. You probably won't need to take any meds if you are faithful in doing these things, or at least some of them.

my guess is to reduce the sodium and get real salt - then google to see what else is easily doable, best of searching!~

Reduce salt in your diet, drink water, avoid stressful situations, go for a walk, lose some weight.

Thanks for all the interesting info!  I was just told my blood pressure was high and I may have to go on meds!  I hate the idea of taking medication so I am trying to find ways to get it down before my next dr. appt.   ;)

Drink a lot of water(no soda, coffee, beer or anything sweet). Exercise and eat small portions of your regular meals. Don't forget to eat snacks between your regular meal time. Go to bed hungry at night and avoid fast food. If you do that, you will be able to avoid a lot of stress. If regular exercise is hard, you can always go to the swimming pool. Trust me you will feel better about yourself and the bp will also be lower without using any medications.

Sorry no I am struggling with this myself.  Am on beta blockers for irregular heartbeat and those are supposed to bring down blood pressure as well but in my case didn't so now I have had to add blood pressure meds as well - my hubby passed away last year at a young age and I am unable to eliminate stress in my life.  SO ? ! ? Good luck to  you !

definitely reduce your salt and sodium intake.check with your doctor to see how much sodium you need in your diet.you would be surprised at the sodium levels in the processed foods.also try sea salt or no salt.my husband uses no salt or sea salt which ever i have on hand..me if i dont eat enough salt my blood pressure drops too low(70/40) and i start having spells of passing out.so my dr told me to eat the regular salt or sea salt..so i keep the sea salt for me to use.it tastes just like regular salt.

Reduce the salt in your diet. There is also a DASH diet for hypertension. Stress can make one's blood pressure go up; HOWEVER, hypertension is a serious disease and is called the silent killer. It should be taken very seriously and not merely attributed to stress!!! I'm a nurse and it runs in the females in my family although we are all thin and nonsmokers and aren't abnormally stressed.

If you're overweight, just losing a few pounds can really help.  Meditation can also help you relax.

As others have mentioned, lower your sodium intake, eat garlic (or garlic supplements), and exercise more. Now most people have been mentioning about salt intake, but it is more than just salt; it is you over-all sodium intake that you should pay attention to. Since salt is the main way that we consume sodium, those suggestions aren't "wrong" or "bad". But sodium can be added to our diets in other ways as well. For example, many processed foods are preserved by using sodium benzoate, which is one of the reasons why you should try to stay away from such foods -- including some of the canned foods (try using frozen veggies instead of canned ones, for example). Canned tomato products tend to be a major source for "hidden" sodium: canned tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, tomato paste, salsa, ketchup, etc. all could contain very high sodium levels, so if you plan to use these items (esp. considering you hardly ever find frozen tomatoes) check the labels from different manufacturers as there is sometimes a great disparity among different brands.

Also as linderlizzie mentioned, try to eliminate adding salt at the table; rather, try adding the salt while you are cooking... When you add salt at the dinner table, you tend to add more than necessary. The salt doesn't have a chance to dissolve as much so it will only add its taste to a little bit of the food instead of being spread throughout the dish as would happen when adding salt while you are preparing food; another way of looking at it is that at the table, a pinch of salt is added to just one portion of food whereas during preparation of a dish, a pinch will add salt to several portions. Also, the salt will dissolve into the juices / sauces while you are cooking, which usually some portion gets left on the plate (eg people don't lick their plates, so anything remaining on the plate will have some of the excess salt). Finally try to use kosher(ing) salt or sea salt while cooking. Although these forms are still chemically identical to table salt (for the most part, although sea salt may contain trace impurities giving it a unique color and/or taste), because the crystals are larger there is less mass of the salt per volume and since most recipes measure by volume instead of mass/weight, you end up adding less sodium in the process.

Personally, I don't have high blood pressure.  However my hubby does and has been on Metroprol (s/p?) Since he was in his young 20's.  His Dr. just increased his dosage to 2 a day about a year ago.  He has anxiety issues... so it seems that and blood pressure go hand in hand.  I'm a big believer in making a lifestyle change rather go on med's too.  Exercise, eat right  - all the advice on reducing salt, fast food etc...seems to be right on.

Maybe you could try yoga, the meditation is supposed to help reduce blood pressure.

I was told a tea spoon of vinagar can help lower your blood pressure, also taking garlic everyday can help.

Yea, BP meds are pretty nasty things I've told.  I have a friend who is on 2 ... yep that's right 2.  I know there are some natural and homeopathic remedies that work for BP.  If it were me, I would do a search for a naturopathic doc and see what they had to offer.  They can be expensive tho. Come to think of it, I'd probably just search the internet and do extensive research and try a few.

Reducing stress, lower salt and exercise (as has already been mentioned are the best)  I'm fortunate that my BP is ok. I'm on other meds that I want to eliminate ... that's a whole other topic tho!!! Chuckle.

Hope you find something other than traditional meds.   :angel11:

Some sites that are good for some ideas.  I like allthehealthnetwork.  Gives some good advice on healthy living.  Foods that are good for certain things and stuff like that.  Good luck, I know it can be done.  My brother in law brought his down in a few months.
