Title: The past when women didn't work
Post by: o2bnocn on June 14, 2016, 01:31:18 pm
Would you ever want the world to go back when women didn't work? Why or why not?

Women have always worked.  Whether at home or outside the home.

Ditto. My thoughts exactly.  :female:

Of course, if given a choice at this point in my life, I would prefer not to work outside the home anymore. Just can't quite afford it right now.

I am so glad that humans (at least in Western cultures) have opened up to allow women to work outside of the home. It is always good to use every available tool at your disposal when tackling a problem. If that "problem" is to increase human knowledge and productivity, then it's best to use every tool, every human mind, regardless of gender. Whether it's radiation at the hands of Marie Curie or more recently telomerases by Carol Greider, women have made an impact on the world outside of their home.

They didn't "allow" it.  Women fought for the right to work in whatever fields they chose. The womens movement wasn't just about the right to vote.

I hate working so that would be fine with me.

I'd like to have society go back to a time when there was better home life! A time when parents are home for their kids and the family has time to sit at the dinning room table together etc. It's important for women to have equal rights and to be able to have what they want in life but with both adults working, home life has suffered and that has caused more problems in society. We can learn a lot from the past!

to go back to that time would be great. but to not work in these times would be impossible.

My mom didn't work until she got older and then not much. I feel sorry for my daughter in law who has to work along with my son to pay the bills. She has a 6mn old he seems fine with babysitters. Woman went to work more in the second world war and when it was over went back home.Saw a documentary about how they wanted to keep working i don't believe that to much.

By working is a way of been independent.  My own money and I spend it any way I want.

Actually how old are you for asking such a stupid question? I'm working right now making cents but still working.

No such thing as a stupid question. That's my philosophy, because most of my questions are not too brilliant. :silly:

You ask because you want to know and understand, not to be judged on the caliber of your question.  :notworthy:

Women have always worked.  Whether at home or outside the home.

I've known plenty of women that have never worked even within their own home but that's correct in general.

I would be bored out my mind if I just stayed home all day. I have friends that are stay at home mothers and are waiting for when all their kids are in school so they can get a job again. Childcare is too expensive for both parents to work sometimes

Even when I was younger I always liked having my own money so I did odd jobs until I was 16 and could get a real job. I can't imagine an able body adult being so depended on another person for all their wants and needs

No. I would only switch back to an old idea if a new one didn't work for me. We all need to stay busy.

Did she do laundry?  Cook?  Grocery shop?  Clean house?  Look after the children?
If she did any of those things, she worked.

Work is work, whether it is paid or unpaid.

My wife didn't work while our kids were growing up, but now she works and I stay home all day. There are no rules about who works and when, it's up to the individual.

No these women had hired help so no they didn't actually do any work in or out their home. Those are perks that the wealthy have not most people don't consider

I don't know where some of the hostility came from with this question.

You can't deny that times have changed from the past. Most women work that includes pay, not just house chores. I never said that wasn't considered work. Most women can't afford to not work nowadays, especially single women.

A resounding 'Heck no!' Not all men are the same; however, many of them are deceitful when it comes to finances. As a result, I love my independence.

I had to laugh and agree with you at the same time. I know there are a lot of good men who take care of finances, but I completely understand where you are coming from. I also have seen women who have had to do without just because of a man who has been selfish. Nowadays, it's difficult to take care of yourself financially independent without working.

So, they were management?  :D

I grew up working class.  The only time my mom had outside help was once a year, when all the women in the neighborhood would go house to house to help each other with the spring cleaning.

Working for cash or working in a household may be different in societies eyes but I would love to go back to when one parent could work and make enough cash to support a household.

Women have always worked, and in the past I'd say raising kids is one of the, if not hardest jobs around. I assume you're talking about "employed" by a company or self-employed in their own business. The only advantage I see to women "not working" is more jobs will open up for men, but that is pointless. Most women want to work, so why revert back to the "old days" as you say.

No, definitively not, the world has turned to equality of the sexes, in all things...

You were very honest, a lot of women wouldn't be in today's society. While I love the idea, I also want a career. However, I won't deny that I occasionally dream about it.

I don't think I would have enjoyed living in the past when women did not work. Personally I really enjoy being able to work be independent and buy the things I need to live. It is nice to not have to rely on anyone to get by in life.

I don't really like to have to rely on anyone else either. Although, I occasionally dream of not having to work. Most days I'm happy with my career though.

I am independent by nature. I love to earn my own money and spend it how I like. As much as I sometimes wish I was the proverbial housewife, I would get bored relatively quickly. Plus, I love having a rewarding career that satisfies me personally.
