Title: Soda Tax
Post by: UGetPaid on June 23, 2016, 08:20:34 am
So I see that the city of Philadelphia has passed a new tax on pop/soda to go into effect next January, I think.  1.5 cents per ounce, so it would add 18¢ for a 12 ounce can.  How will they collect that tax from vending machines around the city? Will they just increase the price by a 25¢ quarter -- pull the tax money and then give an extra 7¢ to the vendor?

What about high school sporting events where the concessions are usually a fund raiser for the athletic department or the marching band?  They generally sell 12 or 20 ounce cups to people using fountain drink dispenser machines and the money charged for drinks is generally just intermixed with the money charged for pizza or fries or hot cocoa, etc.  -- do they now have to jack up their prices and keep track of how many cups they sell to know how much tax must be paid?

What a nightmare!

Wow that really will jack up the price of soda there won't it.  "They" are always coming up with some way to gouge the consumer I think.  Interesting to see how that is going to work out.

I am not in favor of this because I think it is the beginnings of a nanny state.  If they can try and dissuade you from soda, I know it's a small thing but where will the state stop in telling us what to do.  Just something to look out for.

I am interested in hearing from people in the Philly area about their thoughts on this law.  Anyone?

I don't care about the extra tax. Soda is not good for you, like alcohol, cigarettes, etc. So they collect higher taxes if people buy. You aren't obligated to buy soda. I buy it, I drink it, but like any other "vice," if I really want it, I will pay the price.  Not a big deal.

Another silly law passed at a time when there are BIGGER issues to worry about than soda consumption. :sad1:

Since it's a 15 minute drive to Camden, NJ they can just make one trip a month and stock up. When I go to the mall in Portland, OR there are more Washington plates in the parking lot taking the advantage of no sales tax.

I agree with this idea and with what oldbuddy said before you, but what about the situations I mentioned where that isn't an option to go out of town?  A stationary pop machine at the laundromat or pizza joint, or a Philadelphia high school sporting event concession stand...

As far as stocking up for home, I agree with buying out of town (although some might end up spending more money in gasoline than they save in untaxed beverages).

The other argument I read about this tax is that it is intended to fund schools and education as a way to "fight poverty" (supposedly by providing a better education to students). But those who will be hardest hit by this tax are going to be poverty level and low income families who will continue to buy soft drinks (and may be less likely to travel out of Philly to buy it cheaper).  Nothing like fighting poverty by attacking the impoverished!

More and more the government reminds me of some low life huckster that will do ANYTHING to shake the people down for more money. If they really cared about the health of the citizen, why is pot becoming legal? isn't smoking pot just as unhealthy as cigarettes which they put such a high price tag on them that it forced a lot of smokers to quit? Look at gambling. The government says, Oh gambling is soooo bad! But once they get their cut of the action, all of a sudden, it's okay! I hope this stupid soda tax gets voted down. :bad:

More money for them, which isn't right to the consumer. I think they should lower price's not increase them.

Too much sugar! Too many health problems: obesity, diabetes, congestive heart failure and many others. They are asking people to drink vitamin water instead and avoid junk drinks.

I agree with Squirrelgirl44. Paying a 'sin' tax on things that are bad for you will hopefully curb public demand. I have thresholds that I will pay for things. For example: I like beer but will never pay a retailer/liquor store more than a dollar for a bottle or can. I don't shop in certain areas because the tax rate is too high.Old Buddy had a good point as well. If you think out your shopping there is a way around just about everything. Head to Camden and buy soda. They have legalized things in Colorado and placed amazingly exorbitant taxes on it.  This in turn has made the non licensed purveyors very rich because the demand for non taxed items has gone through the roof. Gas prices go up and people get cars that have better mileage or take alternative modes of transportation. Cigarettes get taxed and smokers purchase cigarettes on line from China.

When you think about it, it's really not that much money....18 cents a can isn't rant much, that's $1.08 to a six pack.

I just read about this. It is crazy. I don't drink soda myself but I used too. 1.5 cents per ounce is actually a lot and adds up fast.

I live in South Jersey just over the bridge ( with a toll ) from Philly so we have been hearing a lot about it.
I do not know if this tax is going to be as effective as they expect and could  do harm to small business owners.

My bet is they will collect a lot more tolls and businessmen in South Jersey will hit the jackpot. We have a huge shopping mall just over the Interstate Bridge from Washington (no toll) and when they have a sale it causes traffic jams.

It's ridiculous the amount of taxes we, as consumers, have to pay. And then, the government is operating in a deficit. Where does all the money REALLY go?

in all likelyhood, the tax would be put on the syrup used for fountain drinks, since it its a pretty small range for the number of drinks per box of syrup.

Just another way to take money out of a persons hand, they are not worried about how much people weigh , just how much more they gouge a  a person, I  don't drink soda pop, but my husband does. But in moderation,  Next we will pay more taxes on sugar, then flour and all other baking items because of the weight problem.  This is just the first step.

No Way!  I am a smoker, but does the government have a right to punish me by taxing cigarettes higher?? They allow the cigarettes to be made...they are not illegal!!!    Now they are going to tax soda??  OK so what if they decide to tax green tea or broccoli, cauliflower or any other vegetable.  They have no right to place taxes on ANYTHING  and/or make decisions without the vote of the people!!!  WE THE PEOPLE!!  I am sick and tired of people complaining about smokers.  You have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA of what is really coming out of the tailpipe of your car.  You are lead to believe that you are breathing clean air!  Do you really think that factories that have white smoke coming out of their chimneys isn't really black smoke that it covered up with chemicals.  If you are going to complain about deadly killers look around and look in the mirror. If clean air is your problem get rid of your car. Exhaust is a deadly killer.

Only for as long as it takes to dump the idiots that pass that kind of taxation against those who elected them.

A few states are joining this to prevent diabetes and obesity.  They figure the same will happen if they raise the prices of soda like cigarettes.   People will stop buying and start drinking water.

I think the "white smoke" you speak of is actually steam/water vapor; so I think that is probably okay.

For those that like to "control" the rest of us, this tax is awesome (more money in those greedy pockets).  I'll bet dollars to donuts that this tax is trying to get people away from drinking soda.  Personally, I don't drink soda.  It's garbage.  For those who live on this stuff, it'll for sure put a dent in your pockets.  Every time I hear of these ridiculous taxes, I think of that Beatles song, "Tax Man."

"If you drive a car, I'll tax the street
If you try to sit, I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk, I'll tax your feet"

Yeah, that's what it's coming to.

I don't drink soda but my other half does.  They tax everything so it will probably happen i'm sure.  We live in Ohio,,,  it maybe already has happened I don't know.  Guess I don't pay any attention because I don't buy the stuff.

I always refer the soda tax as the sugar tax, since most of the sugary beverage and snack prices increase... I don't really mind it since I don't drink as much soda as I used too.. And I don't use the vending machine anymore since I graduated college

That is not  good for consumers, who surely will probably see the prices rise. I am not a soda drinker as I personally don't think they are healthy and only visit there but for people who live there, I am sure they will see some kind of an increase as will tourist who  visit or may be there on business trips. Not sue of the rationale, maybe to discourage drinking sodas. :-\
