Title: Quitting or Getting Fired?
Post by: fjaz1 on August 28, 2014, 09:19:09 pm
Which do you think is worse?  To me quitting a job is worse because you have the choice where as getting fired may not be your fault.  I recently got a temporary assignment ended from a temp agency because the company they sent me to found out I have bad vision in one eye so they said I was a safety hazard and didn't want me riding forklifts.  I have been riding forklifts all my life with no incidents and am more careful on them because I have to be since I don't have perfect eyesight.  So what is their excuse when someone with 20/20 vision has an accident because they weren't paying attention?  I will be taking that issue up with the proper agency   I don't take jobs that I don't like so I have no need to quit them, but I can't control when someone discriminates against me.  I have been rejected from jobs in the last few months because I am too short, too old, and can't see.  It doesn't matter to them that I have near perfect attendance in my life, never done drugs, a college degree, and great work ethic and various experience.  Looking for a suitable job is really tough out there for anyone :peace:

check out your contract rules & regulations policy before taking it to court. I  understand your pain, got fired too but to me I was happy to get out of a company that just was too sleazy & full of bs to bother staying. a yr or 2 later karma caught up wit the jerk bosses that fired me! They got canned cuz they were caught using monies from the company to buy a boat & when investigated, found that the bosses didn't know what the hell they were doing. Literally, it was the blind leading the blind in running the facility! I only wish I was a fly on the wall seeing justice happen to those jerks.LOL!

It's always better to leave on your terms.

I think getting fired is worse you don't get to leave on your own terms and many times escorted right out the door. When you quit sometimes they even throw you a little celebration depending on length of service.

I have been fired once in my working years. I enjoyed and liked my job, except for one customer. ( I was a waitress) The creep would not keep his hands to him self. One day he pinched my butt. Well I poured a glass of water on him and when he stood up I decked him. Oh it felt good.  He was a lawyer.  Did not bother me. His lunch mates were the District Attorney and the Asst. attorney. They stood up for me. But the wife of the owner had me fired. She was a good friend of his. But I stayed for 2 weeks as I had parties booked, then I also received 2 weeks severance pay. I had a job the next day. and proceeded to take all of the clubs with me to another restruent . Revenge was nice. So was the extra pay.

Boy what a dumb broad the wife was, you could have sued that guy for sexual harrassement and what great witnesses.  What an *bleep* he going  if he thought he was going to get away with that.   He probably had before too bad no charges were filed against him.  Wonder what that lady thought when her business dropped off so much.  Way to go.  :)

I think getting fired is worse.  I have been let go 2 times, both times they were having down sizing at the companies.  Even when you know lots of people are being let go it is still a shock.    Downsizing is often  because of poor management, and yet the poor managers still have work.

If you lose a job because you were fired, it looks terrible on your resume'.  However, I remember a job that I had years ago.  I worked at this company for over 6 years.  Middle management decided they were going to come in and basically do away with our whole department.  My friend, who was also my supervisor there, was needlessly fired.  Afterward, she was able to apply for and get unemployment compensation.  I did not get fired, even though I found out weeks later that I was supposed to be.  As a result, I had no choice but to quit.  The job that I used to enjoy became unbearable for me.  Because I quit, I was not eligible for unemployment.

In my particular case, I did not care one bit what getting fired, if that would have happened, would do for my resume'.  I made up my mind that I would never work in a corporate setting again and that I would work for myself.

That has been the case for me over the past 12 years or so.

If you plan on staying in a corporate setting, try not to get fired.  Keep yourself employed so that unemployment never has to be an issue.

It would depend.  Getting fired or layed off because of the companies fault, means you draw unemployment sooner.  If you need to quit for personal reasons that can be dealt with in a reasonable amount of time you might want to leave the door open for you to return if you need or want to.  I personally, liked lay offs.

I haven't worked for anyone else for over 50 years and since I am now retired, I doubt if I ever will.

So much for the saying "Quitters never win, Winners never quit" I use to see on my paychecks.  Wasn't really talking about getting laid off or downsizing, was talking about unfair incidents not related to attendance or work performance.  I once was told by the VP of a company that it was more important to get along with co-workers than doing your actual job :o How insane is that ????

I say in terms of having future job references if you quit you can use your old job on a future application but not if you are fired. One thing that some people do is get fired to collect unemployment.

I've never been fired from a job.  I have quit a few that were forcing me to question my moral and ethical principals.  I could have stuck the jobs out... been miserable and continued to live in justifying my need for employment.  However,  I've been blessed with opportunities that open allowing me to quit and jump into something new that fits me better.  My son was hired last year to detassel corn.  He was let go after 3 weeks.  Now he's had an IEP for vision throughout gradeschool... I could have made a stink.  I didn't.  Instead I told him the following year that if he is "let go" again I wouldn't be driving me taking him to register and catch the bus again.  He was mad at me.  He's successfully completed a year and proved to himself that he can do it.  If they ever found out he had a vision problem they may never have hired him to begin with.... they've been known not to hire people who are to short.

I guess it'll depend on the situation.  Sometimes it's better to quit before you get fired!

It's better to quit than get fired. When you apply to another job, they will ask about the last job you left and you could say you left. If you said you were fired the company that you are applying to may be hesitant about hiring you. Sadly it's who you know nowadays. It really doesn't matter about the thousands in student loans or how qualified you are...just who you  know.

We all are discriminated at one time or another - but what can we do when other people are ignorant?

In your case, bad vision discrimination is not what they call a protected class (i.e. age, race, handicap etc....). Can you wear glasses to correct the problem? Is surgery an option?

If not, you may not want to seek out this kind of work if you keep getting fired for having bad vision. Whether or not you've done this kind of work for years is kinda of irrelevant if a company feels your bad vision is a liability to the company - and it could very well be.

Focus on your other strengths and you'll find more opportunities that are open to you that you never even thought of.

Good luck!

Let someone else do the looking, you do the interviewing. There are agencies that will do that for you. You sound like a great candidate for a job. This is nonsense, exercise your rights as an American. God bless you.

They can hire whomever they want to.  And with a temp service they can get rid of you for any reason with NO explanation.  I can understand the eye sight thing. No matter how careful you are.  And it may be their insurance more than the actual company.  Proving you were discriminated against because you are too short or too old is going to be really hard.  The eye sight you don't have a leg to stand on.  Most companies cover their own butt so proving discrimination is pretty much impossible.  fact is they can hire who ever they want to hire and you cannot make them hire you.

I was fired from one job. I just put the dates I worked at the company. I made no further comments. I had a resume and an application form. I was hired after that job. "cutback in personnel" is a good line; it tells a story with very few words. I was fired from a temp job because I didn't report correctly. I had an appointment and I think I told both the temp agency and the company I had an assignment with. I was fired. I found another temp agency; there are a lot of them, especially in a big city. I found another temp job that lasted several months. I have nice memories now.

having been a victim of several downsizings over the years i have to say that being fired or let go from a company is much worse then quitting . yes the severence pay unemployment help however you still have no control over the matter.
yes i know that all things work out as they did with me. the majority of jobs i have had it my life i have enjoyed and wasn't ready to leave then when i did.
a few years after the layoffs i did choose to leave my job to start my own business it wasn't easy but it was one of the best chioces i have made. i was in control. :rainbow: :rose: :peace:

Quit before they fired you.

If you have another job that is fine.  If you quit you cannot draw unemployment.  If you are fired, thru no fault of your own, ie cut backs, you can draw unemployment.

It depends on why you are quitting or getting fired.  Some managers and/or co-workers can make life for some a living hell if you allow them to.  In cases like that if you have no self esteem you will quit.  As for being fired, you will have to be a total parasite to get fired or possibly your boss just doesn't like you for any reason.

Getting fired is always worse because it sheds a bad light on you and your performance whereas, if you quit you and you alone make that decision - so it doesn't shed a bad light on you.

I quit my last job, just ahead of getting fired, I've never been fired before, so I was worried every day the supervisor would come out of her office or call me in to hers and tell me I had another complaint. I put in my notice, and the stress was gone somewhat but I got another complaint just 2 weeks before my last day! I've been struggling to find something else, but don't miss the stress of going way out to that job.
Good luck!

I was fired from my job but eligible for re-hire they had to let me go because the doctor wouldn't release me to go back after 5 weeks from having my daughter (by c section it was a tough delivery) so they let me go but I can re apply and possibly get hired back. Quitting I believe is better because you are leaving on good terms of you give proper notice

What kind of complaints?  Seems odd you were constantly getting complaints if you were not doing something?  Then again, customers are jerks and will complain about anything.  IF I find another job I will be quitting the one I have and they can forget a 2 week notice. lol.  Not going to happen.

Firing is worse because it's not your choice. You can deeply love your job and one day have it end and that is one of the worst feelings ever.

Quitting without having a plan or going to another job, or taking issue with something you felt is unfair/unjust is bad....being fired means you at least get to collect unemployment, etc., and it doesn't always mean you were to blame....

I hear you loud and clear!  If they would only take into consideration the factors that you mentioned.  Nobody seems to take positive attitude, great work ethic, flawless attendance and a willingness to work hard to get a job done into consideration any more. I have been blessed with employers that recognize those attributes so I am rarely without work.  On the opposite side...I am surprised how many sub-par worker's keep their jobs: people that call in sick several times a month, show up late and leave early, Need to take a fifteen minute break in the morning and afternoon in addition to a lunch hour that lasts seventy minutes. I guess the squeaky wheel does get the grease.

At least when you quit, you leave on your own terms!  But, never quit a job until you have another one lined up!  You could be cutting your own throat!
