Title: aluminum drinking containers
Post by: fc135 on August 05, 2009, 08:43:27 am
I've decided to send my daughter to school with an aluminum container instead of the plastic water bottles that I normally would.  There's been alot of concern about the chemicals from the plastic bottles "leaking" into the water. Anyone know of a place that has good deals on these types of containers?

i heard about this on the stephen colbert show, and
looked up the journalist who was talking about it.
what i want to know is... do you poor your water
FROM the plastic bottles into your new containers?
that's where i'm having trouble figuring out how
to avoid the problem altogether...

i know to some, it seems so pointless to worry about.
but if you notice how water tastes after its been sitting
in the plastic bottles for a period of time, and know that
its going into your system, its pretty scary.

also, i've heard that the wax that lines the inside of
paper cups for fast food restaurants is horrible for you.
you know that real stale taste after they've been sitting?  :sad1:

here's that article on soft plastics:

has anyone heard about plastics in pantene pro-v shampoo?

It varies on the plastic container...check the # on the bottome of the bottle.  Its an indicator on the bpa.

From what I understand aluminum is good but even better is stainless steel water containers. I guess it really boils down to how much your willing to spend too.

When I took a chemistry class in college, we asked our instructor who had done lots of research on these kind of things and even had articles published on his research, and he said ALL containers leach out chemicals into the water, even aluminum ones.  The key is to not let water sit in the containers any longer than needed.  Plus, he also said that the chemicals you get from plastic containers you don't get in the same large amount from tap water that has been run for a few minutes each morning to flush out the pipes.  If you study the chemical makeup of any of these substances, plastics, aluminum, etc, you would see that they are all bad and when any of them comes in contact with water there is an effect.

You can get these aluminum containers anywhere. Seen some funky ones a Target the other day. Dom has a cool Transformer one.....But I didn't buy it for the reason you are.
The MAIN purpose of the aluminum containers are to keep the plastic bottles out of the landfill....this is why they are called eco containers.

The concerns of the chemicals is not as bad as many make it out to be. If it is was the FDA would have stepped in.

 :notworthy: to older brothers!

Everything is bad for you or the environment somehow.  Before you go buying stuff to try to spare loved ones from different contaminants, you should make sure to read articles from reputable places (ie-not the place trying to see a product!!) and make sure it's not hype.  The other thing is, in 20 years, will we be saying that we shouldn't have been drinking out of all those aluminum containers?  Look what happened with lead-it was everywhere!
